THE MILK OF HUMAN KINDNESS

Kindness is nurturing and sustaining.  As such, it is a fundamental and indispensable human need.   In one of William Shakespeare’s well known plays, “Macbeth,” he writes about “the milk of human kindness.” As such, kindness is, indeed, life-giving food for every soul.  In truth, mutual kindness is such an extraordinary gift – so blessed, so beneficial – that none of us can maintain genuine peace of mind or find fulfillment in its absence.

The Apostle Paul admonished the Church of Ephesus, and by extension all future generations of Christians, “Be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.” (Ephesians 4:32)  If the entire world, especially those who profess relationships with Christ, would pause for one moment before we speak to make sure that our words are positive sources of healing and hope (not weapons of anger or resentment), lasting peace among individuals, groups and nations would be much easier to achieve.

Before Belinda and I married, we had what I refer to as “The Talk.”  We shared our life stories – the good, the bad, the ugly – and then we made what is perhaps the most important pledge that can undergird the divine covenant of marriage.  On that day, we vowed that, no matter what, we would treat each other with mutual respect and kindness.  It is an innate need that is so fundamental and so powerful, that true kindness even trumps human sexuality.  Think about it.  Allow me to be transparent.  It is not always easy to keep our agreement.  Marriage is hard work, no matter what anyone says.  Whenever marriages encounter moments of frustration, upset, grief, anger, or disappointment, it is so easy to revert to the carnality and pride that becomes the opening pitch in ‘the blame game.’  That is why self-control is a key component of “the fruit of the Spirit.” (Galatians 5:22-23)

Question: Who do you and I need to forgive…to offer acceptance and kindness…before the sun sets today?

Question: Whose flaws, failures, foibles and fiascoes do you and I need to “cover” with love, instead of exposing to pride, anger, rejection, or indifference?

The Apostle Peter said it so eloquently and succinctly: “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers a multitude of sins.” (I Peter 4:8, NIV)  In the Pauline epistles, we learn that true believers refuse to keep an active accounting of the wrongdoings of others.  Quite the contrary; instead, we who are under the covenant of love, somehow learn to bear all things, believe all things, hope all things and endure all things.  (I Corinthians, chapter 13)

In your quest to exemplify kindness, prayerfully consider the following gems of wisdom:

My own writing today has motivated me to make a phone call.  I refuse to judge.  I will not hold on to the past.  I will forgive.  I will love.  I will be kind.  I will strive – with all my body, soul and spirit – to become more and more like Jesus Christ.  Perhaps, you and I can humbly approach the throne of God with this mutual prayer:  “Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, we ask for Your forgiveness and for a lasting endowment of Your very essence – LOVE – so that we may recognize our own faults and sins and so that we may be genuinely loving, forgiving, open and kind to others.  We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ.  Amen.”

Sisters and brothers, be continually blessed!

TRUST GOD...BECAUSE HE'S GOT YOUR BACK!

Believers can always depend upon the providence and provision of God.  Case in point: There once was a young Christian named Brenda who had been invited by friends to go rock climbing.  Despite the fact that she had never climbed any farther than out of her bed in the morning, Brenda decided to face her fears and accept the invitation of her persuasive friends to quite literally go where she had never gone before.

As the group of friends approached the massive granite cliff, Brenda’s fear of heights kicked in; nevertheless she gamely donned her climbing gear, secured her rope, and started to scale the face of the rocky cliff.  Finally, they reached a ledge where she could rest and regroup.  However, while suspended on the ledge of the cliff, Brenda’s safety rope snapped and struck her in the eye, dislodging her contact lens.

So there she was, completely gripped by fear and hanging precariously on a rocky ledge, with hundreds of feet below and hundreds of feet yet to ascend.  Brenda looked and looked, hoping to find her contact lens on that ledge, but it just wasn’t there.  Panic rose in her throat and Brenda felt so far from home and safety.  To make matters worse, her eyesight was extremely blurry without the lens.  Growing more desperate by the moment, Brenda looked Heavenward and prayed to the Lord for help to remain calm and to find the missing contact lens.

After a few moments, Brenda conquered her fears and soon made it to the top of the granite cliff.  Once there, her friends examined her eye and her clothing, but the lens was nowhere to be found.  As Brenda looked out at the range of hills and mountains surrounding them, she recalled a scripture verse: “The eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong.” (II Chronicles 16:9)  She thought prayerfully to herself, “Lord, YOU see all of these mountains.  YOU know every rock and every stone…and YOU know exactly where my contact lens is…so please help me.”

Later on, as they walked down the back trail to the bottom of the cliff, they met up with a party of climbers who had recently completed their ascent and descent.  One of them shouted out, “Hey you guys!  Anybody lose a contact lens?”  It was startling enough that this climber had actually found Brenda’s tiny lens among all the dirt and rocks on the cliff, but how he discovered the lens was even more incredible.  A tiny ant was moving slowly across the face of the rocky cliff…carrying Brenda’s contact lens on its back!  WOW!

Brenda’s father was a Christian cartoonist.  When she shared her phenomenal testimony about the missing contact lens, the ant, and the prayer, he drew a cartoon picture of the tiny ant lugging the contact lens on its back.  Underneath the picture, he wrote this powerful faith caption: “Lord, I don’t know WHY you want me to carry this heavy thing.  I can’t eat it…I don’t know what it is…and it’s awfully heavy.  But if YOU want me to do it…I’ll carry it…for YOU!”

Never ever forget: Wherever God guides…wherever God guides…He provides.  One of my favorite Bible passages (Proverbs 3:5-6) was inscribed on a porcelain plaque that hung on the dining room wall in the home of my youth.  It stays with me every single day of my life. “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.  In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)  Whenever you cannot trace God’s hand, trust God’s heart.  TRUST GOD…BECAUSE HE’S GOT YOUR BACK!  Sisters and brothers, be continually blessed!

THE LORD OUR SANCTIFIER

THE LORD OUR SANCTIFIER

One of the most inspirational (yet little known) revelations of the personality and power of Almighty God is His name that is revealed in Exodus 31:13.  In the Hebrew language, this Old Testament text highlights the name of God as “Jehovah M’gaddischcem.”  The meaning of this name implicitly underscores both the grace and mercy of our God.  For herein the Creator manifests Himself to frail and fallen humanity as “The Lord Our Sanctifier.”  This is absolute cause for celebration since “all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)

According to Dictionary.com, the word “sanctify” means “to make holy, to consecrate, to purify, to render legitimate, to entitle to respect (and) to make productive or conducive to spiritual blessing.”  Wow!  God does all of that for us – despite the fact that we have (at times) so willfully turned deaf ears to His Word and will for our lives.

How is such a marvelous act of grace accomplished in us?  First of all, we are purged from sin through the blood atonement of the Lamb of God. (John 1:29 and Colossians 1:19-21)  Secondly, we are declared to be the “righteousness of God” by the authority of His Word. (II Corinthians 5:21 and Philippians 3:9)  Implicit in both of these acts is the indisputable fact that we have no inherent righteousness on which we can either stand or boast.

To “sanctify” also means “to set apart for service.”  I am simply amazed that God makes the deliberate choice to use flawed finite vessels to accomplish His divine purpose.  Nevertheless, in the words of the Apostle Paul, “we have this treasure [His Holy Spirit] in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God, and not of us.” (II Corinthians 4:7)  What an awesome God!

That fact that we are “sanctified” means that we have willingly become the property and possession of the Lord.  As such, in a very literal sense, His Spirit ‘possesses’ us.  This does not mean that He deprives us of free will and personal choice, but He does inhabit our body temples and He influences us to honor His Word and to walk in His way.  I Peter 2:9 (KJV) declares that we are “a peculiar people.” In no way does this scripture imply that the people of God are somehow ‘strange’ or ‘weird’ regarding our attitudes or actions.  Rather, it is a simple declaration that we are the particular property of God, His blood-bought and Calvary-purchased possessions who exemplify His praise and evangelize His gospel message.

Jehovah M’gaddischcem is “The Lord Our Sanctifier.”  I love the fact that He chooses to set us apart for His service – to graciously employ and utilize us as temporal agents of His eternal salvation plan.  It humbles me beyond words that the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords, the Creator of the Ends of the Earth, the Master of the Universe would somehow choose to covenant with, to fellowship with, and to use me in the service of His Kingdom.  And I am sure that you feel the same way.  Sisters and brothers, be continually blessed!

2013 MISSION TRIP REPORT

It is a personal pleasure to report to our family and friends regarding the tremendous favor that God granted during our 2013 Mission Trip to Kenya & South Africa.  During the past twelve months, God has connected us with numerous superlative ministry partnerships and opportunities.  During our recent trip (September 18 – October 18), God endowed us with significant grace, traveling mercies, divine protection and (most importantly) a level of demonstrable effectiveness in the service of His Kingdom and people.  To wit, hundreds of souls are saved, delivered, healed, supported, encouraged and tangibly blessed!

Therefore, first of all, Belinda and I wish to extend heartfelt gratitude to ALMIGHTY GOD for His goodness, grace and mercy that is so freely shared with us.  It is especially important to note how God protected us during our visitation to Nairobi, Kenya.  Belinda and I had planned a trip to the Westgate Mall on the Saturday that so many were killed and maimed by terrorists.  Extensive ministry activities prevented this visit, and we are eternally grateful to our all-wise and all-knowing God.

Secondly, we wish to convey sincere appreciation for two pastoral families who either welcomed us into their home in South Africa or took care of our home while we were traveling:
Pastor David & Lady Abigail Boikhutso (Randburg, South Africa)
Pastor Thomas & Lady Shirley Bordeaux (New Haven, CT, USA)

Thirdly, we are so thankful for the pastoral and church families of Kenya and South Africa who networked with us and supported us enthusiastically during various conferences, crusades and church services:
