DISAPPOINTMENT IS A TEACHER

DISAPPOINTMENT IS A TEACHER

I came across a short anecdote that caused me to reflect on the up-and-down nature of the human condition and what might be our best response to it.

A husband got into a bit of trouble on his wedding anniversary.  The morning before the anniversary, his wife beamed a bright smile at him and announced, “Tomorrow there will be something in the driveway for me that goes from zero to one hundred in just two seconds.”

The next morning the wife went outside and found a beautiful box in the driveway.  She opened it and discovered a pink bathroom scale.  She was not at all amused.

 Disappointments do happen.

Throughout this journey called life, all of us will experience and eventually learn to navigate disappointments.  Those smile-evaporating experiences can be encountered anywhere…virtually everywhere.

Since disappointment is an inevitable component of life, why not make up your mind to learn from it?  Instead of becoming despondent or depressed, why not petition GOD for the PRACTICAL WISDOM needed to transform life’s occasional lemons into refreshing lemonade?

It’s the encouraging Rhema of Romans 8:28 – “We know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

It’s also the heart and soul of my life-verse, which declares, “Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 1:6)

My friend, don’t keep dwelling on your present circumstances.  Surely life has taught you by now that oppositional conditions are likely only temporary.  So, prepare for tomorrow by trusting God today.  DESTINY IS CALLING.  Can you hear it?  Your flow is in your future, not in your past.

TOO GROWN?

TOO GROWN?

During my youth, the resonating voice of ‘Big Mama’ was a larger-than-life presence in African-American neighborhoods.  When any child approached the boundaries of proper decorum and behavior, Big Mama might boom powerfully, “You are getting way too big for your britches…too grown!”  We knew, immediately and instinctively, exactly what she meant and the dire consequences of any failure to comply.  The moment had arrived to settle down and start acting like the ladies-and-gentlemen-in-waiting we were expected to be.

Big Mama’s corrective diatribes remind me of a signature admonition of Jesus Christ, who is superlatively skillful in summoning us to renewed reflection, responsibility and recognition of our better angels:

 Matthew 18:2-4 (NKJV)

Then Jesus called a little child to Him, set him in the midst of them, and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and BECOME AS LITTLE CHILDREN, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”

One might query, ‘What is it about CHILDREN that caused THE MASTER to place such high value on their intrinsic nature and disposition?’  Several character traits immediately come to mind.

CHILDREN REFLECT THE INNOCENCE OF PURE WONDER.  They somehow see the world and its inhabitants in ways as alluring and awesome as any bedtime tale that ever crossed the threshold of their hearing and imagination.  How bright and beautiful are the robins, cardinals, rabbits, turtles, sunflowers and daffodils when glimpsed through the wide-eyed gaze of a young child!  May we adults never become SO GROWN that we lose our ability to observe a dazzling sunset with appreciation or stare in awe at a magnificent rainbow.

CHILDREN ARE QUICK TO RENEW AND RESTORE.  Mere minutes after the fiercest disagreement, they find it easy to embrace, accept and turn again toward love.  Grudges are a decidedly adult phenomenon, the combative fiefdom of grown-ups who have somehow learned to remember things that are better forgotten and forgiven.

CHILDREN ARE FUNDAMENTALLY HONEST.  Although they are certainly capable of enacting deception, the truest tendency of a child is to be transparent and authentic.  That is, children tend to smile when they feel happy; they frown or cry when they are feeling sad.  Typically, there are no fake-faces or façades with children.  They are who they are.

CHILDREN NEED GENUINE INTIMACY AND BONA FIDE SPIRITUALITY.  Therefore, families should be nests of security, safe havens and wombs for personal growth and development.  In such spaces, faith tends to blossom organically and spontaneously, as a divinely-seeded promise and reality.  To wit, our children stand in need of consistent nurture – to be respected, reproved and lovingly touched – by the caring hands of God and the compassionate hands of His people.

No wonder Jesus Christ held children in such high esteem!  Jesus said, “Let the children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 19:14) So today, I promise OUR FATHER that I will try my best to become AS A LITTLE CHILD.  I will pause to observe His creation, and I will reflect upon it (and upon Him) with great gratitude, genuine joy and absolute wonder.  I will strive to forgive offenders, just as I am forgiven by Him.  I will be honest, first with myself, and then with others.  I will diligently strive to sustain my spiritual connectivity with Christ and the ‘fellow-children’ who inhabit and steward this mortal plain.  If these four wisdom principles are conscientiously and systematically applied, they will position and prepare me for the Kingdom of Heaven.  Won’t you join me in this world-changing spiritual quest?

UNYIELDING HOPE

UNYIELDING HOPE

A friend once approached me and shouted, “I’M HOPPING MAD!”  He was outraged at the attitude and comments of a co-worker.  I paused to reflect for a moment, and then decided to challenge him a little.  I asked, “Why don’t you decide to REFOCUS YOUR FEELINGS about this?  Never give another person that much power and control over your day or life.  Instead of being HOPPING MAD, why don’t you make up your mind to be HOPING GLAD?  I’m talking about HOPE!”

Hearing this, he smiled faintly, and remarked, “That sounds pretty corny, brother, but I feel you on this.  I refuse to HOP through this day in anger.  Instead, I will HOPE for something better!”  At that point, a genuine smile surfaced and transformed his countenance.

A word of advice: ALWAYS CHOOSE HOPE!  Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. suggested, “We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose INFINITE HOPE.”  More importantly, GOD declared, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you…thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a FUTURE and a HOPE.” (Jeremiah 29:11) Prayerfully meditate on the following scriptures, and if needed, give yourself an attitude adjustment.

 Psalm 119:49 (NKJV)

Remember the word to Your servant, upon which You have caused me to HOPE.

 Psalm 130:5 (NKJV)

I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in His word I do HOPE.

 Hebrews 10:23 (NKJV)

Let us hold fast the confession of our HOPE without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.

 Romans 15:4 (NKJV)

For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have HOPE

My friend, it’s time for a very powerful reorientation and resolution, one that all should cherish and pursue:

“I WILL HOLD FAST TO THE HOPE IN MY COVENANT RELATIONSHIP WITH CHRIST.”

Sisters and brothers, be continually blessed and please (above all else) MAKE SURE YOU ARE READY TO MEET YOUR SOON COMING KING.  Maranatha!

BALANCE AND PERSPECTIVE

BALANCE AND PERSPECTIVE

Believers live with the peace that stems from maintaining Godly balance and perspective.  Christ admonishes us, “Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things.  Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” (Matthew 6:34)  As we make the deliberate decision to live worry-free, we are (at the same time) making the choice to live stress-free.  This does not mean that it will become impossible for negative circumstances to knock at our doors.  Rather, it informs us that we have definite choices as to how we shall respond.

It reminds me of the story of a poor farmer who lived near a forest in a remote village.  This farmer had a beautiful white horse, a most magnificent stallion.  The farmer’s thoroughbred stallion was in high demand, and many merchants offered huge amounts of money to purchase him.

His village friends became terribly excited at his good news.  “You are so blessed to own such a valuable horse!” they smiled.

The farmer calmly replied, “It is true that my horse may be a blessing.  But we cannot say how things will turn out because nobody knows exactly what will happen on tomorrow.”

The villagers did not care at all for this seemingly passive response.

One day the farmer’s horse disappeared.  The villagers banded together and searched everywhere, but could not find the missing stallion.  The villagers criticized the farmer.  “You should have sold that horse when you had the chance,” they insisted.  “It is a terrible curse that your horse has now been stolen.”

The farmer calmly replied, “It is true that my horse may be missing.  But we cannot say how things will turn out because nobody knows exactly what will happen on tomorrow.”

Of course, the villagers frowned at his response.  They could not believe that the farmer had lost such a priceless horse and seemed so nonchalant.

After a few days, to the great surprise of the villagers, the missing stallion galloped home and brought a dozen white horses from the forest with him.  The surprised villagers gathered around the farmer and said, “You are so blessed.  You loved that horse so much, and that’s why he brought these horses home with him.”

The farmer calmly replied, “It is true that my stallion brought a dozen more horses to me.  But we cannot say whether it is a blessing or not, because nobody knows exactly what will happen on tomorrow.”

By now, the villagers thought the farmer was certifiably crazy.  He was the recipient of a dozen free horses, and still he could not see that this was a tremendous blessing.

One day, the farmer’s young son was riding one of the newly arrived horses.  Suddenly, he fell from the horse, breaking both of his legs.  The villagers arrived quickly to console the farmer.  They said, “We are really sorry for you.  It is such a curse that your only son is now handicapped.”

The farmer calmly replied, “It is true that my son may be handicapped, but we cannot say whether it is a curse or a blessing because nobody knows exactly what will happen on tomorrow.”

At that point, the villagers got really angry, and shouted, “This farmer has no sense at all!”

After a few months, the king of a neighboring country attacked the farmer’s homeland, and his country seemed to be losing the battle.  In an effort to win, the king mandated that all young men join the army and fight against the enemy.  His royal summons excluded handicapped persons.

The villagers were all in terrible grief since their sons were required to join in the battle.  They thought of the possibility that they might never see them again.  So they walked to the farmer’s house and said, “You are a very blessed man.  At least you know that you son will remain alive.”

But the farmer calmly replied, “I am certainly happy my son will not fight in this war, but we cannot say whether it is a curse or a blessing because nobody knows exactly what will happen on tomorrow.”

That wise old farmer gave that same, calm, balanced reply for the rest of his life.  What can we glean from the farmer’s life-story?  That it is expedient for every believer to maintain balance and perspective, regardless of prevailing circumstances.

One truth that produces hope and tranquility is this simple fact: GOD IS ALWAYS PRESENT, significantly and substantively, in the lives of His sons and daughters. (Psalm 46:1)  Therefore, we shall never surrender to doubt or despair – for we know that, wherever we are, however we are, JEHOVAH-SHAMMAH is there!  Make up your mind, TODAY, to cast all your cares upon HIM, knowing that He cares for you. NOEL: THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE SEASON

NOEL: THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE SEASON

The French word “NOEL” is derived from the Latin root, “natalis,” which means BIRTHDAY.  When capitalized, it is synonymous with the angelic heralding of yuletide or CHRISTMAS.  This term came into popular usage when “The First Noel” was penned during the 18th century by an unknown English composer. Its joyous lyrics are perennially familiar to us.

The first Noel, the angels did say

Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay;
In fields where they lay keeping their sheep
On a cold winter's night that was so deep.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel!

Nevertheless, as we reflect upon our contemporary celebrations of Christmas, the central message of the divine incarnation and redemptive birth of Jesus Christ is noticeably absent.

Our focus seems to be mostly on the festivities: food, parties, gatherings with family and the exchanging of gifts.  The result is a time of tremendous emotional upheaval and widespread depression (even suicide) for many, especially those who lack sufficient resources to fulfill the mundane and material expectations of this festive season.  The gospel of Jesus Christ is virtually sidelined by our cultural and customary traditions.  And we believers silently ask: “How can this be?”

Another question is begged: “Is it logical (or even possible) to remove CHRIST from Christmas?”  I think not.  After all, HE IS THE ONE who voluntarily disrobed Himself of the wondrous splendors of Heaven and entered a fallen and finite world system that is dominated by insidious quests for pleasure, power, fortune and fame.  Jesus Christ, alone, is the Savior of our world.  The scriptures testify of His matchless and miraculous gift of grace to humankind:

 Psalm 40:6-8

Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required.  Then said I, LO, I COME: IN THE VOLUME OF THE BOOK IT IS WRITTEN OF ME, I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.

 Isaiah 9:6

FOR UNTO US A CHILD IS BORN, UNTO US A SON IS GIVEN: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

 Matthew 1:21

And she shall bring forth a son, and THOU SHALT CALL HIS NAME JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

 John 1:11-12

He came unto his own, and his own received him not.  But as many as received him, TO THEM GAVE HE POWER TO BECOME THE SONS OF GOD, even to them that believe on HIS NAME.

Because of the victorious life, vicarious suffering and vital atonement of JESUS CHRIST, we are free forever from the power, practice, penalty and guilt of sin.

 HALLELUJAH…WHAT A SAVIOR!

 Romans 8:1-4

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in CHRIST JESUS, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.   FOR THE LAW OF THE SPIRIT OF LIFE IN CHRIST JESUS HATH MADE ME FREE FROM THE LAW OF SIN AND DEATH.  For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

 Bottom-line: JESUS PAID IT ALL!

So, in this season (and always) we thank you, JESUS, for your timely birth, your sinless life, your substitutionary death, your victorious resurrection and your marvelous legacy of spiritual power, life and peace that has been eternally bequeathed to us.  We pledge to remember the real reason for this season and we will collectively celebrate OUR GREATEST GIFT with unbounded joy.

A HEARTWARMING CHRISTMAS STORY

A HEARTWARMING CHRISTMAS STORY

It is virtually impossible to apprehend the significance of Christmas in the absence of embracing the timeless truth that “God is love.”  His loving character and Word admonish us to “love one another…for everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.” (I John 4:7-8, NIV) In 1982, Nancy W. Gavin penned a touching story which underscores the meaning and message of Christmas, LOVE…:

It’s just a small, white envelope stuck among the branches of our Christmas tree.  No name, no identification, no inscription.  It has peeked through the branches of our tree for the past 10 years or so.

It all began because my husband, Mike, hated Christmas.  He did not dishonor the true meaning of Christmas, but he despised its commercial aspects – the overspending, the frantic running around at the last minute to get a tie for Uncle Harry or dusting powder for Grandma – often given in desperation because you just couldn’t think of anything else.

One year, knowing he felt this way, I decided to bypass the usual shirts, sweaters, ties, etc.  I reached for something special just for Mike.  The inspiration came in a most unusual way.

Our 12-year-old son, Kevin, was on the wrestling team at school.  Shortly before Christmas, there was a non-league match against a team sponsored by an inner-city church, comprised mostly of minority kids.  These youngsters were dressed in sneakers so ragged that shoestrings seemed to be the only thing holding them together, and they presented a sharp contrast to our boys in their spiffy blue and gold uniforms and their sparkling new wrestling shoes.

As the match began, I was alarmed to see that the other team was wrestling without headgear, a light helmet designed to protect a wrestler’s ears.  It was a luxury the inner-city team simply could not afford.  Well, we ended up walloping them that day; we took every weight class.  As each of their boys got up from the mat, he swaggered around in his tattered uniform with false bravado, a kind of street pride that seemed to have difficulty acknowledging defeat.

Seated beside me, Mike shook his head sadly.  “I wish just one of them could have won,” he said. “They have a lot of potential, but losing like this could take the heart right out of them.”  Mike loved kids and he knew them well – having coached little league football, baseball and lacrosse.

That’s when the idea for a unique Christmas present came.  That same afternoon, I went to the local sporting goods store and bought an assortment of wrestling headgear and shoes and sent them anonymously to the inner-city church.

On Christmas Eve, I placed an envelope on the tree, the note inside telling Mike what had been done and the fact that this was his gift from me.  His radiant smile was the brightest thing about Christmas that year, and in succeeding years.

Every Christmas thereafter, we followed this giving tradition – one year sending a group of mentally handicapped youngsters to a hockey game, another year mailing a check to a pair of elderly brothers whose home had burned to the ground right before Christmas, and so on.

The giving envelope became the highlight of our Christmas.  It was always the last thing opened on Christmas morning and our children, ignoring their new toys, would stand with wide-eyed anticipation as their Dad lifted the envelope from the tree to reveal its contents.

As the children grew, toys gave way to more practical presents, but the envelope never lost its allure.  But the story doesn’t end there.  You see, last year we lost Mike due to cancer.  When Christmas rolled around, I was still so wrapped in grief that I barely got the tree up.  But Christmas Eve found me placing an envelope on the tree, and in the morning, it was joined by three more.  Each of our children, unbeknownst to the others, had placed an envelope on the tree for their Dad.

Our family Christmas tradition has grown and someday will expand even further with grandchildren standing around the tree in wide-eyed anticipation, watching as their fathers take down the envelopes.  Mike’s spirit, like the Christmas spirit, will always be present, and will always be a special present for us.

May we all remember each other this year, and may we never forget THE REAL REASON FOR THE SEASON, THE CHRIST CHILD WHO IS SAVIOR AND LORD.  Merry Christmas!

THE PERFECT CHRISTMAS GIFT

THE PERFECT CHRISTMAS GIFT

Please stop stressing about buying the most unique or costly Christmas gifts you can imagine or discover.  Fact is, you already have them.  As you check out the following story by Joseph Rebecky, you will consciously embrace the spirit of gratitude and the wonderful fulfillment that is found in the most precious of life’s gifts.

As a young child I remember running down the steps on Christmas morning and looking around the tree for the biggest box.  I always believed that within the biggest box lay the most expensive and best gift.

But as time worked its wonders on my mind and soul, I realized that each gift was special, unique and meaningful.  In fact, the presents that I remember most are the gifts that came directly from the heart, such as one of my mother’s handmade sweaters or scarves.  Ultimately, Christmas is not about the gifts themselves, but rather the expressions of love behind the gifts.

This Christmas I have already been blessed to receive the most beautiful and amazing presents in the world, the love of the special people in and around my life.  However, I know the true meaning of Christmas is found in the word “giving.”  So, this Christmas, I pledged to search and search until I find the most incredible gifts for some phenomenal people.

I spent many days in crowded stores and scanned numerous holiday catalogs, but nothing seemed to stand out.  As Christmas approached, I wondered if I would ever find those “perfect” gifts.  I decided to try the local mall one last time.  Perhaps I had missed an amazing store or some awesome merchandize that had just hit the racks and shelves.

But as I passed from one store to the next, nothing caught my eye.  Feeling somewhat defeated, I slowly made my way toward the mall exit.  But before I could reach the doors, I suddenly found my “perfect” gift.

No, this gift was not found in a fancy and expensive department store.  It could not be wrapped in colorful Christmas paper and adorned with bright ribbons and bows.  Actually, this gift doesn’t have a receipt and it could never be returned or exchanged.

So, where did I find this “perfect” gift – and more importantly, what is it?  I found it in the eyes of an elderly couple holding hands.  I heard it in the playful words between a grandfather and grandson.  I glimpsed it in a proud new mother’s caress of her infant daughter.

Yes, my “perfect” gift is LOVE.  So this Christmas, I offer the gift of LOVE and believe with all my heart that its recipients will treasure and keep it always.

Well said, Joseph Rebecky, well said.  We shall also make a conscientious effort to truly treasure our loved ones – and all of us will be supremely grateful for our priceless and precious gift: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)  Indeed, HE is the perfect Christmas gift!  Merry Christmas!

ONE NEVER KNOWS

ONE NEVER KNOWS

If any among you are tempted to feel sad or depressed during this Christmas season due to a lack of adequate resources or due to the absence or loss of a loved one, you must read and share the following story written by an unknown author.  It will surely inspire and bless you.

A pastor and his wife were given their first assignment, to reopen a church in Brooklyn, New York.  They arrived in early October, thrilled beyond measure to be entering an exciting ministry opportunity.  However, as they entered the church, their enthusiasm faded as they found the building to be run down and in dire need of restoration and repairs.  But right then and there, they set a goal to have all the necessary work done in time to have their first worship service on Christmas Eve.

They worked diligently, repairing pews, plastering walls, painting, etc., and on December 18th they were well ahead of schedule, just about finished.  Nevertheless, on December 19th a stormy tempest hit the area and lasted for two full days.

On the 21st of December, the pastor went over to inspect the edifice.  His heart sunk immediately when he saw that the roof had leaked, causing a large area of plaster to fall off the front wall of the sanctuary, just behind the pulpit.  The pastor swept up the mess on the floor, and not knowing what else to do, he headed homeward, planning to postpone their first service.   On the way home he noticed a local business sponsoring a flea market for charity, so he decided to stop by.

One of the items on sale was a beautiful, hand-made, ivory colored, crochet table cloth. It was truly an exquisite work of art, with striking colors and an ornate cross embroidered at the center.  The new pastor thought, ‘It is just the right size to cover up the hole in the front wall of the sanctuary!’  So he bought it and quickly headed back to church.

By this time it had started to snow.  An older woman hurried from the opposite direction, trying to catch a passing bus, but she missed it.  The pastor invited her to wait inside the warm sanctuary for the next bus, which was due to arrive 45 minutes later.  The grateful woman sat in a pew and paid little attention to the pastor while he gathered a ladder and wall hangers to mount the gorgeous tablecloth as a church tapestry.  The pastor could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and how perfectly it covered the entire problem area.  Just then, he noticed the woman walking slowly down the center aisle, wearing a shocked facial expression.

“Pastor,” she inquired, “Where…where…did you get that tablecloth?”

The pastor related the story of his recent purchase.  The woman asked him to check the lower right corner to see if the initials “EBG” were present there, and they were.  These were actually the initials of that woman, who had made the tablecloth 35 years previously while living in Austria.

The woman explained that before the war she and her husband were well-to-do people in Austria.  When the Nazis arrived, her husband sent her to safety, and planned to follow the next week.  Unfortunately, she was captured, detained in a camp, and never saw her husband or her home again.

The pastor offered to give her the tablecloth, but she insisted that he keep it for the church.  He said “Then I will drive you home; that is the least I can do.”  The woman lived on the other side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn for the day doing a housecleaning job.

Christmas Eve arrived, and what a wonderful service they had!  The church was practically full, and the Holy Spirit moved upon the hearts of all who attended.  At the close of the service, the pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door and many people promised to return often.

One older man, whom the pastor recognized from the neighborhood, continued to sit in one of the pews with a blank stare on his face, and the pastor wondered why he did not leave with all the rest.  The man asked, “Where did you get the tablecloth on the front wall? It is identical to one my wife made years ago when we lived in Austria before the war.  Could there be two tablecloths so much alike?”

He told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he forced his wife to flee for safety with plans to follow her, but then he was arrested and placed in a concentration camp.  He never saw his wife or his home again for all the 35 years in between.

The pastor smiled inwardly and asked the gentleman if he would accompany him on a ride.  They drove to Staten Island, to the same building where the pastor had taken the woman three days earlier.  He helped the elderly man climb three flights of stairs to the woman’s apartment, knocked on the door and saw the greatest Christmas reunion one could ever imagine!

What a miraculous story of the matchless grace and marvelous love of our God!  None of this heartwarming story would have been possible without the terrible storm and the resultant hole in the church sanctuary!  So often, our apparent 'storms' are divine appointments that ultimately bless us and others.

In truth, ONE NEVER KNOWS what GOD has in store.  So…please…do not surrender to doubt or despair.  It is my prayer that your Christmas will be endowed with the fullness of peace and joy that is the life and legacy of OUR SAVIOR, JESUS CHRIST, THE LORD.

Sisters and brothers, be continually blessed and please (above all else) MAKE SURE YOU ARE READY TO MEET YOUR SOON COMING KING.  Maranatha!

WHO AM I? WHAT REALLY MATTERS?

WHO AM I?  WHAT REALLY MATTERS?

In order to effectively navigate the twisting and tortuous turns in the stream of human existence, it is necessary to have a sure and steadfast knowledge of our identity and purpose.  I love Pierre Teilhard de Chardin’s perspective on this issue.  He wrote, “We are not HUMAN BEINGS having a spiritual experience.  We are SPIRITUAL BEINGS having a human experience.”  The Word declares that, on the sixth day of creation, “GOD created man IN HIS OWN IMAGE.” (Genesis 1:27) We are made in the likeness of God, and it is universally understood that “GOD IS A SPIRIT.” (John 4:24)

These revelatory insights beg the question, ‘Why, then, do we humans have the tendency to overemphasize, engage and embrace NATURAL MATTERS, more so than SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCES?’

The Apostle Paul admonishes us to retain a strong spiritual focus as we experience life on this earthly plain. “If then you were raised with Christ, SEEK THOSE THINGS WHICH ARE ABOVE, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God.” (Colossians 3:1) Jesus Christ poses a most strategic question, which simultaneously serves as a sobering warning: “For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?  Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?” (Matthew 16:26)

My friend, you are MORE than your career, your residence, your wardrobe, your education, or anything you visualize or perceive with your five senses.  INDEED, YOU WERE MADE FOR MUCH HIGHER PURPOSES.  YOU WERE CREATED TO HONOR, SERVE AND WORSHIP GOD.  Therefore, it is imperative that you discover and embrace the HEAVENLY MEANING in every earthly matter.  In other words, don’t ever allow that which really counts, the substance of life, to get displaced or lost in the daily ‘sauce of life.’  Focus.  Pray.  Believe.

GOD'S PROPERTY

GOD’S PROPERTY

Difficult moments should never take believers by surprise.  Consider the sage advice of the Apostle Peter. “Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy." (I Peter 4:12-13)

My friend, you will surely survive since you walk in covenant connectivity with Christ.  The all-wise Savior has invested so much in processing and protecting your lifelong growth and development, and He will certainly see you through.  My life-verse is a reassuring reminder: “Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 1:6)

WINNER-BELIEVER, refuse to reside in fear, frustration, disappointment, doubt, grief, or sorrow.  Never allow unexpected enemy incursions to blindside, derail, or destroy you.  Do not grant the enemy access to your mind or permission to deflate your dreams.  For in the final analysis, YOU ARE GOD’S PROPERTY and possession, and unquestionably, HE HAS YOUR BACK
