MOTHER, MAY I?

MOTHER, MAY I?

As young children, we occasionally played a game that centered around a rather genteel question: “MOTHER, MAY I?”  In hindsight, I suppose that this game was invented by a skillful and creative parent who sought to teach her children two important life skills: 1) being polite, and 2) observing boundaries.

Here’s how the game is played.  One child (regardless of gender) volunteers to serve as ‘MOTHER’ and the others position themselves in a horizontal line, about 20 feet (6 meters) from the game leader.  The MOTHER then chooses one of her playmates and says something like this: “Tony, you may take three giant-steps forward.”  Before doing so, the child-player MUST respond, “MOTHER, MAY I?”

The MOTHER tries to make the game more interesting by varying both the NUMBER and KIND of steps that might be taken, e.g. “Wesley, you may take two scissors-steps,” (or) “Doris, you may take four baby-steps” (or) “Lois, you may take three kangaroo-steps.” Indeed, there seems to be an unlimited variety of forward movements one might be called upon to take, e.g. twirly-steps, turtle-steps, umbrella-steps, jumping jack-steps, even side-steps.

While this game might sound somewhat simplistic, it had rather intriguing possibilities.  Of course, the child who successfully reaches and touches MOTHER wins and is given the opportunity to serve as leader in the next round.  But here’s what makes the game truly interesting.  In the excitement of the moment, the playing children sometimes forget to respond by asking “MOTHER, MAY I?”  This oversight causes them to be sent all the way back to the starting point.  For example, a child could be just about in position to reach out and touch MOTHER and win, but the thrill of that moment occasionally generates a memory lapse, which results in starting all over from square one.

This game is not only fun, it is loaded with spiritual significance.  Because as believers in the Kingdom of God, our success is intrinsically tied to our willingness and consistency in ASKING (not necessarily the Mother), but THE FATHER, for purity, purpose, permission and power.  Only under the constant direction and wise governance of THE FATHER may we successfully “live and move and have our being.” (Acts 17:28) It’s a challenging lesson to learn for those of us who consider ourselves ‘independent thinkers.’

Here’s our practical dilemma.  In life’s various and sundry moments of excitement, we sometimes forget or simply fail to ask, “FATHER, MAY I?”  As a result, we suffer tremendous delays or reversals.  Sometimes, it ‘feels’ like we are pushed way back at the beginning, to start our journey all over again.  But GOD is in the midst of it all. (Romans 8:28)

The Apostle James provides important insight.  He writes, “You HAVE NOT because you ASK NOT.” (James 4:2) James was not referring to asking for THINGS, as many might imagine, but he was referring to seeking the perfect will of God.  James was advising us to proactively receive GOD’S INTENTIONAL DESIGN FOR LIFE FULFILLMENT, which can only be derived from seeking HIM, HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS and HIS KINGDOM. (Psalm 27:8 – Philippians 3:10 – Matthew 6:33)

My friends, before you make your next move, ask HIM for wisdom, direction and timing.  “FATHER, MAY I?”  Winner-believers, our Father will surely make life more interesting by varying both the NUMBER and KIND of steps we may take.  And, if we approach Him with heart-sincerity, i.e. a genuine desire to apprehend and actualize His perfect will, sooner or later (invariably and inevitably) we will be in such close proximity that we may easily REACH out and TOUCH Him.

MUST I ALWAYS LISTEN?

MUST I ALWAYS LISTEN?

Life is a series of important lessons, either revealed through random experiences, or channeled through advising voices that fall into two categories: those we should carefully attend to and those we should totally ignore.  Consider the following story to discern this truth.

Once upon a time there was a group of tiny frogs that arranged an athletic competition.  Their goal was to see who would be the first to reach the apex of an extremely high tower.  A huge crowd gathered around the tower to observe the race and cheer on its contestants.

However, this race commenced under a dim pall of corporate doubt.  That is, no one in the crowd believed the tiny frogs would ever reach the top of tower.  Negative statements abounded: “They will never make it!”  “Fat chance even one will succeed!”  “That tower is much too high!”

True to the predictions of the crowd, the tiny frogs began collapsing, one by one, except for a relative few who in fresh tempo were climbing higher and higher.

Intermittently, the crowd still yelled, “It’s too difficult!  You won’t make it!”

More and more tiny frogs became discouraged, exhausted, or simply gave up.  Nevertheless, one frog continued to climb higher and higher and higher.  It seemed this unlikely climber just wouldn’t quit, despite her skeptics and naysayers.

In the end, everyone else had given up, except for that one tiny frog.  After a monumental and heroic effort, she was the only one who persevered and reached the top!  Naturally, all the other frogs (those who competed and those who observed) wanted to know how this one little frog could scale that seemingly insurmountable height.
When a fellow contestant inquired as to how she had found the strength to succeed and reach the goal, she seemed to ignore her questioner.  After a long pause, the whole crowd had a light bulb moment.  It turned out that the winner of the competition was TOTALLY DEAF!  Her very being exemplified a staunch refusal to tune-in to trash.

Bottom-line: Never ever listen to other people who are negative or pessimistic because they may nullify your most precious dream, the one you hold closest to your heart!

My friend, all through life, you must keep on dreaming and daring.  And while you are climbing, focus solely on the voice of THE PARACLETETHE ONE who walks alongside, for your edification, direction and comfort. (John 14:26 – John 15:26 – John 16:13-14) Remember the words of Jesus Christ: “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” (John 10:27)

Incidentally, you may also wisely attend to the encouraging whispers of like-minded believers whom HE sends and anoints as covenant partners.  To all others, turn a deaf ear, and keep on scaling your mountain. You can (and you will) make it!

A REASONABLE PERSPECTIVE

A REASONABLE PERSPECTIVE

Achieving joy and contentment in life is relatively simple.  Of course, it involves complete commitment to Christ as our sure and steadfast foundation.  Beyond that, there is the need to maintain perspective, the art of viewing life through the wisdom lens of The Word, which keeps us focused, grounded and balanced.

A close friend once offered this advice: “To gain a reasonable degree of life fulfillment, there are three rules.  The first rule says we must follow the second rule.  The second rule says don’t take yourself too seriously.  And the third rule says there is no other rule aside from the second rule.”

While life is likely more complicated than those statement, it represents a rather reasonable and practical viewpoint.  Attitude counts, much more than we may ever know.  So…we should never take ourselves so seriously that we cannot smile during momentary setbacks, disappointments, or failures.  We all have challenging moments, don’t we?  Whenever I find myself obsessing over some unchangeable circumstance, I remind the man in the mirror: ‘SMILE…it’s not that serious!’  Is there any supporting evidence?  Of course!  The sun rose this morning.  It will set this evening.  And it will surely rise again tomorrow, regardless of our individual or collective experiences.  Don’t worry so much.  God’s got your back and it will all work out in the end.

FERRIS WHEEL SYNDROME

FERRIS WHEEL SYNDROME

Let’s face it.  In life, we ought to be always going somewhere because our intended destination is an integral component of actualizing our God-designed destiny.  That’s one reason why I never cared so much for Ferris wheels.  They traverse in wide circles; they move up and down; yet they never travel anywhere.  Their entry and exit points are virtually one and the same.

There is a second reason why Ferris wheels are not my cup of tea.  Although going up is a blast (take-offs are always lots of fun), I loathe that weightless and sinking feeling at the crest of the downward descent.  It takes my breath away and sickens me.  Even now, thinking about it transports me to a rather unpleasant childhood flashback, which is my third reason for disliking Ferris wheels.

At our annual Monessen Community Picnic, one of my now deceased former classmates, Keith Guzzie, coaxed me into riding along with him.  At first glance, it really didn’t look like something I wanted to do.  That Ferris wheel was dauntingly tall and I was somewhat small.  Also, we were only in the 3rd grade and I had never ridden before.  To my detriment, I was totally transparent about my anxiety, and outwardly filled with trepidation as we sailed rapidly through the air.  Keith loved it; I hated it!  Worse yet, when time came to disembark, we were stuck at the top while the operator slowly released riders below one-by-one.  Keith took one glance at me, smirked mischievously, then started rocking back and forth, as hard as possible, laughing loudly and seemingly relishing my apparent fear.

After what seemed like a lifetime, we arrived at the bottom.  With shaky and sweaty palms upraised, I jumped from my seat and vowed never to ride that Ferris wheel again.  It’s a vow I have happily kept.

It occurs to me that our lives are replete with potential for such Ferris wheel experiences.  One might say that it’s the circular and cyclical nature of the beast.  As Solomon wisely observed, “That which has been is what will be, that which is done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun.” (Ecclesiastes 1:9)

Actually, some people seem to thrive on circular sameness, that is, succumbing to serial failures that spring from our human tendency to tread familiar paths and passages.  It’s the practical reason why Satan needs only three weapons in his arsenal of spiritual warfare. (I John 2:16) Only a relative few are required to bring about spiritual paralysis, since (for most of us) it is not the variety of sin that ensnares us, but the powerful pull of JUST ONE.  I call it FERRIS WHEEL syndrome, i.e. our typical tendency to become mired in the repetitious and destructive quagmire of our individual issues.  Indeed, it is the usual, customary and familiar traps that manage to capture our attention and to victimize so many.

I am eternally grateful that GOD (eventually) endowed me with sufficient wisdom, tenacity and courage to dismount those ‘rides’ that are disguised as fun but feel more like folly and fear.  Upon exiting my customized FERRIS WHEEL of life, I made a heartfelt vow - similar to one I had sent heavenward as an 8-year-old boy – “I won’t be back…no more!”  Thank God for the victory and freedom that resides in the right-ride-of-life, which is simply embracing a dedicated relationship with our loving and living Lord.

TAKING RESPONSIBILITY

TAKING RESPONSIBILITY

A beloved Amish proverb is my constant call to the practice of personal responsibility and accountability.  It simply says, “Instead of putting others in their place, put yourself in their place.”

How easy it is to get caught up in the blame game!  Agreed?  But finger-pointing is never a comely, polite, or healthy practice.  My Dad often reminded us: ‘Whenever you point your index finger to condemn others, there are three fingers pointing back at you and one pointing up to God.’

Life experiences teach us that other people are certainly capable of causing pain, pressure, or problems.  But I have a suggested solution, one that might seem cynical at first glance, but represents a more practical response to the offense of others.  When you ‘feel’ a certain way about something someone has done, silently ask yourself this question: “SO WHAT?”  After all, when we net it all out, there are relatively few things others can do that will have lifelong impact…unless WE allow it to become so.  Therefore, any decision to repeatedly rehearse the offenses of others, i.e. to hold tenaciously to an angry or unforgiving spirit, is much more detrimental to ourselves than it is to others.

So why not take personal responsibility?  It’s a healthy choice.  Frequently, I pray alone to our Lord, asking Him to reveal my flaws, errors, inconsistencies, or misconceptions.  This enables me to see MYSELF more clearly and to move on with my life – even while I am aware that someone may have acted in a way that is intentionally damaging or deceitful.

This personal choice informs and instructs me.

This personal choice motivates and mobilizes me.

This personal choice favors and frees me.

This personal choice empowers me to embrace the marvelous journey that my Creator has designed – with a purposeful commitment to passion, purity, power, reconciliation and agape.
All of us are responsible for our own attitudes and actions. Admittedly, we will encounter challenging moments-of-decision, but we will opt for the proactive and peaceful quest for understanding and forgiveness. We choose to walk a mile in the shoes of others. We choose acceptance. We choose unconditional love.

LOOK OUT FOR LANDMINES!

LOOK OUT FOR LANDMINES!

Landmines are explosive concealed military devices which are designed to passively destroy or disable enemy targets without the risk of directly engaging the warring adversary.  Injury or death results, either from the direct blast or from lethal fragments hurled with great force from its epicenter.  During past wars, landmines were detonated by direct pressure, i.e. the weight of the person stepping on the landmine or the vehicle driving over it.

The latest generation of landmines is deployed to destroy military personnel and vehicles.  These weapons are called “IEDs” or improvised explosive devices.  During the USA’s most recent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, numerous allied combatants lost both life and limb as the result of these IEDs.  The use of such landmines remains controversial because they were originally condemned by “The Geneva Conventions,” seven treaties and protocols that establish standards of humanitarian treatment during warfare [1949], and later legally prohibited by “The Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines.” [1997]

It is important to recognize that landmines are typically deployed by cowards who seek to destroy their enemies safely, from a safe distance.  It occurs to me that the chief coward, Satan, plants spiritual landmines in his desperate attempts to “kill and destroy” the people of God. (John 10:10)

How so?  The archenemy of the cross of christ and all it represents is fully aware that he could never damage or destroy Almighty God.  Recognizing this, every satanic strategy of tactical destruction is aimed directly at the “children of God,” whom he recognizes as “heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ.” (Romans 8:17)

Satanic landmines are deployed by a variety of agents and in a myriad of life circumstances.  The IEDs of Hell include all of the following, and many more: 1) Our perceptions of hurt and abandonment when we are on the receiving end of unwarranted criticism; 2) The temptation to become divided against our spiritual siblings over transient and trivial matters; 3) The human tendency to embrace anxiety, loneliness, isolation and depression during times of loss or grief; 4) Our habit of holding on to stress, doubt and fear instead of trusting in our God and His unfailing Word; 5) Etcetera, etcetera and etcetera.

We are warned by the Apostle Peter to constantly be on the lookout for such cataclysmic landmines.  “Be sober, be vigilant, because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” (I Peter 5:8)

Nevertheless, there is exciting news!  GOD has endowed and armed us with robust weapons of spiritual warfare that can obliterate every IED deployment of our sworn enemy. (II Corinthians 10:4) Additionally, we are privy to advance intelligence briefings which precisely identify the location and potency of Satan’s destructive landmines.  By what means are we provided such life-saving information?  Whenever we “pray without ceasing” – whenever we “study to show ourselves approved unto God” – whenever we “walk in the Spirit” – we are amenable and available for THE HOLY SPIRIT to teach and reveal to us any potentially destructive “things to come.” (I Thessalonians 5:17 – Galatians 5:25 – II Timothy 2:15 – John 14:26-27 – John 16:13) Finally, we are secured and safeguarded within the “whole armor of God,” through which no satanic weapon can penetrate or prevail. (Ephesians 6:11-18 – Isaiah 54:17)

Does this mean that spiritual warriors are somehow exempt from being watchful during our required stint of service in the Army of the Lord?  Absolutely not!  Jesus Christ commands that we “watch and pray” in order to nullify the power of satanic IEDs. (Matthew 26:41) In fact, prayerful watchfulness is the spiritual key to being “accounted worthy to escape all things that shall soon come to pass.” (Luke 21:36) So, my spiritual siblings, stay on the lookout for landmines.

TRUE BEAUTY

TRUE BEAUTY

How might beauty be best described or characterized?  It is an enigma, an elusive mystery which encompasses centuries of scholarly debate by the world’s greatest philosophers, poets and theologians.  Dictionary.com defines “beauty” as “the quality present in a thing or person that gives intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind, whether arising from sensory manifestations, a meaningful design or pattern, or something else.”  In “Ode on a Grecian Urn,” the English romantic poet, John Keats, wrote “Beauty is truth, truth beauty – that is all ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.”

Keats seems to have arrived at a reasonable definition, especially since Jesus Christ declared “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:32)

Contemporary culture is absolutely inundated and completely obsessed with so-called ideal beauty.  This superficial quest is the crux of most media-related experiences, whether in the film, television, publication, cosmetics, or fashion industries.

However, I love the entirely simplistic and sensible manner in which Sam Levenson defines beauty.  He offers the following prescriptive admonition for all who seek to join the ranks of ‘the beautiful people’:

For attractive lips, speak words of kindness.
For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people.
For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry.
For beautiful hair, let a child run his or her fingers through it once a day.
For poise, walk with the knowledge that you will never walk alone.
People have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed and redeemed.
So never throw anybody out.
The beauty of a woman is not in her clothes, her figures, or her hair.
The beauty of a woman lies in her heart, the place where love resides.
The beauty of a woman is reflected in her soul.
It’s the caring she gives and the passion she shows.
This kind of beauty just grows and grows!

The sage, Solomon, wrote “Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that fears the Lord, she shall be praised.” (Proverbs 31:30) To wit, those who would be genuinely beautiful must be authentic lovers of God.

Bottom-line: Beauty can never be properly defined by one’s bodily shape, hair quality, or facial features.  First and foremost, it is an interior spiritual phenomenon.  If you would be truly beautiful, then 1) always have a heart that is truly devoted to God, and 2) always demonstrate sincerity, empathy and love for your fellows.  From the vantage point of eternity, any other manifestation of beauty is vain, fleeting and inconsequential.

THE ETERNAL LEGACY OF OVERCOMERS

THE ETERNAL LEGACY OF OVERCOMERS

WINNER-BELIEVER, you are presently engaged in spiritual warfare that may ‘feel’ inescapable and endless. (Ephesians 6:12) Nevertheless, you MUST “fight the good fight of faith” with full awareness that you will ultimately prevail. (I Timothy 6:12) Jesus Christ has provided strategic and tactical advantages for you: an incontrovertible Word, an impenetrable armor and an incredible arsenal. (Colossians 3:16 – Ephesians 6:13-17 – II Corinthians 10:4) Best of all, the final chapter in your spiritual saga is already penned; it reveals that you are (right now) victorious and (already) seated “in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” (II Corinthians 2:14 – Romans 8:37 – Ephesians 2:6)

WINNER-BELIEVER, YOU ARE AN OVERCOMER!  So, believe it, receive it and walk confidently in your spiritual authority. (Hebrews 10:35) Why?  YOU WIN!  Numerous accrued benefits are the spiritual legacy of every believer-overcomer.  Many are present-day realities. (Matthew 19:29 – Galatians 5:22-23) Moreover, magnificent endowments await you at the final stop of your earthly stewardship.  “The Word of God is living and powerful,” and speaks eloquently concerning your future estate; so, let’s hear The Word. (Hebrews 4:12)

I John 5:4-5 (NKJV)
For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.  Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

Revelation 2:7 (NKJV)
He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God.

Revelation 2:11 (NKJV)
He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes shall not be hurt by the second death.

Revelation 2:17 (NKJV)
He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give some of the hidden manna to eat. And I will give him a white stone, and on the stone a new name written which no one knows except him who receives it.

Revelation 2:26 (NKJV)
And he who overcomes, and keeps My works until the end, to him I will give power over the nations.

Revelation 3:5 (NKJV)
He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels.

Revelation 3:12 (NKJV)
He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he shall go out no more. I will write on him the name of My God and the name of the city of My God, the New Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God. And I will write on him My new name.

Revelation 3:21 (NKJV)
To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.

Revelation 21:7 (NKJV)
He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son.

The Apostle Paul offers a succinct summary of our Heavenly benefits: “For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.” (Romans 8:18) “But as it is written, eye has not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which GOD has prepared for those who love Him.” (I Corinthians 2:9) Keep your eyes on the prize!

THE CHALLENGE OF KNOWING

THE CHALLENGE OF KNOWING

During the Old Testament era, God unveiled a simple yet powerful truth through the Prophet Hosea: “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” (Hosea 4:6) Self-awareness is mission critical, but it can be extremely elusive, especially in the presence of distracting voices and background noises.  Resultantly, many live and die without ever realizing their true identity or actualizing their God given purpose.

It reminds me of the story of a farmer who found a displaced eagle’s egg.  Failing to recognize its intended identity, he gingerly placed the egg in the nest of a barnyard hen.  Soon afterwards, the eaglet hatched.  Naturally, he assumed that the hen was his mother and the brood of chicks were siblings.

So all of his life, the eagle did whatever chickens customarily do, assuming his destiny was intrinsically tied to the residents of that barnyard. He scratched the earth for worms and insects.  He clucked and cackled.  And occasionally, he would thrash his wings and fly just a few feet in the air.  He was dramatically shaped and limited by his 'home environment' and by his conditioned response to the same.

Years passed by and the eagle grew old. In his declining years, he spied a beautiful bird flying high above in the cloudless sky. This magnificent creature glided in graceful majesty through powerful currents of wind. And it soared to lofty elevations with scarcely a beat of its gorgeous golden wings.

Years later, the now aged eagle gazed upwards in total awe and wonder.  “Who is that?” he whispered.

“That’s the eagle, king of all birds,” offered an observant barnyard neighbor. “HE belongs to the sky.  WE belong to the earth – we are chickens.”  Bottom-line: That poor displaced eagle lived and died as a chicken, for that’s exactly who he thought he was and all he might ever be.

He me, eagles!  If you always seem to be out of place and never able to fit in, it may well be that GOD is trying to tell you something.  I challenge you to take out your mirror, “the perfect law of liberty,” and start seeing yourself through the eyes of your Creator. (James 1:25) Jesus Christ declares, “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:32) Knowing yourself and embracing your ultimate destiny are challenges indeed, but the present and future rewards are absolutely amazing!

DRINK PLENTY OF WATER

DRINK PLENTY OF WATER

Time and again, we have all heard this advice: Drink lots and lots of water.  A medical snippet I read suggests that we drink two glasses of water in the morning (to kick-start our internal organs), along with one glass prior to meals (preferably warm for digestive purposes) and one glass at bedtime (to prevent heart attacks and strokes).  Other medical professionals recommend eight glasses daily for a healthy water regimen. Apparently, the consumption of copious amounts of water is crucial to the maintenance of health.

First, let’s consider the natural, then the spiritual ramifications.  The composition of both planet Earth and the human body provides key clues to the Creator’s intent regarding water.  Our world is comprised of two-thirds water, in contrast with the totality of land masses.  Likewise, our bodies are approximately two-thirds water, which varies somewhat based upon individual characteristics.  Our brains are seventy-five percent water; our lungs (believe it or not) are eighty-three percent water.  That fact makes drowning in water a bit more difficult to understand, right?  These truths depict the biological necessity of water.

Long distance runners talk about “hitting the wall,” which means their energy level drops to nearly zero if they are not sufficiently hydrated.  The bottom-line is that our bodies are designed to function best with ample H2O.  It might seem counterintuitive, but marathoners’ pit-stops for water do not slow them down. Instead, stopping a moment for water quickens their steps and potentiates their ability to run and finish well.

Scientists who specialize in the search for extraterrestrial life look for any evidence of water content on other planets.  Their conclusion: Where there is water, there is the possibility of life.

In the Spirit realm, water is also of vital importance.  The word “water” is mentioned over 635 times in the scriptures.  Early in creation, “the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” (Genesis 1:2) Shortly thereafter, God ordered “the waters [to] bring forth abundantly the moving creature[s] that have life.” (Genesis 1:20) Thus, one could rightfully infer that sea life emerged from those potent created waters at God’s command.  Wow!

Jesus Christ invited the now famous Samaritan woman-at-the-well to drink of “living water” that would forever quench her spiritual thirst. (John 4:10) This ‘liquid’ spiritual encounter totally transformed her life, and others in her community as well.  The new birth operates just like that.  When your spirit-thirst is truly satisfied, you are highly motivated to share that life-affirming experience with others.  In the final book of the Bible, Jesus invites “him that is thirsty” to drink “of the fountain of the water of life freely.”  This offer is generously extended to all, that is to “whosoever will.” (Revelation 21:6 and 22:17)

Even the sanctification of members of the Body of Christ is predicated upon “the washing of water by the word.” (Ephesians 5:26) Thus, Christ’s spiritual water has both life-giving and soul-purifying properties.

Within the New Jerusalem, John’s apocalyptic vision reveals the presence of “a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.”  And “on either side of the river, was there the tree of life…and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.” (Revelation 22:1-2)

Beyond any shadow of doubt, we are now spiritually alive because of Christ’s gracious infusion of living water.  The superstitious Athenians created an altar dedicated to “The Unknown God,” and there Paul identified The True Source of our being: “In HIM we live, and move, and have our being.” (Acts 17:23;28)

Therefore, we must collectively resolve to drink plenty of water.  It will bless us and all whom we encounter.  A classic American Express television commercial had this memorable slogan: “Don’t leave home without it.”  Respectfully, I beg to differ.  You could successfully leave home without the American Express card, but you should never think of traveling anywhere or doing anything without THE living water.

PERHAPS YOU DID NOT GROW UP IN CHURCH

PERHAPS YOU DID NOT GROW UP IN CHURCH

The institutional church (not the invisible church) somehow seems to have embraced a tenure system.

A while back, Belinda and I attended a Sunday morning service in which I was slated as guest speaker.  During the announcements, the congregation was informed of a member’s passing and plans for her funeral service.  The announcer’s laudatory remarks were diluted by a strange preamble: “Although she was not with us very long…”  Later on, we learned she had been a member for five years.  Headed homeward afterwards, Belinda queried (not with one iota of criticism or cynicism): “How long do you have to be a member of the church to be ‘counted’?”

We are eternally grateful that GRACE happens on Heaven’s schedule, not ours.

Some people arrive at the cross rather early in life; others later.  For example, the motivational speaker, Zig Ziglar, known all over the world for his energy, optimism and faith, first embraced Christ (not as a child), but in his mid-forties.  Ironically, due to his family’s rather passive involvement, although Zig had grown up in church, the church had not grown up in him.

To wit, Zig found himself with more doubts than belief.  Then something unexpected happened.  On July 4, 1972, shortly after he left a successful sales career to pursue a full-time public speaking career, Zig was taking an evening dip in his swimming pool.  Suddenly, he was struck by the urge to pray.  While he swam, his mind wandered, and he was filled with many questions.  Is God real?  Is He truly present in our day-to-day lives?

Zig floated on his back, staring up into the heavens.  Just then, a brilliant shooting star streaked across the night sky.  He was both startled and elated.  An unusual warmth filled him with tranquility and inner light, brighter than that shooting star.  In a flash, he knew the answers to his questions with utmost certainty.  He also knew that he must share not just positive thinking and optimism in his speeches, but also his newfound faith in God.  Throughout Zig Ziglar’s life, he talked about his heavenly sign.  He was convinced that it was a divine confirmation, the stirring up of a true sustainable faith.

Perhaps you did not grow up in church.  Perhaps your natural chronology lists you as a full-grown adult, while your spirituality index hovers at the child or adolescent stage.  By all means, please avoid the temptation to contrast your development with others who have more time and experience in matters of faith.  As you apply yourself, you will surely discover that God does not work on the singular basis of seniority.  Quite the contrary; God honors availability, commitment and consistency.  And FYI, God habitually restores ‘lost’ years. (Joel 2:25)

I am eager to lend my life-verse to you; adopt it if you like.  “Being confident of this very thing, that he who has begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 1:6) Never ever engage in the comparison game.  Just “grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.” (I Peter 3:18)

WHAT'S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT?

WHAT’S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT?
Love enables us to forge endearing and enduring connections with Christ and with others.
John 13:34-35
A new commandment I give unto you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you have love one to another.
I John 4:7-8
Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and everyone that loves is born of God, and knows God. He who loves not knows not God; for God is love.
Bottom-line: What’s love got to do with it? EVERYTHING!
I will begin this day in prayer with the love-of-my-spiritual-life, JESUS CHRIST. Then, I will spend quality time with the love-of-my-natural-life, BELINDA BASS. Happy Valentine’s Day to my phenomenal wife and to all of my wonderful sisters and brothers in the Kingdom of God.
Sisters and brothers, be continually blessed, and please (above all else) MAKE SURE YOU ARE READY TO MEET OUR SOON COMING KING. Maranatha!

CHECKS YOU CAN'T CASH

CHECKS YOU CAN’T CASH

It has been reported that during the prime of Muhammad Ali’s boxing career, a close friend grew tired of his continual claims that he was the greatest.  Knowing that Ali never played golf, his friend casually inquired of him, “So how are you at golf?”  Ali responded with an expected and humorous confidence: “I’m the best!  I just haven’t played yet.”

Point To Ponder: ‘Does your mouth write checks your life can’t cash?’

Recently, I read an interesting quotation by Simon Cowell, formerly of American Idol fame.  He said, “I could sit back and get someone to spin my achievements, I suppose, but when I see others do that, I always think, ‘Why are you telling me how successful you are?’  I am always suspicious of those kinds of boasts.”  Me too, Mr. Cowell, me too.

There is a synonym for boasting, one which is often employed in our day by those who relish various degrees of self-exaltation.  It is called “promotion.”  To be candid, far too many (in the guise of promoting personal achievements or ministry involvements) resort to daily dispatches of what could aptly be described as unvarnished and unabashed boasting.  It makes me scratch my head and wonder: ‘What happened to our humility?’  Have we so soon forgotten Solomon’s sage advice?  “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” (Proverbs 16:18)

My father, the late Bishop Joseph Edison Bass, Sr., often posed a question specifically designed to make us aware of the need for genuine humility.  Dad asked us, “What do you have that you did not receive?”  His question was a condensed paraphrase of the Apostle Paul’s admonition to the Church of Corinth: “For who makes you differ from another?  And what do you have that you did not receive?  Now if you indeed receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?” (I Corinthians 4:7)

Paul expanded on this ethical concept in his letter to the Church of Rome: “Where is boasting then?  It is excluded.  By what law?  Of works?  No, by the law of faith.” (Romans 3:27) Although he was “a Hebrew of Hebrews,” Paul modestly concluded that “I will rather boast in my infirmities [as opposed to my accomplishments] that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” (Philippians 3:5 – II Corinthians 12:9) To the Church of Galatia, Paul wrote, “God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.” (Galatians 6:14)

Here’s the thing.  Boasting is not only framed in an unbridled arrogance; it is also the personification of intellectual ignorance.  Why?  Because any degree of self-exaltation overlooks the undeniable fact that you and I have been “bought with a price” and were undeserving sinners summoned to the cross of Calvary by the love, mercy, grace of God.   So I must…you must…“glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” (I Corinthians 6:20) May I be transparent?  Whenever I am tempted to expand my own ego and to start tripping, I hear the inner whispered voice of my very wise father: “What do you have that you did not receive?”

James, the brother of Jesus, did not mince words about this egocentric condition: “All such boasting is evil,” he wrote. (James 4:16) David’s testimony is confirmation: “My soul shall make its boast in the Lord; the humble shall hear of it and be glad.” (Psalm 34:2) In other words, humility heals; arrogance divides and destroys.

Please allow me to pose today’s question once more: “Does your mouth write checks that your life can’t cash?”  The implication of this interrogative is completely clear.  Even though we might accomplish great and grandiose things, it is OUR LORD who is the giver of “every good and every perfect gift.”  So whatever we ARE…whatever we DO…we must humbly recognize that it all comes “from ABOVE…from THE FATHER OF LIGHTS, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.” (James 1:17) Unquestionably, any exceptional value that is inscribed on OUR LIFE CIRCUMSTANCES has been sponsored, signed and sealed by The Bank of Heaven.  Therefore, we dare not ever trip!
