PSALM 67

Psalm 67
God be merciful to us and bless us, and cause His face to shine upon us, Selah
That Your way may be known on earth, Your salvation among all nations.
Let the peoples praise You, O God; let all the peoples praise You.
Oh, let the nations be glad and sing for joy! For You shall judge the people righteously, and govern the nations on earth. Selah
Let the peoples praise You, O God; let all the peoples praise You.
Then the earth shall yield her increase; God, our own God, shall bless us.
God shall bless us, and all the ends of the earth shall fear Him.

Sisters and brothers, be continually blessed, and please (above all else) MAKE SURE YOU ARE READY TO MEET OUR SOON COMING KING.  Maranatha!

END-TIMES PROPHECY: THE IMMINENT RETURN OF CHRIST (Pt. X)

END-TIMES PROPHECY: THE IMMINENT RETURN OF CHRIST (Pt. X)

THE HOLY SPIRIT proclaims the urgent message that JESUS CHRIST will return to Earth very soon.  This is the final installment of our end-times series.  It highlights the eternal joys of Heaven and the extraordinary God-given rewards for the righteous.

Let’s begin by sharing an awesome announcement.  If you are born again, you are already a resident of Heaven by faith, for the Bible declares that we are now seated “together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” (Ephesians 2:6)  So winner-believer, don’t wait until the battle is over; you can shout now!  For you know, in the end, you’re going to win! (Romans 8:37)

Let’s take a quick peek inside Heaven, shall we?  It is the unique and blessed dwelling place of our God. (Isaiah 66:1 – Matthew 6:9)  Heaven is also the future home of all faithful disciples who will enter into everlasting union with the Church’s Bridegroom, Jesus Christ. (Revelation 19:9 – Revelation 21:9)  It is a place of indescribable beauty and superlative splendor since Heaven’s designing architect is God. (Hebrews 11:10)  Indeed, it is the “Father’s house,” comprised of a capital city called “New Jerusalem,” the throne room of God, a multitude of incredible mansions and unlimited ‘creative surprises’ for the saints.  According to God’s Word, “Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for them that love him.” (John 14:2-3 – Revelation 21:2-3 – Hebrews 9:11-15 – I Corinthians 2:9)

Who and what will be absent from Heaven?  There will be no temple and no artificial light in Heaven since the Lamb of God will be all that is needed for perfect light and illuminated worship.  Unregenerate persons will also be excluded: notably adulterers, fornicators, idolaters, sorcerers, haters, murderers, drunkards, liars, unclean or lewd persons, the fearful, the unbelieving, the abominable, the effeminate, along with all who embrace contentiousness, jealousy, envy, wrath, selfishness, heresy, self-abuse or rowdiness. (Galatians 5:19-21 – Revelation 21:8 – I Corinthians 6:9) Sickness, sadness, sorrowful tears, pain and death are also notably absent. (Revelation 22:2 – Revelation 21:14) And there will be no more curses in Heaven. (Revelation 22:3) Nothing shall enter the holy city that will defile it in any possible way. (Revelation 21:27)

Who and what will be present in Heaven?  It is reserved for any redeemed person who “walks uprightly, works righteousness and speaks the truth in his heart.” (Psalm 15:1-2)  The glory of God will certainly be there. (Colossians 3:4)  Peace and rest will also be there. (Hebrews 4:9)  ) A “river of water of life” will be there. (Revelation 22:1) The “tree of life” is there, containing leaves that are good for “the healing of the nations.” (Revelation 22:2) Priceless treasures are there as well. (Matthew 6:20 – Luke 12:33)  Righteousness will be there. (II Peter 3:13) A “multitude which no man could number” will also be there. (Revelation 7:9)  Continuous praise and worship will be there. (Revelation 5:8-14)  The angelic host will be there. (Isaiah 6:1-3)  Twenty-four elders (old and new covenant saints) will be there. (Revelation 4:4)  The names of the saints will be inscribed there. (Hebrews 12:23)  The names of the twelve tribes of Israel will also be inscribed. (Revelation 21:12)  Streets of transparent gold will be there. (Revelation 21:21)  Twelve huge pearly gates will be there. (Revelation 21:13)  The New Jerusalem will have twelve foundations made of precious stones: jasper, sapphire, chalcedony, emerald, sardonyx, sardius, chysolite, beryl, topaz, chrysoprase, jacinth and amethyst.  The New Jerusalem will also be “foursquare,” a perfect square that is equal in all dimensions, measuring 1,500 miles in length, width and height. (Revelation 21:15-16)

Consider this.  Population experts disagree on the number of humans that have inhabited the planet since the beginning of time.  However, no one estimates the total number to be greater than 100 billion people.  An architect friend of mine calculated the approximate square footage of The New Jerusalem, based on the biblical description.  The New Jerusalem is beyond huge!  Assuming the maximum, that there were 100 billion inhabitants of Earth since the beginning and factoring in the 1,500 mile length, width and height of the city, there would be sufficient room within Heaven’s capital city (alone) for every person who ever lived to receive title to a mansion in excess of 100,000 square feet.  WOW!  We should collectively shout, “Rehoboth,” for God has potentially made room for all of us – those who accept and those who reject Him! (Genesis 26:22)

What rewards will be available in Heaven?  In the final chapter of Revelation, Christ issues this challenge: “Behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.” (Revelation 22:12 and II Corinthians 5:10)  Nevertheless, some believers may experience a loss of rewards, (not eternal life, but rewards), based solely upon their underlying motives for Kingdom service. (I Corinthians 3:10-15)

Five Distinctive Crowns will be awarded at the Bema, the Judgment Seat of Christ:
-           A Crown of Righteousness will be awarded to all who love Christ’s appearing. (II Timothy 4:8)
-           An Incorruptible Crown will be awarded to those who have disciplined their bodies and demonstrated self-control, a fruit of the Spirit. (I Corinthians 9:25-27)
-           A Crown of Life will be awarded to those who have patiently endured trials. (Revelation 2:10)
-           A Crown of Glory will be awarded to Godly leaders who were examples to the flock. (I Peter 5:2-4)
-           A Crown of Rejoicing or a Soul Winners Crown will be awarded to those who have served as midwives for spiritual births in the Kingdom of God. (I Thessalonians 2:19 – Daniel 12:3)

Specific rewards and CREATIVE responsibilities for overcomers will also be conferred by Jesus Christ. (Revelation 2:7 – Revelation 2:17 – Revelation 2:26 – Revelation 3:5 – Revelation 3:21 – Revelation 21:7)

My final word to every believer is simply this:  Be encouraged.  Keep your eyes on the prize.  We must never allow any person or thing to separate us from the love of God. (Romans 8:35-39)  It is a matter of life or death.  “Let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.” (Galatians 6:9)  Jesus Christ will return soon – very soon – to rapture the Church and to judge us.  Pastor Andrae Crouch penned a poignant message (years ago) that is even more timely today.

It won’t be long…when we’ll be leaving here…
It won’t be long…we’ll be going home…
Count the years as months…
Count the months as weeks…
Count the weeks as days…
Any day now…we’ll be going home.

Your participation in this ten-part series is truly appreciated, and I pray that it has proven to be inspirational and informative for you and yours.

Sisters and brothers, be continually blessed, and please (above all else) MAKE SURE YOU ARE READY TO MEET OUR SOON COMING KING.  Maranatha!

END-TIMES PROPHECY: THE IMMINENT RETURN OF CHRIST (Pt. VIII)

END-TIMES PROPHECY: THE IMMINENT RETURN OF CHRIST (Pt. VIII)

THE HOLY SPIRIT proclaims the urgent message that JESUS CHRIST will return soon.  To recap, for the sake of clarity we utilize the terms, “Phase One” and “Phase Two” to describe the SECOND COMING OF CHRIST Phase One is THE RAPTURE, and Phase Two is THE GLORIOUS APPEARANCE.  Some scriptures refer to the first event; others refer to the second.  THE RAPTURE is exclusive to a select group of people: THE CHURCH.  Christ will return soon and reveal Himself to His people.  This event will be accomplished in absolute secrecy, and the world will wonder: ‘What has happened?  Where are the missing people?’ (Matthew 24:37-42) At the Rapture, Jesus Christ will arrive (mid-air) to receive and transport believers to the “Father’s house,” in fulfillment of His promise. (John 14:1-3)

THE GLORIOUS APPEARANCE, on the other hand, is for EVERYONE, saint and sinner alike.  It will be a globally observed event, occurring at the end of The Tribulation Period.  In this second phase of Christ’s coming, “every eye shall see Him.” (Revelation 1:7) Approximately seven years after The Rapture, Christ will return to earth with great glory.  He will set down on the Mount of Olives; He will defeat Satan, the Antichrist, the false prophet and their followers; He will establish His earthly kingdom; and, He will ultimately judge fallen humanity.  And HE shall reign “for ever and ever.”  Hallelujah! (Luke 1:33 and Revelation 11:15)

Today’s lesson is a detailed recounting of the events that will take place immediately before, during and after THE GLORIOUS APPEARANCE OF JESUS CHRIST.  They are summarized below:

EVENTS OF THE GLORIOUS APPEARANCE

--A mid-east peace treaty between Israel and the Palestinians will be negotiated and signed.  This treaty is prophetically identified as ‘The Confirmation of the Abrahamic Covenant.’ (Genesis 12:1-2 – Genesis 15:18-21 – Daniel 9:27) The Antichrist will use the false peace that will emerge as a means of destroying many. (Daniel 8:23-25)
--The third Jerusalem Temple will be constructed. (Daniel 9:27  Revelation 11:1-2)  Jesus Christ, Daniel, Paul, and John all refer to the temple in the foretelling of last day events.  Therefore, we know it must be rebuilt.
--Temple sacrifices will be reinstituted in Israel in the last days. (Daniel 9:27 – Daniel 12:11)  Daniel prophesied that the Antichrist will terminate these daily sacrifices.  For this to occur, the Jewish sacrificial system must have first been restored in the latter days.  The Temple Institute has already created all temple furniture, vessels, and priestly garments, even the necessary blueprints for temple construction.  Currently, there are several hundred young Jewish men in training for the Levitical priesthood.
--A One-World Global Government will be formed.  (Daniel 2:40-44 – Daniel 7:23 – Revelation 13:7-8)  This is actually the revived Holy Roman Empire, which will encompass and dominate the world. The European Union has steadily moved forward in its attempt to unite Europe politically and economically.  It has succeeded in creating a European parliament, a court and a common currency.
--Many in this final generation will be open to receiving a mark on their right hands or foreheads from the Antichrist.  This could be easily facilitated by modern identification and tracking technology.  All those who do not take the mark of the beast (666) will be unable to participate in the economy, i.e. they will not be able to buy or sell anything. (Revelation 13:11-18)
--Babylon (formerly called Babel in Genesis 10:10) will re-emerge in the land of Shinar, known today as the nation of Iraq. (Isaiah 13) This city will be destroyed in one day. (Isaiah 21:9 – Jeremiah 51:8 – Revelation 14:8 – Revelation 18:2)
--Jerusalem will be a “cup of trembling” and a “burdensome stone” to all nations. (Zechariah 12:2-3)  We hear frequent news reports on the conflict(s) over Jerusalem.  The United Nations, the Vatican, and many world leaders want to make it an international city.  However, God decrees that Jerusalem is HIS, i.e. that HE has assigned it to the children/seed of Abraham, and that His name shall be there forever. (Genesis 15:18 – Leviticus 25:23 – II Chronicles 6:6)
--Many nations will unite and attempt to conquer Israel. (Psalm 83:4-8  Zechariah 12:2)  Russia (Magog and Gog) will re-emerge as a military power and become a leader in the attack on Israel.  We are currently witnessing the re-emergence of Russia as a world power, many years after the dissolution of the former Soviet Union.  Their quest to annex strategic portions (perhaps all) of the Ukraine is clear evidence of this.  Russia will be joined in this attack against Israel by Iran (Persia), Sudan (Cush), Libya (Put), Turkey (Meschech, Tubal, Gomer, Togarmah), Ethiopia, other Arab/Islamic nations, along with the “kings from the east,” who will deploy an army of 200 million soldiers to attack Israel. (Ezekiel 38 – Revelation 9:14-16 – Revelation 16:12
--The Euphrates River will be “dried up” and will become a military staging platform and entry point into Israel. (Revelation 16:12) Today, the massive Ataturk Dam in Turkey (completed in 1990) has the capability of holding back the water of the Euphrates and totally drying up its river bed.
--Israel will remain invincible because it is under divine covenant and protection. (Genesis 12:1-3 - Genesis 15:18 - Zechariah 12:6-9) Since 1948, the tiny nation of Israel has been attacked in three major wars and several lesser wars.  Despite being vastly outnumbered, they have managed to defeat every attacking foe.  Even during The Final Conflict, when it looks like Israel could be utterly annihilated, Almighty God will deliver her miraculously. (Jeremiah 30:3-7 – Zechariah 14 – Mark 13:14-20)  An invincible Israel makes no common sense and no military sense unless one understands and believes in the Word of God.

[Editor’s Note: The following is not intended to be a ‘slam’ against the largest branch of the institutional church, but it is a prophetic fact].  Either the present or future head of the Roman Catholic Church (The Pope) is the most likely candidate to become The False Prophet, who will work in conjunction with The Antichrist to form a One World Church (“Mystery Babylon”) that will be inclusive of all religions.  He will be empowered by Satan to perform impressive signs and wonders, including calling down fire from Heaven.  Eventually, the One World Church will worship The Antichrist exclusively. (Revelation 17 – Revelation 18:7 – Revelation 13:11-15)

--The Glorious Appearance of Jesus Christ will occur immediately after the seven-year Tribulation Period. (Matthew 24:29)
--The Glorious Appearance will be preceded by unprecedented changes in the sun, moon and stars. (Joel 2:30 and Matthew 24:29)

[Editor’s Note: Read my previous devotional series on “The Blood Moons” (alternatively, Google that topic or view film clips on Youtube.com) to gain further insight into how key astronomical events have aligned in the past (and have aligned in the present) with the Covenant Feasts of Israel.  These are powerful indicators of Christ’s imminent return.]

--Heaven will open and Jesus Christ will appear (seen by the whole world) riding on a white horse. (Revelation 19:11-16)
--Jesus Christ will be followed by the armies of heaven. (Revelation 19:14)
--The “Sign of the Son of Man” will appear in the heavens, visible to every person worldwide.  Most likely, this sign will be the cross. (Matthew 24:30)
--Jesus Christ will touch down on the earth with great power and glory. (Matthew 24:30)
--Jerusalem’s Eastern Gate will remain closed until The Messiah returns to earth.  After His Glorious Appearing, Jesus Christ will enter Jerusalem through the permanently sealed Eastern Gate. (Ezekiel 44:1-3)
--Unbelievers will mourn, for they will immediately realize that they are not ready to receive or be judged by Jesus Christ, The Messiah. (Matthew 24:30)
--The Beast (the Antichrist) and his armies will confront Jesus Christ in the Battle of Armageddon. (Revelation 17:14 – Revelation 19:19)
--All who have rejected Jesus Christ and survived the Tribulation Period will be killed, along with the armies that oppose Him, who will be destroyed by “the sword,” i.e. the Word of His mouth. (Revelation 19:21)
--Jesus Christ will cast the Beast (The Antichrist) and the False Prophet into the lake of fire. (Revelation 19:20)
--Satan will be cast into the bottomless pit and chained for one thousand years. (Revelation 20:1-3)
--The Resurrection of the Old Testament saints and Tribulation saints will occur. (Revelation 20:4)
--Christ will judge the nations and the wicked (with the assistance of His saints) and His Kingdom will be established forever. (Matthew, chapter 25 – Revelation 11:15 – Revelation 22:5)

There are two remaining devotional posts for this End-Times Series.  The next devotional will address two related issues: God’s final judgment and the specific nature and underlying reasons for the eternal punishment of the wicked.  After that, our final devotional will highlight the eternal joys of Heaven and the promised rewards for the righteous.  Please stay prayerfully attentive as our End-Times Series progresses.

END-TIMES PROPHECY: THE IMMINENT RETURN OF CHRIST (Pt. IX)

END-TIMES PROPHECY: THE IMMINENT RETURN OF CHRIST (Pt. IX)

THE HOLY SPIRIT proclaims the urgent message of JESUS CHRIST’s return – real soon.  Two postings remain for our End-Times Series.  The final entry (tomorrow) highlights the eternal joys of Heaven and the God-given rewards for the righteous.  Today’s devotional describes the final judgment of unsaved individuals, along with the nature of (and reasons for) the eternal punishment of all who willfully reject Christ.

The underlying reason for today’s discourse is to offer a clear-cut response to a humanistic question that has satanic origins: ‘How could a loving God condemn anyone to hell?’

Firstly, it is important to note that ALL of humanity must be judged by GOD.  Since the sins of believers are already adjudicated and absolved by the atoning grace of Calvary, (only) our Kingdom works and our motives will be judged in Heaven at The Bema, “the Judgment Seat of Christ.”  (I Corinthians 3:11-13 – II Corinthians 5:10 – Romans 14:10) Later, sinners will be summoned to ‘The Great White Throne Judgment’ where their entire lives will be evaluated and judged. (Revelation 20:11-15) In one way or another, ALL must account for the choices made in this life, as proclaimed by Jesus Christ:

Matthew 25:31-33 (NKJV)
When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory.  All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats.  And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left.

Secondly, it is necessary to define “hell” so that we may gain a fuller understanding of its nature and its purpose.  The scriptures tell us that “God is love” and “God is light.” (I John 4:8 and I John 1:5) To wit, in its most basic definition, hell is an eternal exile from Almighty God, who is “love” and “light.”  In other words, every occupant of hell will cease to sense the loving and enlightening presence of God.  As such, Jesus Christ described it as a place of “outer darkness” where “there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” (Matthew 8:12)

Above all, we must be mindful of the fact that hell is mentioned frequently by Jesus Christ, so there can be no reasonable or rightful disputation of its existence or purpose.  According to Jesus, the man who maliciously insults his brother is “in danger of hell fire.” (Matthew 5:22) According to Jesus, the greatest sin of the scribes and Pharisees was making their converts “twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.” (Matthew 23:15) According to Jesus, “every tree which brings not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.” (Matthew 3:10 – Luke 3:9) According to Jesus, HE “will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.” (Luke 3:17) Even when Christ commissioned his disciples to spread the gospel (initially in teams of two), he admonished them, “Fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul; but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” (Matthew 10:28) Jesus referred to hell by the Jewish term, “Gehenna,” which brought to mind the Valley of Hinnom, that fiery and smelly garbage dump outside of Jerusalem.  Indeed, it was a sobering and graphic picture that Jesus sought to convey, for hell is an eternal sentence without any opportunity for appeal or possibility of parole.

Even the parables of Jesus, His primary mode of teaching, emphasized the existence of hell: The Parable of the Tares and the Wheat (Matthew 13:24-30), The Parable of the Net (Matthew 13:47-50), The Parable of the Wedding Feast (Matthew 22:2-14), The Parable of the Faithful and Evil Servants (Matthew 24:42-51), and The Parable of the Ten Virgins (Matthew 25:1-3) all allude to the reality of hell.  Christ’s teachings on hell are also echoed by His apostles. (II Peter 2:1-9 –  II Thessalonians 1:7-9 – Revelation 20:9-15) However, Jesus Christ Himself poses the most important question for all to seriously consider: “What shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” (Mark 8:36) Losing one’s soul does not imply a cessation of existence, but rather a denial of supernatural grace, the love and light of God by which we were created and for which we were eternally intended.

How, then, does one wind up in hell?  Is it due to the cruel actions of a heartless Creator, or is it our personal choice?  The answer is quite simple.  Hell was never prepared or intended for us.  Jesus will make this clear the moment He dispatches lost souls to eternal punishment: “Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.” (Matthew 25:41) In other words, one’s entry into hell is based solely on a personal choice, i.e. one’s tragic decision to reject the Son of God (during the short span of time called life) in exchange for the so-called “pleasures of sin” and the punishment of an eternity without God. (Hebrews 11:25) Jesus reveals it as a crystal-clear choice: “He that believes on the Son has everlasting life: and he that believes not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abides on him.” (John 3:36)

In a word, if we wind up in hell, we have to go there over the Father’s gift of His Son, over the Son’s gift of His life, over the teaching of the gospel, over the entreating of the Holy Spirit, and over God’s purpose, destiny and design for us.  It is an awesome personal choice: to believe, or not to believe; to accept, or not to accept.  The choice is so clear, so easy; but it has eternal consequences.

John 3:18-20 (NKJV)
He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.  And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.  For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.

Nevertheless, why is hell necessary?  In truth, hell is an extension of covenantal grace.  Consider this.  If God ever allowed those who reject Him (defiling themselves and others) to enter into Heaven, then it would be an absolute denial of promised Heavenly benefits to those who have believed and honored His Word.  If God did that (as those who critique His judgment as “merciless” would have Him do), Heaven would not be Heaven for those who truly love and follow Him – because the unconverted would bring hellish ways and deeds into The New Jerusalem.  Think about it.  If one goes to hell, it is because he or she has hell within.

There is another important consideration.  God’s attributes are perfect and eternal.  God’s love is perfect; so also is God’s justice; so also is God’s wrath.  Our God cannot lie.  Neither can our God act in an unjust manner. (Numbers 23:19 – Deuteronomy 32:4 – Titus 1:2) So here’s the thing: GOD has measured out perfect salvation to every man by meting out perfect justice to the perfect scapegoat for sin, His Son, Jesus Christ.  God’s intention was/is never to condemn anyone to hell.  The Word declares that God is “not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” (II Peter 3:9) However, when we choose to reject God’s perfect remedy for our sins (the sacrificial atonement of Jesus Christ), we make the deliberate choice to position ourselves for the perfect wrath of God.  It is our choice, not God’s.

Hell represents a permanent loss of the goodness and grace of God.  It is both the absence of God (which causes the soul to be forever miserable and unfulfilled) and the punishment of God (which causes the body to reside forever in a place of unimaginable torment).  Consider this.  The lost will actually SEE JESUS face-to-face, but then they will be deprived forever of His presence and His glory.  That fact alone will make hell much more hellish.  Don’t you dare go there!  Please stay prayerfully attentive as our End-Times Series concludes on tomorrow.

Sisters and brothers, be continually blessed, and please (above all else) MAKE SURE YOU ARE READY TO MEET OUR SOON COMING KING.  Maranatha!

END-TIMES PROPHECY: IMMINENT RETURN OF CHRIST (Part VII)

END-TIMES PROPHECY: IMMINENT RETURN OF CHRIST (Part VII)

JESUS CHRIST will return soon.  Today, we continue an in-depth analysis of the Rapture of the Church.  In the Apostle Paul’s letter to Titus, he describes the Rapture as a highly anticipated event and a wonderfully blessed hope.  In Paul’s words, all true believers are “looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ.” (Titus 2:13)

When the Bible utilizes the word “hope” in this context, it does not mean some ‘nice thing’ we suspect might happen someday.  It is no random expectation, but it is a certain and certified fact, promised numerous times in God’s unfailing Word.  In this connection, “hope” means a present and confident expectation of a certain future event.   This hope has sustained believers-in-Christ for two millennia.  When redeemed loved ones transition (go to “sleep in Jesus,” as the Bible says), they await this resurrection, when the dead arise first, and along with living believers are transformed and taken away to live forever with our Lord.  But these same saints shall return at His glorious appearing to judge the world.  “For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.” And this is no temporary vacation, for according to Paul, “so shall we EVER be with the Lord.” (I Thessalonians 4:14 and I Corinthians 6:2) Now that is hope!

To recap, much confusion surrounds the interpretation of end-times events because the Bible unveils two very distinct apocalyptic occurrences.  For the sake of clarity, we label them “Phase One” and “Phase Two” of the Second Coming of Christ.  Some scriptures might ‘appear’ to be contradictory, because some of them refer (only) to the first event and some refer (only) to the second.  This is the source of misinterpretation and misunderstanding for many.  However, Phase One is THE RAPTURE, and Phase Two is THE GLORIOUS APPEARANCE. The distinctiveness of each phase is clearly evident in scripture.

THE RAPTURE is for a select group of people: The Church.  Christ will return soon and will reveal Himself only to His people.  Since this event will be accomplished in absolute secrecy, it will cause the world to wonder afterwards: ‘What has happened? Where are the missing people?’ (Matthew 24:37-42) At the Rapture, Christ arrives (mid-air) to receive and transport us to the “Father’s house” in fulfillment of His promise. (John 14:1-3)

THE GLORIOUS APPEARANCE, on the other hand, is for everyone, saint and sinner alike.  Indeed, it will be a globally observed event, occurring at the end of The Tribulation Period.  In this instance, “every eye shall see Him.” (Revelation 1:7) Approximately seven years after The Rapture, Christ will return to earth with great glory.

It is crucial that we outline details of the events of THE RAPTURE events and THE GLORIOUS APPEARANCE events in order to strike an objective comparison and contrast.  Today, we highlight events of The Rapture

EVENTS OF THE RAPTURE
--Jesus Christ will descend from Heaven, where He is preparing a place for us in the Father’s house. (John 14:1-3 – I Thessalonians 4:16)
--He will come again to receive us unto Himself. (John 14:1-3)
--The Lord will shout as He descends, which is a powerful resurrection command. (I Thessalonians 4:16)
--All of this will take place in the “twinkling of an eye.”  (I Corinthians 15:52)
--We (believers) will hear the voice of the archangel.  (I Thessalonians 4:16)
--We (believers) will also hear the trumpet of God, the final trumpet summons for His Church. (I Thessalonians 4:16)
--Christ will resurrect those who have fallen asleep in Him, i.e. the deceased believers, who will rise first.  The corruptible ashes of their dead bodies will be made incorruptible and joined together with their spirits, which Jesus will bring with Him.  (I Thessalonians 4:15-17)
--Believers who are alive shall be changed, i.e. made incorruptible by having our bodies made to be “immortal.” (I Corinthians 15:51;53)
--All believers will be caught up together. (I Thessalonians 4:17)
--Deceased and living believers will have a wonderful reunion in the clouds, i.e. a joyous meeting with our Savior in the air. (I Thessalonians 4:17)
--Jesus will take us to the Father’s house and receive us.  According to His promise, “that where I am, there you may be also.” (John 14:3)
--Believers shall always be with the Lord.  (I Thessalonians 4:17)
--After the Rapture, believers will stand individually before the judgment seat of Christ and our Kingdom works will be evaluated by Him. (Romans 14:10 – II Corinthians 5:10 – I Corinthians 3:11-15)
--This judgment rewards believers and prepares us for our ultimate union with Christ.  Before returning to earth to judge the world, Christ will marry His Bride (The Church) and The Marriage Supper of the Lamb will take place in Heaven.  (Revelation 22:12 – Revelation 19:1-10)
--After the Church’s removal from the world, an unprecedented time of divine wrath will occur, which Jesus Christ called the “great tribulation.”  This is the second half of the seven-Year Tribulation Period. (Matthew 24:21 – Revelation, chapters 8-18)

Our next devotional will focus on the extensive and intricate events of THE GLORIOUS APPEARING.  Please stay prayerfully attentive as our end-times series progresses.

END-TIMES PROPHECY: IMMINENT RETURN OF CHRIST (Part VI)

END-TIMES PROPHECY: IMMINENT RETURN OF CHRIST (Part VI)

Today, we commence our detailed discussion of THE RAPTURE OF THE CHURCH.  We acknowledge the existence of three major perspectives pertaining to this prophetic and historic event: 1) Pre-Tribulation Rapture, 2) Mid-Tribulation Rapture, and 3) Post-Tribulation Rapture.  Regarding Christ’s return, the timing of each is obvious.  Let’s take a closer look.

The least commonly held view is the MID-TRIBULATION RAPTURE, whose proponents believe Christ will return for His Church approximately 3½ YEARS AFTER the signing of a mid-east peace treaty that is prophetically identified as ‘The Confirmation of the Abrahamic Covenant.’ (Daniel 9:27) Those who hold this view believe that the Church must pass through a severe period of “persecution.” (II Timothy 3:12) They believe that this persecution will occur during the first half of The Tribulation, but Christ will then return to prevent His people from experiencing the worst part of divine wrath, i.e. The Great Tribulation (the final 3½ years of human history). They also point to scriptures that predict momentous tribulation for the nation of Israel.  However, this leads to a major error in Biblical interpretation, for they fail to distinguish the NATION ISRAEL from SPIRITUAL ISRAEL.  While the two are certainly connected, they are not one and the same. Indeed, the NATION ISRAEL WILL experience the Tribulation Period, but the manifold grace of God will prevail for their security and salvation. (Revelation 7:1-14) SPIRITUAL ISRAEL will not be present during “the time of Jacob's trouble,” for these persons are born-again believers in Christ. (Jeremiah 30:7)

The second most commonly held view is that of a POST-TRIBULATION RAPTURE, which holds that Christ will return for His Church AT THE END of the seven-year Tribulation Period. Proponents of this view contend that the scriptures specify that Christ's return occurs at the sounding of “the LAST trumpet.” (I Corinthians 15:52) They believe that this trumpet sound is synonymous with that of Revelation 11:15, when “the kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord.”  On the surface, this seems to be a valid argument, but it is actually erroneous since “the last trumpet” (I Thessalonians 4:16 and I Corinthians 15:52) is the “trumpet of God,” which is the conclusive call at the end of The Church Age for a prepared people who will now meet their Savior face-to-face in the air.  On the other hand, the trumpet sound of Revelation 11:15 is ‘an angel’s trumpet,’ which simply heralds the start of “the third woe” that rains down final judgments upon all rejecters of Christ, the enemies of God. (Revelation 11:14-18)

The third and most commonly held view is that of a PRE-TRIBULATION RAPTURE, i.e. that Christ will return for His Church AT THE BEGINNING of the seven-year Tribulation Period. This is my personal view and that of a clear majority of prophecy scholars and teachers, one which is clearly supported in scripture.  At Christ’s coming, all deceased believers will be resurrected and all living believers will be changed instantaneously. (I Thessalonians 4:13-18) The most compelling argument for a Pre-Tribulation Rapture is found in the prophetic writings of Daniel.  During Daniel’s seventieth week (The 7-Year Tribulation), the Word declares that the people of God “shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.” (Daniel 9:24; 12:1)

Although some people will be saved during The Tribulation (especially Jews), which is a manifestation of God’s abundant grace, the primary emphasis of The Tribulation Period is the outpouring of God’s wrath. (Revelation 6:16-17; 11:18; 14:19 and Zephaniah 1:15;18) Clearly, the Word informs believers that we are “NOT appointed…to wrath,” but unto salvation by Jesus. Christ. (I Thessalonians 5:9) Therefore, simple logic dictates that the Church should (and must) be absent during this time of God’s great wrath. After the Rapture, Christians will “appear before the judgment seat of Christ.” (II Corinthians 5:10) However, this will not be a judgment (in the sense of a criminal trial) to determine guilt or innocence, since at Calvary’s cross all our sins were judged and punished via the substitutionary sacrifice of the Savior. Rather, it will be a judgment of Kingdom works and our underlying motives for the same. Various crowns and rewards will be distributed in accordance with the character and consistency of our deeds. (I Corinthians 3:11-13)

Now that we understand ‘WHEN’ The Rapture will occur (relative to the events of The Tribulation Period), let’s look more closely at the ‘WHAT,’ the ‘WHO’ and the 'HAPPENINGS' surrounding Christ’s second coming.  First and foremost, no one knows the exact timing of His imminent appearance.  Jesus Christ warns that “the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” (Luke 12:40)

The term, “Rapture” does not appear in the scriptures, but it is derived from a 4th century translation of the Greek word, “harpadzo,” which suggests that believers in Christ will be “caught up.”  There is scriptural precedence for this: “Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.” (Genesis 5:24, NIV) If God did it before (for one righteous man), He can certainly do it again for all those who have been declared to be “the righteousness of God.” (II Corinthians 5:21)

WHO will participate in The Rapture?  The Apostle Paul said Christ will return for “a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing…holy and without blemish.” (Ephesians 5:27) Therefore, now is “the time that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?  And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?” (I Peter 4:17-18) Nevertheless, we fully appreciate the fact that our right standing with God is accomplished (only) through the blood atonement and resurrection power of Jesus Christ!

Much confusion surrounds the interpretation of these end-times events because the Bible actually describes two distinct occurrences.  For the sake of clarity, let’s label them as follows: Phase One and Phase Two of the Second Coming of Christ.  Phase One is THE RAPTURE. Phase Two is THE GLORIOUS APPEARANCE.  The distinctiveness of each phase is evident in scripture.

THE RAPTURE is for a select group of people.  That is, Christ will return for His Church, only to reveal Himself to His people.  As such, this event will be accomplished in absolute secrecy, thereby causing the whole world to wonder afterwards: ‘What has happened?  Where are the missing people?’ (Matthew 24:37-42) In the Rapture, Christ arrives suddenly (mid-air) to receive His Church and to transport us to the “Father’s house,” in fulfillment of His promise. (John 14:1-3) There we shall appear before the Judgment Seat of Christ and we will also participate in the Marriage Supper of the Lamb. (II Corinthians 5:8-10 and Revelation 19:1-10)

On the other hand, THE GLORIOUS APPEARANCE is a totally public and globally observed event, which will occur at the close of The Great Tribulation.  In this instance, “every eye shall see Him.” (Revelation 1:7) Exactly seven years after The Rapture, Christ will return to the earth with great glory; He will set down on the Mount of Olives; He will defeat Satan, the Antichrist, the false prophet and their followers; He will establish His earthly kingdom; and, He will ultimately judge fallen humanity. He shall reign "for ever and ever." (Luke 1:33 and Revelation 11:15)

Tomorrow’s devotional recounts a thorough breakdown of the events of Phase One and Phase Two.  Please stay prayerfully attentive as our end-times series progresses.

END-TIMES PROPHECY: IMMINENT RETURN OF CHRIST (Part V)

END-TIMES PROPHECY: IMMINENT RETURN OF CHRIST (Part V)

THE HOLY SPIRIT continues to proclaim the extremely urgent message that JESUS CHRIST will soon return. Today, we commence our discussion of The Tribulation Period, highlighting the Global Economic System, the One World Government, the One World Church and The Unholy Trinity, which consists of Satan, the Antichrist and the False Prophet.  Please exercise patience since these events will not necessarily be presented in chronological order, and we will require a minimum of three lessons to complete this segment of our series.

First, let’s take a quick snapshot of the end-times condition of the institutional church (as opposed to the invisible church) and its significance.  The scriptures state emphatically that the “spirit of antichrist” is “already…in the world.” (I John 4:3) This spirit is clearly exemplified by our society’s growing disdain for Christianity, Christians and Christ.  Jesus warned that true believers would be “hated of all men for my name’s sake.” (Luke 21:17)

Exhibit A:  In certain nations, the Bible is totally banned, as is any public assembly for Christian worship.  In the USA, we have witnessed a radical erosion of the faith of our fathers.  For example, the Constitution has been misconstrued and misapplied to ban praying and reading the Bible in public schools, along with displaying nativity scenes in civic squares or posting The Ten Commandments in courthouses.  Even more tragic is a little-known fact: More Christians have been martyred during the past century than in all previous centuries combined.  This vicious reaction against persons of faith will only grow worse.

Exhibit B:  False teachers have surfaced within the institutional church, misleading many with fleshly promises of ‘Bigger-and-Better’ in this present world, with little regard for the world to come. (II Peter 2:1-2) Whenever churches emphasize individual prosperity vis-à-vis global evangelism and mission, they have lost focus on the Kingdom of God as taught by Jesus Christ, “the author and finisher of our faith.” (Colossians 3:1 and Hebrews 12:2) Peter counsels that such false teachers will seek to “exploit” us due to their greedy and covetous spirits. (II Peter 2:3) Not only will there be false leaders and prophets in the end-times, false messiahs will also be revealed, confusing many with deceptive signs and wonders. (Matthew 7:22-23 and Matthew 24:5;24) Caution: Never pursue signs and the wonders; always hunger and thirst for Christ. (Matthew 5:6)

Exhibit C:  Since 2008, the world has experienced a momentous financial meltdown and recession, which yet threatens to devolve into a global depression.  Some economists believe this trend is likely to continue, causing many of the so-called ‘first-world’ industrialized nations to lose financial footing.  Why is this relevant?  It is likely that shaky fiscal conditions are the precursor to the coming takeover of the global economy by the Antichrist (the beast), in conjunction with ten kingdoms (ten regional powers) that will support him financially, politically and militarily.  The apocalyptic writer, John, foresaw a global economic system that will be controlled exclusively by the Antichrist.  This end-times fiscal coup d'état is highly plausible due to 1) the development of global banking technologies, 2) the presence of central banks in most nations, and 3) the existence of international banking agencies such as The World Bank Group and the United Nations Development Group.

In the words of John…

Revelation 13:16-18 (NKJV)
16 He [the Antichrist] causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, 17 and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.  18 Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666.

The Antichrist’s global financial control will be the foundation of his power over nations and individuals.  During the latter half of the 7-year Tribulation Period (known as The Great Tribulation), the Antichrist will assert absolute financial, political and religious authority over the planet with the assistance of The False Prophet.  Without one’s personal assent to the rule of the Antichrist (demonstrated via the decision to accept the mark of the beast and to publicly worship him), there will be absolutely NO participation in the global economy.  That is, there will be no ability (NONE) to sell or purchase anything of value, such as groceries, toiletry items, clothing, or any personal property whatsoever.  Consider this.  Even access to individual bank accounts and investment funds will be closed to those who have not taken the mark of the beast.  Without the mark, it will be impossible to access one’s personal funds, IRA, 401k, pension checks, social security checks, or any other valuables stored in a banking institution.

However, be aware that the decision to accept the mark of the beast is a one-way ticket to hell:

Revelation 14:9-11 (NKJV)
Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on his forehead or on his hand, 10 he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. 11 And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name.”

Future lessons in this series will explore the Antichrist and the mark of the beast in much more detail.  However, on Monday we will examine the Rapture of the Church, which should prove to be an intriguing study for all.
