FEAR'S EDGES

FEAR’S EDGES

My goodness…time really does fly, or so it seems.  We are now in the last two months of 2017!  This season of the year reminds me of our varsity football experiences.  The late Coach Joe Gladys would give us Greyhounds a challenging pep talk before we re-entered the gridiron to commence the second half of competition.  While his talks were always different (based largely upon the scoreboard status), they contained one common theme: ‘What will we do to assure that we are operating at peak performance in the latter half of the game?’

In the waning moments of this year, it is imperative that we approach every day and task with courage and consistency.  We must refuse to live in the shadow of FEAR, which is a highly adept and lethal assassin of dreams and potential.  Consider the following story, courtesy of Scott Higgins.

Philip Island, in Victoria Australia, plays host to one of the greatest nature experiences possible.  On the shores of Philip Island are the burrows of thousands upon thousands of fairy penguins, extraordinarily cute little birds that are somewhat short in stature.  Every morning the adult penguins head out to sea to catch fish.  At the end of the day, they return to land to bring back food for their chicks.  Watching them moving from the water to their burrows is both funny and fascinating.  The penguins surf in on the waves, then gather in groups at the water’s edge.  Their burrows are roughly 300 feet away, with the open space of the sandy beach standing between the sea and their home turf.

Suddenly, a group of penguins takes off, waddling as fast as their little legs can carry them across the beach.  But then, having traveled only 25 feet or so, they turn around and then waddle back toward the water.  They wait, then try again.  As one group finally makes it, another performs this strange ritual of turning heading homeward and turning back.  On it goes until eventually all the penguins cross the beach and meet up with their hungry chicks in the burrows.

What’s really going on here?  Why this strange stop-start-and-return ritual?  The answer is quite simple.  At sea, the birds are fast swimmers and able to dive deep.  Therefore, at sea, they are safe from predators such as eagles and hawks.  Within their burrows, they are similarly safe since they are below ground.  But out on the open beach, they are quite vulnerable, completely exposed.  On the beach, they can only waddle slowly and are easy pickings for predators.  And so, as they cross over the beach sands, the moment that they see a shadow of anything, they turn back and race for the safety of the water.

Undoubtedly, we humans are a lot like fairy penguins. When confronted with challenging situations, we find ourselves standing uncertainly at the water’s edge. We know where we’ve got to go.  We know we’ve got to cross the ‘beach’ and head toward our ‘home’ – but the journey seems somehow daunting and terrifying.  You see, as we step out of the water and waddle across the beach, we leave our safety and comfort zone behind.  We find ourselves in ‘no-man’s land’ where it feels rather uncertain, dangerous and disconcerting. However, to arrive home, we must abandon our safety zone and strike out into THE FAITH ZONE, that dynamic intersection of human risk and divine reward.

My friend, it’s called LIFE.  Prayerfully consider this thought provoking question for the remaining days of 2017:  'Are you up to the challenge of abandoning your anxieties and fears to experience the power and potential of what lies ahead?'  It is my prayer that you will have a most fulfilling and fruitful remainder of this year.  No fear.  No hesitancy.  Only faith.

PROPITIATION

PROPITIATION

Jesus Christ is “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29) Hence, a key Messianic Title ascribed to Jesus reveals that He is “the Propitiation for sin.” (I John 2:2) This simply means that, on the Cross of Calvary, Christ bears the brunt for all of our sins.  To wit, He (who knew no sin) stands in our deserved place of judgment, freeing us forever from the power, penalty and continued practice of sin.

The biblical record reflects Ten Distinct Occasions/Actions in which The Lamb of God, our High Priest, takes away Sin: (Hebrews 4:15 – Revelation 5:12)

--Before the Foundation of the World (Revelation 13:8)
--At the Fall of Man (Genesis 3:21)
--At the Offering of a Sacrifice (Numbers 28:6)
--On the Day of Atonement (Leviticus 16:34)
--At a time of National Repentance (II Chronicles 7:14)
--During the Public Ministry of Jesus (John 1:29)
--On the Cross (I Peter 2:24)
--At Conversion (II Corinthians 5:17)
--At the Second Coming (Romans 8:18-23)
--At the end of the Millennial Reign of Christ (Rev. 20:12-15)

The Propitiation of Jesus Christ, The Anointed One, is a free and gracious gift that we receive by faith. (Ephesians 2:8) Thanks be to God, who removes our transgressions from us “as far as the east is from the west.” (Psalm 103:12) What a Mighty and Merciful God we serve!

TAKING RESPONSIBILITY

TAKING RESPONSIBILITY

A beloved Amish proverb should be our daily summons to practice personal compassion, integrity, responsibility and accountability.  It simply says, “Instead of putting others in their place, put yourself in their place.”

How easy it is to get caught up in the blame game!  Wouldn’t you agree?  However, finger-pointing is never a polite, comely, or healthy practice.  My Dad often reminded us: “Whenever you point your index finger to condemn others, there are three fingers pointing back at you and one pointing upward to God.”

Life experiences teach us that other people are indeed capable of causing pain, pressure, or problems.  Nevertheless, I want to share a practical solution, one that might at first glance seem cynical, but represents a more realistic response to the perceived offenses of others.  When you ‘feel’ a certain way about something that someone else has done, silently ask yourself this question: “SO WHAT?”  After all, when we net it all out, there are relatively few things people can do that will have a lifelong impact on us – unless WE allow it to be so.  Therefore, any decision to repeatedly rehearse the offenses of others, i.e. to hold tenaciously to anger, resentment, or an unforgiving spirit, is much more detrimental to ourselves than it is to others.

So why not take personal responsibility?  IT’S THE HEALTHY CHOICE.  Frequently, I pray to the Lord, asking Him to reveal my own flaws, errors, inconsistencies, or misperceptions.  Thus, I am enabled to SEE MYSELF more clearly and to move on with my life – while recognizing that someone else might have acted in a manner that is personally damaging or deceitful.

Bottom-line: My Savior and I will always decide on the tone and tenor of my day, never surrendering that authority to others.

This personal choice informs and instructs me.

This personal choice motivates and mobilizes me.

This personal choice favors and frees me to continue the marvelous journey which The Creator has designed – with personal purity, with passionate power and with authentic love.

Bottom-line: Each of us is responsible for our own attitudes and actions.  So, as we arrive at challenging moments or decision-points, we will wisely choose to pursue brotherhood, sisterhood, understanding and peace.  We will choose to walk a mile in the shoes of others.  We will choose to forgive.  We will choose to love.

WE AR UNDER DIVINE PROTECTION!

we are under divine protection!

No weapon formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue which rises against you in judgment you shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is from Me,” says the Lord. (Isaiah 54:17)

OUR GOD has once again demonstrated that HE, alone, is sovereign.

Earlier this week, an unrighteous perpetrator seized control of my personal Facebook page (“Wayne M. Bass”) and my devotional page (“The Daily Devotional of Pastor Wayne M. Bass”).  This person somehow managed to change my password, email address and telephone contact number – while eliminating the list of trusted family members who could vouch for the restoration of my accounts if any such action had occurred.

I went through extraordinary lengths to reverse the damage they had done, and to restore my pages.  This was extremely important because, if I had been unable to restore the pages, I would have lost access to thousands of Facebook friends and devotional readers in many nations.

However, GOD BE PRAISED, the restoration process was completed less than one hour ago.  Now, I decree that neither Satan, nor his allied agents, will be able to subvert or subtract from the ministry of inspiration and information that has been initiated by the Lord a few years ago.

So, I declare once again, with unwavering faith in the victory we share by virtue of our covenant connection with The Risen Christ:

No weapon formed against you [or me] shall prosper, and every tongue which rises against you in judgment you shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is from Me,” says the Lord. (Isaiah 54:17)

REQUIRED PERSISTENCE

REQUIRED PERSISTENCE

As Winner-Believers, we walk in total victory!  True enough, we are The Church Militant (in time), but we are also The Church Triumphant (in eternity).  So, despite any of our sensory perceptions, based on what we see, smell, taste, touch, or hear, believers are fully seated in spiritual authority and power with Jesus Christ!  “Greater is He” who resides within us, than he that is in the world. (I John 4:4)

Focus.  Persist.  Endure.  Overcome.  Celebrate!

SUPPORTING OUR SPIRITUAL SIBLINGS

SUPPORTING OUR SPIRITUAL SIBLINGS

An important spiritual mandate is recorded in the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Church of Galatia: “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” (Galatians 6:2)

Believers, never forget that we are the Body of Christ. (Romans 12:5) No part of Christ’s body may rightfully declare greater importance over people who some construe as ‘lesser’ parts.  Simply put, our God is “no respecter of persons.” (Acts 10:34) This means that ALL are of immeasurable significance to Him.

Therefore, it is incumbent upon us, as “heirs of God, and joint heirs with Christ,” to recognize that all persons we encounter (saints or sinners) have arrived on Earth with created promise and with divine potential to walk through life as beloved and blessed children God.  We should never be distracted by their present appearance or life circumstances.  God’s love is actualized and manifested via our unconditional concern and care.

To wit, the Word admonishes believers “that are strong” to lovingly support and “bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves.” (Romans 15:1) Jesus Christ sums it up this way: “By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you have LOVE one to another.” (John 10:35)

My friend, take a few moments today to support your spiritual siblings, as well as those who do not presently profess a covenant relationship with the Savior.  Someone is in desperate need of the gift that GOD has deposited in YOU.

ABIDING IN THE CENTER

ABIDING IN THE CENTER

The Center of God’s Will is the place of His power and provision.  Winner-Believers, in order to ratify our covenant relationships with Christ and to receive His promises, we must move (swiftly and deliberately) away from the periphery and stride (purposefully and faithfully) toward the center.

This simply involves an enduring declaration of “YES” to God’s plan and purpose.  For “all the promises of God in Him are YES, and in Him AMEN.” (II Corinthians 1:20) Winner-believer, just say “no” to every satanic influence and shout an everlasting “YES” to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

DON'T LET ANYTHING STAND IN YOUR WAY

DON’T LET ANYTHING STAND IN YOUR WAY

Yaniv Aviran is an author and inspirational speaker who lives in Haifa, Israel.  By the way, he struggles with a progressive and debilitating disease, muscular dystrophy.  Nevertheless, here’s how Yaniv sees life:

During my early childhood, I made the most important decision of my life.  I decided there was no reason that my disability, as difficult as it may have been, would prevent me from fulfilling all my dreams or stop me from being truly happy and successful.

Although I was placed in a special school, along with children who suffer from profound emotional and physical disabilities, I fought to break away from what others saw as my inevitable destiny, so I would excel in anything I chose to do, to enjoy my life like any other kid my age.

It wasn’t easy, yet I became victorious over time, proving to others (and myself) that there is no goal that I cannot achieve.  Over and over again, I overcame enormous obstacles and prejudices, with the understanding that there is no limit to the power of the human spirit.

Today, I am an owner of a successful business and I have a lot of true friends.  I live my life with optimism and joy; I travel around the world; and I coach people to fulfill their own wishes, under the motto that anything and everything is possible - if you truly believe in God and in yourself.

My advice to everyone who is struggling with situations beyond your control is simply this: Don’t let anything stand in your way.  Dare to dream.  Start with small and consistent steps.  All things are possible.

Thank you, Yaniv Aviran, for having the courage to SEE and BE your divine purpose and destiny.

In the words of the Apostle Paul, “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28)

PRAYER: THE MASTER KEY

PRAYER: THE MASTER KEY

One of my Facebook friends from South Africa, Lungani Goodman, recently posted the following quotations on the importance of sustaining a healthy prayer life.  They’re so powerful that all should prayerfully ponder.

“I would rather teach one man to pray than ten men to preach.” --Charles Spurgeon

“The man who mobilizes the Christian church to pray will make the greatest contribution to world evangelization in history.” --Andrew Murray

“We have to pray with our eyes on God, not on the difficulties.” --Oswald Chambers

“There is no other activity in life so important as that of prayer.  Every other activity depends upon prayer for its best efficiency.” --M.E. Andross

“He who runs from God in the morning will scarcely find Him the rest of the day.” --John Bunyan

“Prayer is not learned in a classroom but in the closet.” --E. M. Bounds

“We must begin to believe that God, in the mystery of prayer, has entrusted us with a force that can move the Heavenly world, and can bring its power down to earth.” --Andrew Murray

“Prayer is not asking.  Prayer is putting oneself in the hands of God, at His disposition, and listening to His voice in the depth of our hearts.” --Mother Teresa

“Relying on God has to begin all over again every day as if nothing had yet been done.” --C.S. Lewis

“The more you pray, the less you'll panic.  The more you worship, the less you worry.  You'll feel more patient and less pressured.” --Rick Warren

“I have so much to do that I shall spend the first three hours in prayer.” --Martin Luther

“Prayer does not fit us for the greater work; prayer is the greater work.” --Oswald Chambers

“He who kneels the most, stands the best.” –Dwight L. Moody

Thank you, Lungani Goodman, for sharing such important spiritual insights.

Bottom-line: Prayer is the currency of our covenant relationship with Christ.  Prayer connects and conditions us.  Prayer frees and focuses us.  Prayer refreshes and restores us.  Prayer secures and sustains us.  Prayer edifies and empowers us.  Unquestionably, prayer is mission critical to our spirituality, our sustainability and our suitability in advancing the Kingdom of God.

Finally, in the words of Jesus Christ: “men always ought to pray and not faint [lose heart].” (Matthew 18:1)

TEN REASONS WHY YOU CANNOT GIVE UP

TEN REASONS WHY YOU CANNOT GIVE UP

I read an interesting article by Seun Emmanuel Alaofin, a young writer and motivational speaker.  I deem it appropriate to share it with you: “Ten Reasons Why You Cannot Give Up.”

REASON 1:  You have already started.  There is no need in stopping halfway.  I am sure that stopping halfway will not bring back all the time you have invested toward achieving your goal.

REASON 2:  You are almost there.  Typically, problems don’t show up until you are almost there.  Remember, it is painful to NOT achieve something you knew that you could, something that is almost within reach.

REASON 3:  You are stronger than your current problems.  Your problems are not there to intimidate you, but to challenge you to get better and move higher.  Your current challenge that looks like your number one enemy is actually a friend in disguise, trying to bring out the best in you.

REASON 4:  You believed you could do it in the first place, which was why you started.  You believed you could achieve it, which was why you put all that effort into it.  Why have you now decided to betray the strong belief you had in yourself?

REASON 5:  Before now, you focused on the benefits at the finish line.  Don’t you still want them?

REASON 6:  Yesterday’s problems are today’s success stories.  You will be highly gratified in the future – telling everyone how you were able to prevail and succeed.

REASON 7:  The problem you are facing now will give you the experience you need to get to the next level.  People who learn from their problems are able to cope better during the next phase of life.

REASON 8:  Your problem and your promotion are directly proportional.  In other words, the bigger your problem is, the greater your promotion will be.  The more you run from your problem, the more you lower your promotion possibilities.  It's up to you to decide; be wise.

REASON 9:  Most likely, you were tired of your previous state of affairs, which was why you decided to try something different.  Are you willing to travel backwards, or are you determined to move ahead?

REASON 10:  You have a BIG GOD who is ready, willing and able to support you.  He knows the beginning and he knows the ending.  He created you to experience abundant life and He believes in you.  GOD has given you power and authority over everything – including yourself and including your problems – so you have no reason to allow problems to dominate or discourage you.

The late Joe Gladys, my high school football coach, had a penchant for sharing inspirational power phrases.  One of his favorites was “A winner never quits, and a quitter never wins!”  So when you are tempted to throw in the towel, always remember this: IT’S TOO SOON TO QUIT.  Hang in there because it’s not over…until GOD says it’s over!

Finally, here is what your Creator says about you: “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says  the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope." (Jeremiah 29:11) If GOD thinks you have the ability to prevail and prosper, surely you can, and surely you will!

BE READY FOR CHRIST'S RETURN...SOON

BE READY FOR CHRIST’S RETURN…SOON

The signs of the times are everywhere.  Although satanic forces are at work globally, far too many non-believers (and believers alike) have not yet come to grips with the fact that the return of Jesus Christ is near.  Today’s devotional is the unedited Word of God – speaking clearly concerning this climactic event in human history, and our need to prepare ourselves spiritually for the same.

John 14:1-3
“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.

II Timothy 3:1-5
But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!

Matthew 24:3-44
Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?” And Jesus answered and said to them: “Take heed that no one deceives you. For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many. And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of sorrows. “Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake. 10 And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. 11 Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. 12 And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But he who endures to the end shall be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come. 15 “Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place” (whoever reads, let him understand), 16 “then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17 Let him who is on the housetop not go down to take anything out of his house. 18 And let him who is in the field not go back to get his clothes. 19 But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! 20 And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. 22 And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened. 23 “Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There!’ do not believe it. 24 For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 25 See, I have told you beforehand. 26 “Therefore if they say to you, ‘Look, He is in the desert!’ do not go out; or ‘Look, He is in the inner rooms!’ do not believe it. 27 For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. 28 For wherever the carcass is, there the eagles will be gathered together. 29 “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30 Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. 32 “Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near.33 So you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near—at the doors! 34 Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away. 36 “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only. 37 But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. 38 For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, 39 and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. 40 Then two men will be in the field: one will be taken and the other left. 41 Two women will be grinding at the mill: one will be taken and the other left. 42 Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour[f]your Lord is coming. 43 But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. 44 Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

Revelation 22:12-17
12 “And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to everyone according to his work. 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last.” 14 Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city. 15 But outside are dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie. 16 “I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things in the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star.” 17 And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!” And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.

WE'RE BETTER TOGETHER

WE’RE BETTER TOGETHER

Before deciding you don’t need to live in harmony with others, carefully consider this.  A cord of rope has significantly greater aggregate strength than the singular strength of any specific strand of which it is composed.  How could this possibly be?  The answer is quite simple.  In nearly every case, the individual strands have weak spots – points at which they might easily bend and break.  But within a cord of rope, those weak spots are randomly distributed along its length and among its twists, allowing adjacent strands to literally cancel out any weak spots in the individual fibers.

First natural, then spiritual…

GOD has designed us to exist and operate much like a cord of rope.  That is, each one of us has a special strength and a point of weakness.  However, when we remain united together, our weaknesses are diminished and rendered inconsequential in the presence of others – and ultimately via our connection with the awesome power of God.  It’s a synergy thing.  1 + 1 spiritually equals 3!  So, stay connected.

OVERCOMING THE SPIRIT OF REJECTION (Part III)

OVERCOMING THE SPIRIT OF REJECTION (Part III)

This is the final installment of our devotional series on the spirit of rejection, so let’s recap what we have learned.  First, God graciously sows ‘pluses’ into our lives to offset the ‘minuses’ we experience through the carelessness or callousness of others.  It is mission-critical that we identify and cultivate those positive seeds.  Secondly, Satan leverages our feelings of inadequacy to negatively impact attitudes, actions and long-term potential.  Thirdly, whenever we harbor unresolved feelings of rejection, we trigger a tendency to become a rejecter of others, thereby diminishing our capacity to sustain healthy relationships.  Fourthly, to combat any feelings of inadequacy (rooted in rejection), we must avoid toxic people and relationships. Fifthly, we must diligently guard our hearts, that is, we must deploy God’s Word as a spiritual filter for our meditations and our mouths.

These insights lead us to Kingdom Principle Number Three: REJECTION IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO GAIN KNOWLEDGE, MOTIVATION AND THE ABILITY TO ACHIEVE SUCCESS.  To understand the power of this statement, we need only consider the life of JESUS CHRIST.  Indeed, He is THE MASTER of managing personal rejection.   Consider the following scripture:

John 1:10-12
10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and THE WORLD KNEW HIM NOT.
11 He came unto his own, and HIS OWN RECEIVED HIM NOT.
12 BUT AS MANY AS RECEIVED HIM, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

First, as the Architect of Creation, Jesus Christ was rejected by the very people whom he had created. (John 1:3 and Hebrews 11:3) Secondly, Jesus was rejected by “his own,” i.e. his Jewish brethren. (John 1:11) Thirdly, Jesus was marginalized by the religious establishment who sought to label him as “a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners.” (Luke 7:34) But herein lay the key to the unprecedented level of success that characterizes the person and work of Jesus Christ.  HE DID NOT FOCUS ON THE REJECTION OR THE REJECTERS!  Jesus did not worry about the lukewarm reception of family and friends who were somewhat offended by the spiritually authoritative words of their ‘homeboy.’ (Matthew 13:57)

In my mind’s eye, I picture Jesus simply shrugging off their negative attitudes and opinions: ‘Oh well,’ He likely mused, ‘a prophet is always without honor in his own country.’   Thereafter, Jesus made the wise decision to work with those who “RECEIVED Him,” which means JESUS MOVED ON!  His actions are our template for handling chronic rejection.  At least emotionally (if not physically), we must resolve to MOVE ON!  It reminds me of the call of Abram, in which GOD clearly commanded him: “Get out of your country, from your family and your father’s house, to a land that I will show you.” (Genesis 12:1) Our greatest success occurs wherever GOD positions and plants us!

Kingdom Principle Number Four: GOD MOVES YOU OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE TO BLESS AND POSITION YOU TO BLESS OTHERS. (Genesis 12:2) What you may now perceive as REJECTION is nothing more than an INTERMEDIARY STEP between your past and your future – between your human will and God’s perfect will – between your apparent failure and your appointed success.  Wow!

So live your life on purpose, my friend, with unmitigated faith, demonstrable courage and unshakable enthusiasm.  Never allow any person or circumstance to RAIN ON YOUR GOD-ORDAINED REIGN!  Your footsteps have been divinely ordered. (Psalm 37:23) So look up and think up!  Be focused and joyful!  That’s where your strength lies. (Nehemiah 8:10) I love Norman Vincent Peale’s perspective on this: “Life’s blows cannot break a person whose spirit is warmed at the fire of enthusiasm.”  If you persist in thinking positively about yourself and your future prospects, you will ultimately succeed. (Habakkuk 2:3) How so?  Simply put, YOU ARE A WINNER-BELIEVER!

Allow me to cite one practical example.  Early in life, I achieved substantial success in sales.  The secret underlying my accomplishments was simply this:  I LEARNED HOW TO PROPERLY INTERPRET REJECTION.  In other words, I discovered that every “NO” is a necessary step toward the person who would say “YES!” Therefore, I carefully monitored and managed my sales activity and discovered that approximately 70% of my appointments had APPARENTLY NEGATIVE OUTCOMES, which simply meant that those prospects did not purchase what I was selling.  So instead of feeling discouraged when someone said “NO,” I STRATEGICALLY COUNTED IT as one more appointment I had to process before arriving at my “YES!”  The Word of God confirms this principle:

James 1:2-4
2 My brethren, COUNT IT ALL JOY when ye fall into diverse temptations;
3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith works patience.
4 But LET PATIENCE HAVE HER PERFECT WORK, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

The philosophy of Ralph Waldo Emerson is also in total agreement.  He wrote, “Dear to us are those who love us, but dearer are THOSE WHO REJECT US AS UNWORTHY, for they add another life we had not dreamed of, supply to us new powers and urge us to new and unattempted performances.”

I frame Emerson’s perspective this way: EVERY NEGATIVE SITUATION IS PROLOGUE TO FUTURE SUCCESS.  So we will never despair about dark or dubious circumstances; we will never yield to doubt or discouragement. Rather, we will CELEBRATE every challenging circumstance and individual who, by the apparent act of PUTTING US DOWN, quite literally succeeds in RAISING US UP!

OVERCOMING THE SPIRIT OF REJECTION (Part II)

OVERCOMING THE SPIRIT OF REJECTION (Part II)

We have learned that Satan’s agenda is intensifying emotional struggles to produce long-term negative effects, while God’s agenda is transforming our situations and shortcomings into strengths and wisdom so we are positioned to assist others with similar life experiences.  To offset any perceived ‘minuses’ in our lives, God always grants unique and powerful ‘pluses’ for balance today and achievement tomorrow.  Personal discovery of these God-given pluses is mission critical to breaking out of the ‘rejection box’ and attaining forward progress and fulfillment.

Even when others do not seem to GET US, Satan does.  His tactical portfolios on people are works-in-progress from cradle to grave.  Therefore, he is historically aware of OUR EMOTIONAL BUTTONS, the best means of pushing them, and our probable response to such pressure.  I believe there are specific satanic forces, i.e. SPIRITS OF REJECTION, whose primary mission is PRODUCING REPEATED CYCLES OF SIMILAR SETBACKS via those who are closest and capable of causing serious pain and damage.  Often, these unwitting agents are our FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

Once you have identified your GOD-GIVEN PLUSES, it is imperative to use them proactively as weapons to nullify demonic attacks that are expressly formulated to reactivate any feelings of rejection.  As you recall, the ‘minus’ that shaped my personal self-image was a speech impediment.  My God-given ‘plus’ was academic achievement.  Whenever I felt LESS-THAN, I consciously reminded myself of my potential to excel in the classroom.  In other words, I might not be super at hoops, but I could be superlative in history!  YOU, too, have GOD-GIVEN PLUSES!  Find and focus on them whenever significant others become unknowing agents of lowering self-esteem and reviving feelings of rejection.  Please hear this with your spirit.  It is imperative that you do so, or you will have the potential to BECOME that which you now abhor.

Kingdom Principle Number Two: HARBORING UNRESOLVED FEELINGS OF REJECTION ULTIMATELY CAUSES YOU TO BECOME A REJECTER OF OTHERS.  A renowned American psychologist, Abraham Maslow, was convinced that childhood problems of self-esteem are far more serious than commonly believed.  He discovered that CHILDREN WHO FEEL REJECTED have low rates of “pro-social behavior” (difficulty with sharing), high rates of “disruptive behavior” (aggressiveness), high rates of “immature behavior” (impulsiveness and inattentiveness) and high rates of “social anxiety” (fears they may never fit in).  He believed that this basic lack of self-esteem, if unchecked, ultimately manifests as ADULT DEPRESSION.  In other words, our need for acceptance is so powerful that, if unfulfilled, we are motivated to act out the opposite of what we need.  That is, we eventually withdraw from the love and acceptance of significant others who are genuinely seeking our good.  Ironically, WE BECOME PASSIVE OR ACTIVE REJECTERS and eventually find it challenging to sustain healthy long-term relationships.

Having outlined the problem, what is THE SOLUTION?  First, since much of what we become is influenced by factors in our environment, WE MUST AVOID TOXIC PEOPLE AND RELATIONSHIPS.  Carefully consider this: Although most of us despise rejection, isn’t it ironic that we are somehow drawn to people who continually reject us?  How can this be?  Because HUMAN BEINGS ARE TYPICALLY DRAWN TO THE FAMILIAR – even if those customary people or things could be dangerous and disastrous for us.  Think about it.

At this stage in life, I have embraced a firm policy of ZERO TOLERANCE FOR CHRONIC NEGATIVITY, which means I refuse to maintain involvement with those who do not speak positively into my life and into the lives of others.  This is no easy task since it may require distance or disconnection from persons to whom I am naturally or emotionally inclined to walk closely.

Here’s why this is vitally important: WE TEND TO BECOME WHATEVER WE CONSTANTLY MEDITATE UPON OR ASSOCIATE WITH.  Therefore, our sense-gates MUST be guarded!  Association does bring about assimilation.  Solomon’s wise counsel is affirmation: “Keep your heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” (Proverbs 4:23) The alternative to guarding your heart, i.e. not constantly hearing, speaking, tasting, touching, or seeing anything that detracts from the image of God-in-you, is becoming a distorted and degraded version of your destined and truest self.  This powerful principle should have a direct impact on your daily intake.  Garbage in…garbage out!  WORD in…WORD out!  To facilitate your long-term health and wholeness, here one powerful scripture to live by:

“This Book of the Law [God’s Word] shall not depart from your mouth; but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it.  For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” (Joshua 1:8)

Bottom-line: When you make the decision to diligently guard your heart, you will restructure your relationships.  Are you ready?
