FINISH STRONG

FINISH STRONG

As our world experiences the closing moments of 2014, we corporately embrace and enact a meaningful metaphor for this wondrous journey called LIFE.  In the wise words of King Solomon, “Better is THE END OF A THING than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.” (Ecclesiastes 7:8)  This sage axiom is mission critical to achieving positive results as we trek through the unknown territory of 2015.  Finishing strong, i.e. succeeding in every arena of life, requires VISION, PATIENCE and PERSPECTIVE.

According to Dictionary.com, VISION is defined as “a vivid imaginative conception” (or) “the act or power of anticipating that which will or may come to be.”  To be sure, what we SEE is a determining factor of what we will BE and, by extension, what we will DO.  Solomon declared, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” (Proverbs 29:18)  As we navigate through 2015 with the help and direction of the Lord, extraordinary vision will be required.  That is, we must look beyond any unexpected situations, temporary circumstances, or occasional barriers in this coming year in order to visualize and actualize our God-ordained purpose and destiny.

Dictionary.com tells us that PATIENCE is the “ability or willingness to suppress restlessness or annoyance when confronted with delay” (or) “the bearing of provocation, misfortune, or pain, without complaint” (or) “quiet, steady perseverance.”  Key Questions: Which mountains are you now positioned to scale?  What barriers are you prepared to handle?  What delays are you determined to ignore…in order to achieve your life-dream?

Finishing strong in every God-given task necessitates PERSPECTIVE, which according to Dictionary.com is “a visible scene extending to a distance” (0r) “the state of one’s ideas, the facts known to one in meaningful relationship.”  Therefore, perspective is the first cousin of vision.  It sees the future, but does so in a very practical and proactive manner.  That is, perspective allows us to objectively visualize the key connections between our past, present and future.  When the Apostle Paul spoke of “forgetting those things which are behind,” he did so in the context of a personal recognition that 1) “I count not myself to have apprehended,” 2) I am “reaching forth unto those things which are before,” and 3) “I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:12-14)

Remember this.  Past is prologue to present.  As such, your past is not your enemy; neither is your present, no matter what either one looks like or feels like to you.  Both offer significant insights that will ultimately birth and develop the vision, preparation and realization of your future.

When God created us, He foreordained our future out of a clear foreknowledge of our character and calling.  That is to say, God ended us in the same moment that He started us.  As such, we believers are elected “according to the foreknowledge of God.” (I Peter 1:2)  Therefore, we can be “confident of this very thing, that he who has begun a good work in [us] will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 1:6)  There can be no doubt.  There IS no doubt.  We will finish strong!

How so?  How can we be filled with faith and confidence about FINISHING STRONG – today and always – especially in the presence of challenging problems and setbacks?  In a word, we must capture and cling to these indispensable prerequisites: Covenant Faith.  Unshakable Focus.  Unceasing Prayer.  Word Knowledge.  Eagle-Eye Vision.  Enduring Patience.  Spiritual Perspective.  Life Consistency.  And, don’t forget this one…Tenacity

You can do it!  You WILL do it!  In the coming year, my intercessory prayer is that your life, your health, your family, your ministry, your career and every single person that you touch will be highly favored and immeasurably blessed!

IF YOU EVER FEEL LIKE GOD HAS FAILED...

IF YOU EVER FEEL LIKE GOD HAS FAILED…

A prolific Christian author, Max Lucado, penned a powerful illustration in his insightful book entitled “A Gentle Thunder: Hearing God Through the Storm.”  It goes something like this…

Once there was a man who dared God to speak.
“God, burn the bush like you did for Moses and I will follow.
God, collapse the walls like you did for Joshua and I will fight.
God, still the waves like you did on Galilee and I will listen.”

And so the man went and sat by a bush, near a wall, close to the sea; and he waited for God to speak.
And God heard the man; so God answered.
He sent fire, not for the bush, but for a church.
He brought down a wall, not of brick, but of sin.
He stilled a storm, not of the sea, but of a soul.

And God waited for the man to respond.
And he waited…
And waited…
And waited…

But because the man was looking at bushes, not hearts; bricks, not lives; seas and not souls, he decided that God had done nothing.

Finally he looked at God and asked, “Have you lost your power?”
And God looked at him and said, “Have you lost your hearing?”

Our prayer today is the echo of a familiar praise chorus: “Open the eyes of my heart, Lord, I want to see You.”

HOW DO YOU SEE LIFE?

HOW DO YOU SEE LIFE?

While simply reading the newspaper or watching the news on television, it is relatively easy to sink into a state of emotional pessimism.  After all, our world seems to be fraught with tragedy upon tragedy.  Nevertheless, how one sees and engages the world makes all the difference…both today and tomorrow.  Consider the following true story.
In order to better understand people’s views of the world, a researcher placed two children, one a pessimist and the other an optimist, alone in separate rooms.
The pessimist was placed in a colorful room full of all kinds of imaginative toys…the optimist was put in a room filled with horse manure.
The first child played in the room for a little while, but soon came to the door asking to leave because the toys were boring and because they broke too easily.
Likewise, the young optimist soon came to the door…but rather than asking to leave, she asked for a shovel.
Of course, the researcher asked the child why she wanted a shovel.
She replied, “With all this manure around, I know that there must be a pony in here somewhere.”
Bottom-line:  Are you an optimist or a pessimist?  If there are lemons in your life (and all of us have them), why not decide to embrace the positive and proactive decision to make lemonade?  That is the very essence of FAITH.  To be sure, FAITH forms a consistently optimistic perspective, i.e. the firm assurance that GOD is in control and ultimately will not allow us to fail.
Jeremiah 29:11 (NKJV)
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.

APPEARANCES NOTWITHSTANDING...YOU HAVE ALREADY WON!

APPEARANCES NOTWITHSTANDING…YOU HAVE ALREADY WON!

Read it; decree it; believe it; practice it; receive it!

Ephesians 1:3-13(KJV)
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:
According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:
Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.
In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence;
Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:
10 That in the dispensation of the fullness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:
11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:
12 That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.

Ephesians 2:1-10 (KJV)
And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved);
And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast.
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT THAT NAME! (Part IV)

THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT THAT NAME! (Part IV)

TO ALL MY FACEBOOK SISTERS AND BROTHERS…I WISH YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS!

JESUS CHRIST is the SON OF GOD, which is to say He is EMMANUEL, God with us. (Galatians 2:20 – Matthew 1:23)  As our Savior, Jesus declares “I HAVE OVERCOME THE WORLD.” (John 16:33)  His capacity to overcome establishes our ability (as born again believers) to conquer any trials and temptations imposed upon us by Satan and this world system.  The Son of God became a man to enable men to become the sons of God.  Although the name, JESUS CHRIST, is the name that is above every other name, HE carries the spiritual authority of diverse names and titles, each of which grants specific powers and enablements to believing disciples who reside IN CHRIST.  Today, I will focus on several names, some better known than others.

Jesus Christ is “SHILOH.”  This name means “peace maker” and it is closely related to a name that the prophet Isaiah proclaims, “Prince of Peace.” (Genesis 49:10 and Isaiah 9:6)  According to the Apostle Paul, WE who “were far off [from God] are made nigh by the blood of Christ.  For HE IS OUR PEACE, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us.” (Ephesians 2:13-14)  Miraculously, his crucifixion caused the veil of the temple to be torn in two from top to bottom, signifying a divine act of salvation for who would receive Christ.  This tearing of the veil is symbolic of the fulfillment of the law and the actualization of a new covenant, i.e. our spiritual AT-ONE-MENT with the Father.

Jesus Christ is “THE ENSIGN OF THE PEOPLE.” (Isaiah 11:10)  The original meaning of this word, “ensign,” refers to a national flag which typically becomes a rallying point for loyal countrymen.  In effect, the ensign is both a symbol of citizenship and of fidelity to a particular nation.  Hence, the name of JESUS CHRIST is the ENSIGN (or BANNER) of our salvation and citizenship in the Kingdom of God.  We bow before Him; we honor and adore His name; we pledge loyalty and allegiance to Him.  Perhaps, King Solomon articulated it best: “He brought me to the banqueting house, and HIS BANNER OVER ME WAS LOVE.” (Song of Solomon 2:4)  This scripture represents a joyful anticipation of the MARRIAGE SUPPER OF THE LAMB, the future heavenly celebration of the union of the BRIDE (the Church) with the BRIDEGROOM, Jesus Christ. (Revelation 19:8-9)

Jesus Christ is our “PROPITIATION.” (I John 2:2 and I John 4:10-11)  This title of Christ calls to mind the Old Testament mercy seat, which sat atop the Ark of the Covenant within the Holy of Holies.  It means that Jesus Christ, as our Passover Lamb, satisfies all the righteous demands of God.  Sin results in separation from God and eternal death. (I Corinthians 5:7 – Isaiah 59:2 – Romans 6:23)  Jesus secures our salvation by standing as our legal substitute and becoming the propitiation for our sins.  “He was wounded for OUR TRANSGRESSIONS, he was bruised for OUR INIQUITIES: the chastisement of OUR PEACE was upon him; and with his stripes WE ARE HEALED.  All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and THE LORD HATH LAID ON HIM THE INIQUITY OF US ALL.” (Isaiah 53:5-7)

Jesus Christ is our “DOOR.” (John 10:9)  Jesus portrays himself as the only means by which sheep may enter into the sheepfold, their safety zone for shelter, sustenance and security.  Since “the Lord is [our] shepherd,” and we are “the sheep of his pasture,” HE is the sole avenue by which we may attain salvation. (Psalm 23:1 – Psalm 100:3)  According to the teachings of Jesus (John 10:9), by simply entering through this door, the sheep are “saved.”  Also, sheep are given liberty to “go in and out.”  That is to say, sheep ‘enter’ for salvation and ‘exit’ for service.  Furthermore, sheep find “pasture” or spiritual food via the daily provision of The Good Shepherd.  On a practical level, Christ affirms continual blessing for His Church: “Behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it.” (Revelation 3:8)  Therefore, victorious believers are not dependent upon the benevolence of any situation, group, government, or even employment.  GOD IS OUR SOURCE. JESUS CHRIST IS THE OPEN DOOR to all that Heaven affords.  No man can shut it!

Phenomenally, there are over 700 names and titles that the scriptures apply to our Lord and Savior.  As the incarnation of God the Father, Jesus Christ is revealed (even in the Old Testament) with strong covenantal connections to those who believe.  He is “ADONAI,” The Lord God. (Genesis 15:2)  He is “JEHOVAH BARA,” The Lord Creator. (Isaiah 40:28)  He is “JEHOVAH ELI,” The Lord My God. (Psalm 18:2)  He is “JEHOVAH ELYON,” The Lord Most High. (Psalm 38:2)  He is “JEHOVAH GANAN,” The Lord Our Defense. (Psalm 89:18)  He is “JEHOVAH IZOZ HAKABOTH,” The Lord Strong and Mighty. (Psalm 24:8)

He is “JEHOVAH JIREH,” The Lord Will Provide. (Genesis 22:14)  He is “JEHOVAH KABODHI,” The Lord My Glory. (Psalm 3:3)  He is “JEHOVAH MACHSI,” The Lord My Refuge. (Psalm 91:9)  He is “JEHOVAH MAGEN,” The Lord My Shield. (Deuteronomy 33:29)  He is “JEHOVAH MAOZ,” The Lord My Fortress. (Jeremiah 16:19)  He is “JEHOVAH HAMALECH,” The Lord King Forever. (Psalm 98:6)  He is “JEHOVAH MEPHALTI,” The Lord My Deliverer. (Psalm 18:2)  He is “JEHOVAH MGADDISHCEM,” The Lord Our Sanctifier. (Exodus 31:13)  He is “JEHOVAH MISQABBI,” The Lord My High Tower. (Psalm 18:2)  He is “JEHOVAH NISSI,” The Lord Our Banner. (Exodus 17:15)  He is “JEHOVAH ORI,” The Lord My Light. (Psalm 27:1)  He is “JEHOVAH RAPHA,” The Lord My Healer. (Exodus 15:26)  He is “JEHOVAH ROHI,” The Lord My Shepherd. (Psalm 23:1)  He is “JEHOVAH SABAOTH,” The Lord of Hosts. (I Samuel 1:3)  He is “JEHOVAH SELI,” The Lord My Rock. (Psalm 18:2)  He is “JEHOVAH SHALOM,” The Lord Our Peace. (Judges 6:24)  He is “JEHOVAH SHAMMAH,” The Lord Is There. (Ezekiel 48:35)  He is “JEHOVAH TISKENU,” The Lord Our Righteousness. (Jeremiah 23:6)  He is “JEHOVAH TSORI,” The Lord My Strength. (Psalm 19:14)  He is “JEHOVAH YASHA,” The Lord Thy Savior and Redeemer. (Isaiah 49:26 and Isaiah 60:16)

HALLELUJAH…WHAT A SAVIOR!

Beyond any shadow of doubt, JESUS PAID IT ALL.

Philippians 2:8-10
8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him A NAME WHICH IS ABOVE EVERY NAME:
10 THAT AT THE NAME OF JESUS EVERY KNEE SHOULD BOW, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT THAT NAME! (Part III)

THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT THAT NAME! (Part III)

JESUS CHRIST is the SON OF GOD, which is to say He is EMMANUEL or God with us. (Galatians 2:20 – Matthew 1:23)  But we must never forget that Jesus Christ is also the “SON OF MAN.” (Matthew 8:20)  I am ecstatic about that!  As MARY’S BABY, he personified and shared every physical limitation that characterizes fallen humanity.  Therefore, Jesus would have experienced our sicknesses and our pains; Jesus would have encountered our problems and our pressures.  Such human experiences authenticate and position him as a compassionate high priest. “We have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities.” (Hebrews 4:15a)

Herein we are able to observe the primary difference between Jesus and any other human being ever born into this world.  Jesus Christ “was IN ALL POINTS TEMPTED like as we are, YET WITHOUT SIN.” (Hebrews 4:15b)  I love the victorious testimony of Jesus: “I HAVE OVERCOME THE WORLD.” (John 16:33)  His capacity to overcome (while living on earth) clearly establishes and enables our ability (as born again believers) to conquer trials and temptations that are imposed upon us by this world system.  “YE ARE OF GOD, little children, and HAVE OVERCOME THEM: because GREATER IS HE THAT IS IN YOU, than he that is in the world.” (I John 4:4)  What a powerful promise!  What a gracious privilege! What a marvelous possession!

Today, we focus on the status of Jesus Christ as the SON OF GOD.  The expression, “Son of God,” means that Jesus is the personification and incarnation of God, Himself.  Prayerfully consider the following passage of scripture:

John 14:6-11
6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
7 If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.
8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, show us the Father, and it sufficeth us.
9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? HE THAT HATH SEEN ME HATH SEEN THE FATHER; and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father?
10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? The words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.
11 BELIEVE ME THAT I AM IN THE FATHER, AND THE FATHER IN ME: or else believe me for the very works' sake.

Thus, the Word reveals that Jesus Christ is co-equal and co-eternal with the Father. (Hebrews 1:1-3 – John 1:1-3)  The concept of the Trinity is a great mystery, but it is clearly made manifest at the baptism of Jesus. (Matthew 3:13-17)  It can be more readily understood if we consider the nature of something totally familiar to all of us: WATER.  Water presents itself in three forms: LIQUID (drinking water), SOLID (frozen water), and GAS (steam or vaporized water).  All three forms of water have precisely the same chemical composition: H2O.  Two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen are necessary to have water.  This holds true, no matter what FORM water takes.  However, each of these three forms of water (liquid, solid, gas) has a distinct function.  We DRINK the liquid; we are COOLED by the solid; and objects are PURIFIED by the gas or ‘steam’ form of water, e.g. a hospital autoclave which is used to purify reusable medical equipment.

Deuteronomy 6:4 records the foundational scripture of Judaism, which is commonly called the SHEMA: “Hear, O Israel, The Lord our God is one Lord.”  The meaning is crystal clear. There is but ONE TRUE AND LIVING GOD.  There is but ONE ETERNAL SPIRIT who may be substantively identified and worshiped as GOD.  The New Testament extends this revelation of the nature and character of God, informing us that the ONE GOD assumes THREE DISTINCT PERSONALITIES in order to communicate and commune with humankind: God, the Father…God, the Son…God, the Holy Spirit. ONE GOD…THREE DISTINCT REVELATIONS AND MANIFESTATIONS of His infinite love and grace toward us.  Think about it.  Liquid is water.  Ice is water.  Steam is water.  That is, they are one and the same substance in three distinct forms.  Likewise, the doctrine of the Trinity reveals one and the same God, manifested to mankind in three distinct forms or personalities.

Therefore, when we refer to Jesus Christ as the Son of God, we are not implying that he is inferior to (or less than) God, the Father.  They are ONE IN SUBSTANCE; they are ONE IN POWER; they are ONE IN AGREEMENT; and yes, they are ONE IN BEING.  Indeed, it is a mystery; nevertheless, it is divine truth.  Even as a twelve year old boy, Jesus fully understood that he was the Son of God and must be about his Father’s Kingdom business.  This truth was reaffirmed at his baptism. (Matthew 3:13-17)  In his subsequent 40-day fast and temptation in the wilderness, it was obvious that Satan (a.k.a. Lucifer, a former resident of Heaven) recognized him immediately as the SON OF GOD.  The Word declares that “the devils also believe, and tremble.” (James 2:19)  During his passion, Jesus was interrogated and implicitly identified by the high priest: “I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell me whether thou be the Christ, the SON OF GOD.” (Matthew 26:63)  Later, an unbelieving Roman centurion standing at the foot of his cross felt compelled to proclaim, “Truly this was the SON OF GOD.” (Matthew 27:54)  JESUS CHRIST IS THE SON OF GOD.  As has often been stated, ‘The Son of God became a man to enable men to become the sons of God.’ (Philippians 2:5-8 – I John 3:2)

Stay tuned…more to come tomorrow!

THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT THAT NAME! (Part II)

THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT THAT NAME! (Part II)

The Bible records over 700 names and titles for our Lord.  However, none is more glorious than Jesus.  The sound of that name is music to our ears, for at all times and in all circumstances, we may confidently lean upon the power and authority that is resident in the name of Jesus.  That name, Jesus, is closely related to the name, Joshua.  Its literal meaning is “Jehovah, the Savior,” or simply “saved.”  Even a superficial examination of the New Testament reveals the importance and power of that name.  By far, it is the name most often used in the gospels.  Even in the book of Acts, which uses the title “Lord” quite often, the name “Jesus” is used three times as much.

It is fascinating to note that during the earthly life of Jesus, he was seldom referred to (directly) by his given name.  With the exception of the thief on the cross who cried “JESUS…Lord, remember me,” there is no record of anyone ever addressing him by the name, “Jesus,” during the course of his public ministry. (Luke 23:42)  Instead, they called him “rabbi” or “Rabboni” or “master” or “teacher.” (John 1:49 – John 20:16 – Mark 11:21 – John 3:2)  He was also known as the “son of David,” “son of man,” or “Son of God.”  Some referred to him as “Christ,” the anointed one.  But once the angel Gabriel named Him, nobody (other than a thief hanging adjacent to his cross), addressed Him directly as “Jesus.”  This fact, alone, makes me realize how good God is to US.  What a privilege and honor it is for you and me to have the ability and authority to call him (anywhere and anytime) by the wonderful and wonder-working name of JESUS!

When his earthly father, Joseph, learned that his son’s name would be “Jesus,” he was also informed of the nature of his life’s work: “He shall save his people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:21)  Initially, it was believed that the salvation Jesus wrought would be the exclusive property of the Jewish people.  However, God demonstrated to the Apostle Peter (via a vision) that Jesus Christ is the universal savior.  That is, he can save anybody, anyplace, anytime.  For in Christ there is no East or West…no rich or poor…no brown or yellow…no black or white…no Jew or Gentile.  The compassionate Christ calls “whosoever will” for free and full access to the “water of life.” (Revelation 22:17)

Bottom-line: the only name by which humankind may attain salvation and at-one-ment with the Father is Jesus Christ. (John 14:6 – Acts 4:12)  In our age, it has become politically correct to envision many alternative pathways to God.  But the Word of God directly contradicts this mindset: “There is a way that seems right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.”  We should pay special attention to this scripture because it is twice repeated (verbatim) in the Word of God. (Proverbs 14:12 and Proverbs 16:25)  No other name (nor no other person) can save us. There’s something about that name…JESUS!

Jesus Christ is the Logos, the Living Word of God. (John 1:1-2)  As the incarnation of God, he is both the fullness of the Godhead and the human embodiment of the promised Word of redemption. (Colossians 2:8-10 – John 1:14)  As such, Jesus Christ is “Emmanuel,” which literally means “God with us.” (Matthew 1:23)  The cross of Calvary is the vehicle by which the Son sheds his atoning blood and reconciles fallen humanity back to the Father. (John 3:16 – Colossians 1:18-22 – Hebrews 9:22)  As we achieve RE-UNION with the Father through the Son (“God in Christ”), we become part of the “Body of Christ” and thereafter we function as productive branches of “The True Vine.” (II Corinthians 5:19 – I Corinthians 12:27 – John 15:1-3)  From that point onward, we are positioned by Christ as fruit-bearing branches, which he constantly purges, by His grace and for His glory.  The divine intention is to bring forth “more fruit,” and indeed “much fruit,” that will forever “remain” and flourish in the Kingdom of God. (John 15:2;8;16)

By the power and authority that resides in the name of Jesus, believers become disciples, i.e. soul-winners-par-excellence who reproduce themselves and thereby replicate His Kingdom. (Matthew 28:19-20 – Acts 1:8)  Through our ministry efforts, always empowered by His name, Kingdom and covenant are established through0ut the earth.  What a signal honor this is for us!  What an awesome privilege!  How blessed we are to be in partnership with God!  We are stewards of the Word, the very mysteries of God. (I Corinthians 4:1-2)

The singular requirement for our shared covenant of stewardship is FIDELITY.  As we perform our various and sundry assignments within the Kingdom of God, we must always be found FAITHFUL.  Remember this.  No God-given task is insignificant or inconsequential.  What we do TODAY…will echo throughout ETERNITY.  This is of such vital importance that it bears repeating: WHAT WE DO TODAY…WILL ECHO THROUGHOUT ETERNITY.

How so? Carefully consider this. “CHRIST in YOU [is] the HOPE of GLORY.” (Colossians 1:26-27) CHRIST-IN-YOU not only assures your personal salvation and ultimate arrival in the eternal presence of God, CHRIST-IN-YOU is quite possibly THE ONLY HOPE for the redemption or restoration of those persons you know, whether family, friend, or foe.  Indeed, we are responsible and accountable for ‘SALTING’ and ‘LIGHTING’ those who exist within our sphere of influence. (Matthew 5:13-14)  So why not tell more people about our loving Lord and Savior?  Why not become a NAME-DROPPER?  Tell the world about JESUS…tell them about his love.

Stay tuned…more to come tomorrow!

THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT THAT NAME! (Part I)

THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT THAT NAME! (Part I)

Scattered throughout the biblical record, there are more than 700 names and titles that apply to our Lord and Savior.  However, there is no single name or title that is more sacred, more venerable, more grand, or more glorious than the name of JESUS!  I love one particular worship chorus that magnifies and exalts His name.  If you can, sing along with me:

Jesus...Jesus…Jesus…there is something about that name.  Master…Savior…Jesus…like the fragrance after the rain.  Jesus…Jesus…Jesus…let all Heaven and earth proclaim.  Kings and kingdoms will all pass away, but there’s something about that name!”

The very sound of that name, Jesus, is music in the ears of believers throughout the world and throughout all ages.  In our darkest hours, whenever we encounter danger, or even death, we are supremely confident that we can lean upon the power and authority that is resident in the name of Jesus.  When we pray, when we preach, when we testify, when we witness…we could leave out any other name…but there is something simply extraordinary and indispensable about the name of Jesus.  In the coming days, we will highlight key scriptural revelations concerning that Name-Above-All-Names.  But for today, I just feel like worshipping Him!

NOEL: THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE SEASON

NOEL: THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE SEASON

The French word “NOEL” is derived from the Latin root, “natalis,” which means BIRTHDAY.  When capitalized, it is synonymous with the angelic heralding of yuletide or CHRISTMAS.  This term came into popular usage when “The First Noel” was penned during the 18th century by an unknown English composer. Its joyous lyrics are perennially familiar to us.

The first Noel, the Angels did say
Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay;
In fields where they lay keeping their sheep
On a cold winter's night that was so deep.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel!

Nevertheless, as we reflect upon the contemporary celebration of Christmas, the central message of the miraculous Incarnation and birth of Jesus Christ is noticeably absent.

Our focus seems to be on the festivities, food, parties, gatherings with family and friends, or the exchanging of gifts.  The result is a time of tremendous emotional upheaval and widespread depression (even suicide) for many, especially those who lack sufficient resources to fulfill the more mundane and material expectations of the season.  The gospel of Jesus Christ becomes virtually sidelined by our cultural and customary traditions.  We believers silently ask ourselves: “Should this be?”

Another question is begged: “Is it logical (or even possible) to remove JESUS CHRIST from Christmas?”  I think not.  After all, HE is The One who voluntarily disrobed Himself of the eternal splendors of Heaven and entered into a fallen and finite world system that is dominated by our insidious quest for fortune, fame and power.  Jesus Christ, alone, is the Savior of our world.  The scriptures testify of His matchless and miraculous gift to humankind:

Psalm 40:6-8
6 Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required.
7 Then said I, LO, I COME: IN THE VOLUME OF THE BOOK IT IS WRITTEN OF ME,
8 I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.

Isaiah 9:6
FOR UNTO US A CHILD IS BORN, UNTO US A SON IS GIVEN: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Matthew 1:21
And she shall bring forth a son, and THOU SHALT CALL HIS NAME JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
John 1:11-12
11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
12 But as many as received him, TO THEM GAVE HE POWER TO BECOME THE SONS OF GOD, even to them that believe on his name:

Because of the victorious life, vicarious suffering and vital atonement of Jesus Christ, we are free forever from the power, practice, penalty and guilt of sin.  Hallelujah…what a Savior!

Romans 8:1-4
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
2 FOR THE LAW OF THE SPIRIT OF LIFE IN CHRIST JESUS HATH MADE ME FREE FROM THE LAW OF SIN AND DEATH.
3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Bottom-line: JESUS PAID IT ALL!  So in this season (and always) we thank you, JESUS, for your timely birth, your sinless life, your substitutionary death, your victorious resurrection and your marvelous legacy of spiritual power, life and peace that is eternally bequeathed to us.  We pledge to remember the real reason for this season and we collectively celebrate OUR GREATEST GIFT with unbounded joy.

ONE NEVER KNOWS

ONE NEVER KNOWS

If any among you are tempted to feel sad or depressed during this Christmas season due to a lack of adequate resources or the absence or loss of a loved one, you must read and share the following story written by an unknown author.  It will surely inspire and bless you.

A pastor and his wife were given their first assignment, to reopen a church in Brooklyn, New York.  They arrived in early October, thrilled beyond measure to be entering an exciting ministry opportunity.  However, as they entered the church, their enthusiasm faded as they found the building to be run down and in dire need of restoration and repairs.  But right then and there, they set a goal to have all the necessary work done in time to have their first worship service on Christmas Eve.

They worked diligently, repairing pews, plastering walls, painting, etc., and on December 18th they were well ahead of schedule, just about finished.  Nevertheless, on December 19th a stormy tempest hit the area and lasted for two full days.

On the 21st of December, the pastor went over to inspect the edifice.  His heart sunk immediately when he saw that the roof had leaked, causing a large area of plaster to fall off the front wall of the sanctuary, just behind the pulpit.  The pastor swept up the mess on the floor, and not knowing what else to do, he headed homeward, planning to postpone their first service.   On the way home he noticed a local business sponsoring a flea market for charity, so he decided to stop by.

One of the items on sale was a beautiful, hand-made, ivory colored, crochet table cloth. It was truly an exquisite work of art, with striking colors and an ornate cross embroidered at the center.  The new pastor thought, ‘It is just the right size to cover up the hole in the front wall of the sanctuary!’  So he bought it and quickly headed back to church.

By this time it had started to snow.  An older woman hurried from the opposite direction, trying to catch a passing bus, but she missed it.  The pastor invited her to wait inside the warm sanctuary for the next bus, which was due to arrive 45 minutes later.  The grateful woman sat in a pew and paid little attention to the pastor while he gathered a ladder and wall hangers to mount the gorgeous tablecloth as a church tapestry.  The pastor could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and how perfectly it covered the entire problem area.  Just then, he noticed the woman walking slowly down the center aisle, wearing a shocked facial expression.
“Pastor,” she inquired, “Where…where…did you get that tablecloth?”

The pastor related the story of his recent purchase.  The woman asked him to check the lower right corner to see if the initials “EBG” were present there, and they were.  These were actually the initials of that woman, who had made the tablecloth 35 years previously while living in Austria.

The woman explained that before the war she and her husband were well-to-do people in Austria.  When the Nazis arrived, her husband sent her to safety, and planned to follow the next week.  Unfortunately, she was captured, detained in a camp, and never saw her husband or her home again.

The pastor offered to give her the tablecloth, but she insisted that he keep it for the church.  He said “Then I will drive you home; that is the least I can do.”  The woman lived on the other side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn for the day doing a housecleaning job.

Christmas Eve arrived, and what a wonderful service they had!  The church was practically full, and the Holy Spirit moved upon the hearts of all who attended.  At the close of the service, the pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door and many people promised to return often.

One older man, whom the pastor recognized from the neighborhood, continued to sit in one of the pews with a blank stare on his face, and the pastor wondered why he did not leave with all the rest.  The man asked, “Where did you get the tablecloth on the front wall? It is identical to one my wife made years ago when we lived in Austria before the war.  Could there be two tablecloths so much alike?”

He told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he forced his wife to flee for safety with plans to follow her, but then he was arrested and placed in a concentration camp.  He never saw his wife or his home again for all the 35 years in between.

The pastor smiled inwardly and asked the gentleman if he would accompany him on a ride.  They drove to Staten Island, to the same building where the pastor had taken the woman three days earlier.  He helped the elderly man climb three flights of stairs to the woman’s apartment, knocked on the door and saw the greatest Christmas reunion one could ever imagine!

What a miraculous story of the matchless grace and marvelous love of our God!  None of this heartwarming story would have been possible without the terrible storm and the resultant hole in the church sanctuary!  So often, our apparent 'storms' are divine appointments that ultimately bless us and others.

In truth, ONE NEVER KNOWS what GOD has in store.  So…please…do not surrender to doubt or despair.  It is my prayer that your Christmas will be endowed with the fullness of peace and joy that is the life and legacy of OUR SAVIOR, JESUS CHRIST, THE LORD.
