HOW TO GATHER HONEY INSTEAD OF BEE STINGS (Part I)

I was blessed to read a thought-provoking article by Moises P. Reconalla. It speaks quite eloquently and cogently about the power of words, utilizing two of my favorite books. It’s rather long, so I’ll reprint half of it today and half tomorrow. Please read and prayerfully consider.

Few people realize the importance of the words they speak. There is almost no way to overemphasize the importance of what we say, yet most people give it almost no thought, usually speaking without thinking.

The inspirational and classical author, Og Mandino, once asked, “Why is it then that so many of us go out of our own way to offend others with criticism and offensive judgments that so often come back to haunt us? Why do we allow our big mouths to dig ruts in our path so deep that our forward progress is finally nil?” He continued and commented, “If your tongue has been busy accumulating enemies for you, enemies you do not need who can harm you, now is as good a time as any to cease and desist. How sad it would be for such a petty habit to destroy your great potential.”

Another very well-known author described the worst effects of criticism on the receivers. In Dale Carnegie’s book entitled “How to Win Friends and Influence People,” he declares “Criticism is futile because it puts a man on the defensive, and usually makes him strive to justify himself. Criticism is dangerous, because it wounds a man’s precious pride, hurts his sense of importance, and arouses his resentment.”

Dale Carnegie reminds us, “When dealing with people, let us remember we are not dealing with creatures of logic. We are dealing with creatures of emotion, creatures bristling with prejudices and motivated by pride and vanity.” He warns that “criticism is a dangerous spark – a spark that is liable to cause an explosion in the powder magazine of pride – an explosion that sometimes hastens death.”

Carnegie offered two very good examples to clarify his statements. “General Leonard Wood was criticized and not allowed to go with the army to France. That blow to his pride probably shortened his life. Bitter criticism drove Thomas Chatterton, the English poet, to suicide.”

The famed Greek mathematician and philosopher, Pythagoras, once said, “A wound from a tongue is worse than a wound from a sword for the latter affects only the body, the former affects the spirit.”

In the Bible, James the brother and disciple of Jesus Christ, issues a warning about the evil poison that can emerge from the tongue. He described people who use their tongues to praise and bless God, then turn around to use their tongues to speak evil of one another. “With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.” (James 3:9-10)

We cannot use our tongues to curse and bad-mouth our brethren, then continue ‘business as usual’ with our relationships with God.

The Bible clearly states that such tongue-behavior is a principle characteristic of hypocrites. “The hypocrite with his mouth destroys his neighbor.” (Proverbs 11:9)

The greatest teacher of all times, The Lord Jesus Christ, reveals to us that our words are extremely and eternally important. In Matthew 12:36-37, Jesus exclaimed, “But I tell you that men will have to give account on the Day of Judgment for every careless word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted and by your words you will be condemned.”

My friends, this should cause all of us to think soberly and enter into self-examination mode.

RAISE PEOPLE UP!

I love the inspirational saga that is the life of Mike Marino.  It speaks of the need to forge genuine human connections.  It is an indisputable fact that TOGETHER, we are significantly greater than the sum of our individual parts.  Let’s tune in on a conversation between Mike and Marlene, a person who was offering to help him.  Read and listen with your heart.

I know that I was not sent to help you, Marlene.  You were sent to help me.  However you cannot help me, Marlene, unless I lift you up first, higher and higher.

Did I ever tell you about Emma, a little four-year-old girl that I met while doing volunteer work at the Crippled Children's Hospital in 1970?  Many women had taken a morning sickness drug called Thalidomide before it was officially approved by the Food and Drug administration.  As a result, numerous babies came into the world with profound birth defects.  Little Emma was born without arms and legs.

Many of these babies were brought to children’s hospitals all across America.  Since Emma had no other means of mobility, a caring therapist made a leather bucket for her to sit in.  The bucket was attached to an -eighteen-by-eighteen-inch board with casters on all corners.  Emma would wiggle her torso back and forth to propel herself forward in the hospital halls.

Emma was a cute kid who wore pink burettes in her pigtail hair.  She also wore a diaper and a white T-shirt, adorned with a bunny rabbit picture.

I was doing volunteer work and they put me in a room with all boys.  Each of those boys had serious disabilities from birth.

Emma rolled right up into the boys’ room.  One of the boys told me not to let Emma in because she was a girl.  I let her in the room any way and Emma made her way over to my ankle.

Then Emma said, “Mr. Mike, pick me up, I want to see what they are doing on the table.”

I told Emma, without looking down at her, “I cannot pick you up because I am not allowed to touch any of the children.”

The nurse that was observing the scene said, “You can pick her up, Mr. Mike.”

One of the boys shouted out, “No.  Don't pick her up, Mr. Mike, don't pick her up!”

I had no idea how I was going to get her out of the bucket.  But I put my knee on the board and managed to free her from the bucket.  Emma had a diaper on and I was afraid the diaper would come off.  I held Emma up for two seconds so she could see the model cars and coloring books on the table.

When I went to put her back into the bucket, Emma looked at me with big brown eyes and said, “Don't put me down, Mr. Mike.  I want you to hold me.”

I said, “I am holding you.”

Emma said, “I want you to hold me close, Mr. Mike!”

I said, “I am holding you close.”

Emma said, “No, Mr. Mike, you have to hold me real close.”

I pulled Emma close to me and Emma put her head on my shoulder.  She had one tiny finger growing directly out of the side of her shoulder, and underneath her T-shirt sleeve she pressed her little finger against my shoulder and said, “I love you Mr. Mike!”

I broke down and cried like a baby.  I could not stop crying.  The boy who said “Don’t pick her up” shouted out loudly, “I told him not to pick her up, and this guy just doesn’t listen!”

The nurse came over, brought me a box of Kleenex and took Emma away from me.  She smiled brightly and said, “You're going to bed young lady.  You’ve had enough fun for today.”

Little Emma was grinning and laughing out loud!

I told the nurse, “That little girl has a finger under her T-shirt sleeve and she pressed it against me.”

The nurse replied, “Mr. Mike, you are not the first person Emma has touched with that little finger and you will not be the last.”

In that unexpected moment, Emma had touched me and somehow transformed me into a caring person!

After that, God's grace was increasingly manifested in my life.  I become stronger and accomplished many things by the grace and power of God.  The reason I tell you this story, Marlene, is because Emma knew that I needed help really badly, but she could not possibly help me until I raised her up!

That’s what I do now, Marlene.  My purpose in life is to RAISE PEOPLE UP!  So now, nobody can begin to help me until I raise them up first.  

Thanks Mr. Marino!  I am inspired by your story and I love the positive theme you’re now living by.

In the optimistic words of Mike Marino, “This is going to be a good day, because I am going to make it a good day!  If I cannot see the bright side, I polish the other side that I can see.  Nobody is going to rain on my parade!”

DON'T BE AFRAID OF YOURSELF

DON’T BE AFRAID OF YOURSELF

You may not know it, but I have the fondest affection for poetry.  So I will share one of my all-time favorites with you.  It’s a poem by Robert Frost, popularly known as “The Road Less Traveled,” but originally entitled “The Road Not Taken.”  Enjoy, and I’ll add a bit of application afterwards!

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,

And sorry I could not travel both

And be one traveler, long I stood

And looked down one as far as I could

To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,

And having perhaps the better claim,

Because it was grassy and wanted wear;

Though as for that the passing there

Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black.

Oh, I kept the first for another day!

Yet knowing how way leads on to way,

I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I –

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.

My friend, please remember that when the major events of faith were proclaimed in The Holy Writ, they were typically preceded by the following divine pronouncement: “FEAR NOT!” (Luke 2:10)  In fact, this powerful phrase appears (in one form or another) approximately 170 times in scripture.  By the sheer number of biblical inclusions, it seems obvious that GOD IS TRYING TO TELL US SOMETHING, a mission-critical truth that reveals one vital aspect of our faith journey, i.e. the need to have TOTAL TRUST IN GOD and to have COMPLETE CONFIDENCE IN THE DIVINE PURPOSE that has uniquely positioned us on this planet.

Believe it or not, SOME PEOPLE EXIST IN LITERAL FEAR OF THEMSELVES.  Consider this.  While it is actually commendable to embrace ‘getting along’ with others, you and I were not created to BLEND IN with every person or situation.  Just because someone does not seem to understand you, i.e. those individual quirks and idiosyncrasies that are part and parcel of your overall life experience, there is absolutely no need to discard or diminish yourself, becoming a carbon copy or clone of others.

Bottom-line: DON’T BE AFRAID TO TREAD LESS TRAVELED ROADS AND MANIFEST YOUR UNIQUENESS.  Truthfully speaking, when GOD made YOU, He threw away the mold!  Please understand the spirit of my words.  In no way am I seeking to minimize CHRIST (or others) and maximize YOU.  After all, true believers are being daily conformed to “the image of Christ.” (Romans 8:29)  What I am saying here is that there is something so uncommon and special about GOD’S DESIGN AND DESTINY FOR YOU that (as you are being transformed into the image of His Son) The Father never seeks to nullify or eliminate the particular PERSON(ALITY) that He specially crafted on the day of your birth.  Therefore, you must understand it; you must embrace it; and, you must use it for HIS glory.

YOU AND YOUR DEEDS ARE SIGNIFICANT

Whenever you are tempted to feel like you or your life’s work are somewhat small compared to others or contrasted with your original plans and dreams, prayerfully consider the following story.

A vacationing businessman was walking along a beach when he saw a young boy.  Along the shore were many starfish that had been washed up by the tide and were sure to die before the tide returned.  The boy walked slowly along the shore and occasionally reached down and tossed one of the beached starfish back into the ocean.

The businessman, hoping to teach the boy a lesson in common sense, walked up to him and said, “I’ve been watching what you are doing, son.  You have a good heart, and I know you mean well, but do you realize how many beaches there are around here and how many starfish are dying on every beach every day.  Surely such an industrious and kind-hearted boy such as yourself could find something better to do with your time.  Do you really think that what you are doing is going to make a difference?”

The boy looked up at the man, and then looked down at a starfish by his feet.  He picked up the starfish, and as he gently tossed it back into the ocean, he said, “It makes a difference to that one!”

My friend, if you can somehow make a difference with just one person, your life is incredibly significant and abundantly blessed.

LIFE IN THE SON (Part V)

As stated multiple times in this series, it is mission critical to recognize, reverence and receive JESUS CHRIST, THE SOURCE OF ALL LIFE.  FOR WHOEVER TAKES THE SON…GETS EVERYTHING! 

Tune in with your spirit to discern the HOPE that is always resident in the Word:

I John 5:11-12  

And this is the record…that GOD has given to us eternal life, and this life is in HIS SON.  He who has THE SON has life; and he who has not the Son of God has not life.

Ephesians 4:13-15  

Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.  That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; but speaking the truth in love may GROW UP INTO HIM in all things, which is the head, even CHRIST.

Romans 8:28-29   

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.  For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

Despite our origins, we are PREDESTINED FOR LIFE, a life that is abundantly more than we could possibly imagine! (John 10:10)  The scriptures inform us that GOD “has chosen us IN HIM before the foundation of the world.” (Ephesians 1:4)  For example, as God created Adam, He blew into him His BREATH (the PNEUMA, the ZOE, the very life of God) and man became a living soul.  To wit, it was neither the DAY that God made Adam, nor the WAY that God shaped Adam, that made Adam “ADAM!”  Adam become a living soul when (and only when) DIVINITY was exhaled into the nostrils of humanity.   So if Adam came into being because of what came forth OUT-OF-GOD, simple logic dictates that (before Adam was OF EARTH) Adam was (first of all) OF GOD!  It seems that God had been “waiting to exhale,” if you will, and, at that destined moment, God blew the very essence of Himself into a clay-case-construction that we know as a human body.  That is, God deposited the very essence of Himself, the LIFE OF GOD, into the lifeless dust of the earth.  No wonder Paul declared “we have this treasure [God’s Spirit] in earthen vessels.”  Nevertheless, man’s fall from grace, we have been unquestionably incomplete.  God’s Word and our life experiences reveal that (since birth) we have existed OUTSIDE-of-GOD, and we strive to reclaim our first estate, INSIDE-of-GOD. 

Allow me to me break it down like this: Anyone can hang AROUND God, or speak OF God, or offer praises TO God, or even preach ABOUT God, but no one can truly UNDERSTAND God or TRUST God or LOVE God…until one resides IN God!  And the Apostle John declares that we cannot experience the spiritual intimacy of AT-ONE-MENT WITH-THE-FATHER any other way than THROUGH THE ENTRY DOOR, JESUS CHRIST.  That’s what Jesus was getting at when he said, “I am the WAY, the truth and the life.”  In other words, I am the WAY TO GOD; I am the TRUTH ABOUT GOD; and, I am the LIFE OF GOD!  You simply CANNOT get to The FATHER, unless and until you (faith-fully) pass THROUGH THE PORTAL OF HIS SON!

Are you listening with your spirit?   God had you in mind long before Mom and Pop met and married!   Just in case you want to know who Wayne Manning Bass really is – I am NOT (exclusively) the son of Joseph Edison Bass and Mary Watts Bass.  In the ultimate sense, in the eternal sense, I am a son of GOD!  For long before my father, Joseph, or my mother, Mary, appeared on the scene of human history, GOD had already created and fellowshipped with Wayne in the halls of eternity!  If that is difficult for you to wrap your mind around, allow me to prove it in the Word.  God declared to Jeremiah:  “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.” (Jeremiah 1:5)  I KNEW YOU long before you were INSIDE your mother’s womb!  And the way I knew you before you were INSIDE your mother’s womb is simply this: Before you were at Mom’s side, you were at MY side!  You came THROUGH your mother, but you didn’t come FROM your mother!   Here’s a Rhema Word for someone: “STOP focusing on who your mother (or father) WAS or what he or she has DONE!”  Indeed, your parents were convenient to your destiny…but not absolutely necessary.  Your parents simply produced a TEMPORAL BODY for an ETERNAL SPIRIT that had already been with GOD.  Wow!

It is important that you understand this foundation fact because (when viewed in this manner), the facts and circumstances of your nativity become somewhat irrelevant or meaningless!   Let me lay a life-liberating truth on you: It doesn’t really matter HOW you CAME or WHERE you CAME FROM!  What matters is HOW you are COMING OUT!  Therefore, your birth status, your social situation, your heredity, your looks, your wealth, your health, (or lack thereof), are absolutely MEANINGLESS in the PLANS and PURPOSES of GOD!   Listen up sister…listen up brother…you are not a victim of your DNA.  You are much more than your genes, your looks, your lips, your textured hair, or your imperfect smile.  YOU are a SPIRITUAL BEING who only LIVES IN A BODY.  YOU are a CHILD OF GOD!  So WHOEVER you are…WHATEVER you are…HOWEVER you are…WHEREVER you are…YOU can “boldly approach the throne of grace.”  YOU are cordially invited TO COME TO THE FATHER…THROUGH THE SON!   FOR THERE IS LIFE…IN THE SON!

NEVER EVER FORGET: WHOEVER TAKES THE SON…GETS EVERYTHING!

Think seriously about this.  It is mission critical that we recognize, reverence and receive JESUS CHRIST, THE SOURCE OF ALL LIFE.  Why?  Because whoever takes THE SON…GETS EVERYTHING! 

I John 5:11-12

Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.  That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; but speaking the truth in love may GROW UP INTO HIM in all things, which is the head, even CHRIST.

What is the contemporary dilemma of the institutional church, in contrast with the predicament of those who fully embrace the standards of the world?  Consider this.  Most UN-believers are unfulfilled [they sustain lost and empty feelings] because, perhaps unknowingly, they long for the Christ-Word to be poured into their souls.  On the other hand, many believers also appear to be unfulfilled.  But in our case, it is not the empty feeling that is derived from being full of the world.  Ironically, it is a bloated feeling that we have; because, although we are full of the Word, we somehow fail to empty ourselves into this generation!  We are pregnant with divine purpose and destiny; but instead of giving birth, we go through an endless gestation period, and relatively few spiritual babies are being birthed!  That’s why WE BELIEVERS sometimes feel listless or restless and out-of-sorts!  Are you ready for this?

In the Garden of Eden, God came looking for Adam – not because God did not know where Adam was – but because ADAM did not know where ADAM was!  And what is our current state of affairs?  Today, a large number of men and women are LOST, both outside and inside the church!  When GOD cried out, “Adam, where art thou?”…He did not mean which BUSH are you hiding behind?  Quite the contrary.  He meant…there IS a PLACE BY ME that you once occupied…and now I am painfully aware that you have departed from MY PRESENCE.  And only in My Presence is there fullness of joy.  Only at My right hand are there pleasures forevermore!

After Satan launched his same primal temptations against THE SECOND ADAM, JESUS CHRIST, the Bible says “he [Satan] departed for a season,” which simply means he went away for a while, but he certainly came back.   He returned – to attempt again – to tempt again.  That old boy just won’t quit, will he?  Consider this: If Satan was bodacious enough to come again to tempt JESUS CHRIST, don’t you think (after the fall), that he came again to Adam in an attempt to tempt him again and to solidify his HOLD over him?  I can just imagine the KIND of things Satan must have been trying to speak into Adam’s life, even after his fall from grace:  “I told you God was lying!  He said the DAY that you eat of the tree you would die.  Yeah, you and Eve are lookin' pretty good for ‘dead folks!’  You’re 800-years-plus now – and you ain’t dead yet!  And if God lied about that, how can you believe what He says about anything else?   That old ungrateful Creator!  You and your old lady are working your fingers to the bone…pruning His trees…picking His fruit…work-work-work…that’s all you do…and do you mean to tell me that GOD-JUST-THREW-YOU-OUT…just like that?   After all you’ve done for God - you mean God dissed you…just like that?”

Ephesians 2:1 says: “And you has He quickened [made alive] who were dead in trespasses and sins.”  We were not physically present in our fore-parents’ day.  But when Adam fell, WE WERE VERY MUCH ALIVE - LIVING [INSIDE] THE FIRST ADAM.  Indeed, we were TRAPPED-IN-ADAM; and as such, we became partakers of his fallen nature.  That’s why the Bible says that MAN is born IN sin…not born TO sin…but born IN sin! (Psalm 51:5)  That is, when God told Adam “The day that you eat of the tree, you shall die,” God was simultaneously speaking to ALL FUTURE GENERATIONS THAT WERE LOCKED-UP-INSIDE-ADAM.  Yes, Adam, the day that you decide to eat of the tree…you ARE spiritually dead…but THANK GOD FOR CALVARY!  Thank God for THE BLOOD OF THE LAMB, without which there is absolutely NO remission of sin! (Matthew 26:28)  Do you know what THE CROSS OF CALVARY actually means?  Jesus Christ, the Anointed One, freed us from the curse that we were LIVING under (and DYING under).  And today, because of His shed blood, “IN HIM WE LIVE, and move, and have our being.” (Acts 17:28)  Henceforth, we are alive, liberated and we have become covenant “PARTAKERS OF THE DIVINE NATURE.” (II Peter 1:4)  You better believe it!   You and I are WINNER-BELIEVERS and our victory is assured!

LIFE IN THE SON (Part III)

It is mission critical to recognize, reverence and receive JESUS CHRIST, THE SOURCE OF ALL LIFE.  Why? Because whoever takes THE SON…GETS EVERYTHING! 

Prayerfully ponder the following scripture passages:

I John 5:11-12  

And this is the record…that GOD has given to us eternal life, and this life is in HIS SON.  He who has THE SON has life; and he who has not the Son of God has not life.

Ephesians 4:13-15

To enhance our understanding of our covenant connection with the person and work of Jesus Christ, let’s take a closer look at our fore-parent, ADAM.  First of all, please be reminded that GOD is never surprised by whatever GOD CREATES!  So God was not blindsided or shocked by Adam’s sin; and God is never surprised by our sins!  Believe it or not, God made Adam with full knowledge that Adam would eventually mess up! Because the intent-of-creation (what The Designer originally had in mind) was NOT the first Adam, but the second Adam, JESUS CHRIST!  Indeed, this is a mystery, but I contend that God created man with full and free will.  All will agree with that; some may disagree with this: In God’s permissive will, He allowed man to descend down the ladder-of-sin, which gave GOD a reason to become like MAN, so that MAN could have a season to become like GOD!   Ponder this prayerfully.  God was neither shocked nor surprised by Adam’s sin.

On the 6th day of creation, all the stuff-of-the-universe was complete.  And God said, “That’s good!”  However, there was nothing in creation that LOOKED LIKE GOD!  Let me explain this way.  As much as you love and emotionally connect with your pet, you are not actually the same being as your Lassie or your Rex!  Therefore, as close as you are to Fido, in the final analysis (relationship-wise), your pet cannot provide ALL of the emotional fulfillment that might be attained in a relationship with another human being.  No matter how intelligent your cat seems to be, you can never derive full conversation!  Admittedly, you can talk to Caesar, but however you interpret his purring and mewling, Caesar is incapable of full communication with you.  Your pet might sense your emotional state, but s/he cannot completely commiserate with you, simply because s/he cannot understand the details or nuances of your darkest hour.  Ultimately, you will need something more human (someone more like you) with which to connect and commune!  [Editor’s Note to Pet Owners: Please understand the ‘spirit’ of my discourse because I know that you truly ADORE your pets!]

Since all truth is parallel, first I have presented natural truth; now we may more readily discern spiritual truth.  On the 6th day of creation, notwithstanding the infinite variety of flora and fauna that were present in the universe, THE CREATOR needed something more!  I submit to you that GOD created US out of a similar mindset and affection that we experience emotionally at the birth of our children.  Mothers and fathers, we know those feelings quite well.  There is an indescribable pride and joy in your first gaze upon the face of baby Brian or cuddly Cindy.  Indeed, you see SOMETHING-OF-YOURSELF laying in that bassinet.

SO ON THE SIXTH DAY, GOD BREATHED SOMETHING OF HIMSELF INTO ADAM.  Think about that.  It is a both a natural and spiritual truism that you cannot place your lips on something without that something becoming part of you, and without you becoming part of that something.  Now hear this: Be careful who you kiss!

On a more serious note, despite the fact that Adam was created from dust and brought to life by the very breath or PNEUMA of God, he soon fell from God’s grace, headlong into sin and shame.  And GOD had to provide an efficacious remedy because man could not possibly save himself.  To wit, the gospel of John records the miracle of KENOSIS, i.e. that God poured out of Himself, THE ETERNAL WORD, into JESUS CHRIST, WHO IS THE LIVING WORD. (John 1:14)  That’s what I call PHASE ONE of the salvation plan.  In PHASE TWO, Jesus embraces a precarious and substitutionary death on our behalves, and as recorded in John 20:22, Jesus “BREATHED on them [us], and said unto them [us], Receive the Holy Spirit.”  That is, Jesus Christ pours out HIMSELF, THE LOGOS (the Living Word) into US, and we are thus baptized into the BODY OF CHRIST.  In PHASE THREE, which is “The Great Commission,” recorded in Matthew 28:19-20, CHRIST declares our strong obligation (after we receive JESUS CHRIST, THE LIVING WORD) to pour out a deposit of ourselves (i.e., CHRIST IN US, “the hope of glory”) into unbelievers everywhere. (Colossians 1:27)
