TELL DAD TO HEAR MY WORDS

TELL DAD TO HEAR MY WORDS

Sometimes, it’s important to speak.  Always, it’s important to listen.  The following true story, courtesy of Brian Jett, brings these lessons home for us.  Listen with your heart.

“Son!” Tim's father shouted.  “Is it possible you could please turn that noise down!?”  Tim, who had only two months earlier earned his driver's license, calmly ejected his favorite music CD that had his favorite song.

“Sorry Dad, but I love that song cranked up loud because it makes me happy every time I hear it,” Tim less than calmly replied with a grin on his face.  His father glanced over in his son’s direction with a look of disgust.  “Tim, what on earth makes you happy by listening to that screaming guitar and what’s the name of that garbage?”

Tim smiled and vowed silently that he would never become the bitter, angry, negative and miserable father he had seen his entire life, now seated next to him on the drive home.  Tim’s mother tried her best to fend off any possible future negativity in him, their only son and child, by always praising him and even by clapping in rhythm to the music Tim would ask her to hear.

She had grown weary of trying to tell Tim how happy his father was when they first got married.  In fact, Tim told his mother that she didn't have to defend his Dad.  He promised he would be more like her when he got married and had a family of his own.

“Well Dad, the song is called “Happy” and Phil Keaggy wrote it.  He’s a great guitar player and sings great too!”  Tim’s irritated father just rolled his eyes and replied, “All I hear is that blasting guitar, so Mr. Keaggy or whatever his name is must have lost his vocal chords.”

“No way Dad!  You tell me to turn if off before he gets the chance to sing!  You never listen long enough to hear the words!”  His father shifted in his seat and pointed to a scripture Tim had pinned up on the sun visor of the old AMC Pacer he had bought with money saved since age 14, earned by mowing lawns in their neighborhood.  “That church you go to would be ashamed of you if they only knew the trash you listen to that makes you so happy!  Your Mom takes you there but it’s obviously a waste of time.  And you wonder why I don't go?!?”

As Tim neared a familiar bend in the road leading to their home, an oncoming sports car careened out of control.  Tim frantically tried to steer to the right but the red bullet slammed into the driver’s side of the Pacer, propelling it with great force against a maple tree on Tim's side of the car.

Tim’s father was jarred but had not one blemish as he looked over and saw his son’s face covered in blood, his body slumped forward and resting motionless against the steering wheel.

“Oh God!  Someone help my son!”  Tim’s father jumped out of the car and ran down the street to flag down a passing motorist.  The driver of the sports car, also unharmed, ran from his slightly damaged car with a cell phone in his hand.  “Sir, I’m sorry!  Here’s my phone,” the college-aged young man shouted with a strong smell of beer on his breath.

Tim was taken to the same hospital where he was born.  When his mother arrived in the emergency room, she embraced her distraught husband as both wept uncontrollably.  The doctor, who had administered only 30 minutes of treatment in an effort to save their son’s life, asked them to come to a private room.

“I have only had to share this kind of news three times since I began working in the emergency room at this hospital and three times is way too many,” the gray-haired doctor somberly stated.  “Your son’s chest cavity was crushed and we did all we could, but he just didn’t have the strength to hold on.”  Tim’s parents placed their hands to their faces, sobbing and hoping that what they had just heard was wrong.

“Doctor,” Tim’s mother pleaded, “Are you telling me my son is dead?”  The doctor steadied himself and gained as much composure as he could before replying.  “Yes ma’am, your son’s injuries were extremely severe but he was alert for the last ten minutes we were trying to save him.”  Tim’s parents looked startled and waited anxiously for what the doctor would say next.

“Your son smiled at me and asked that if he died, that I’d promise to tell his Dad something.  I don't know, sir, what your son's final words will mean to you, but I am going to honor his request.  I’ve never, in all 27 years of practicing medicine, heard anyone speak with such strength and clarity as your son did in that condition.  Sir, he asked me to tell you to…please listen long enough to hear the words.”

Tim’s father melted to the floor and the doctor discerned that it would be best to leave the grieving parents alone in the private room.

Two weeks after Tim’s burial, his father opened the passenger’s side door of the Pacer that he simply could not bear to sell.  He retrieved the music CD and pulled the scripture down that remained on the visor.  He got in his Jeep and turned Tim’s favorite song up loudly and listened through the guitar solo until he heard the soulful man’s tenor voice singing the words to that song entitled “Happy.”

The lyrics rang out joyfully: “I’m so happy Lord; I’m so grateful Lord since You came to me; You set me free and You welcomed me, in Your family...”

He listened to the song repeatedly for a solid hour before he pulled his new Jeep he'd selfishly bought only three days after Tim so happily bought his old beat up AMC Pacer.  The Jeep now meant nothing to him, but as he pulled the scripture out of his shirt pocket he knew what Tim had been trying to tell him for so many years.  Tearfully he read the words of his son’s note that he clutched in his hands: “A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit.” (Proverbs 15:13)

Through Tim’s final words, empowered by the Holy Spirit, he had made sure that his Dad would never be the same again.

PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR LIFE

PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR LIFE

Some time ago I read the following true story posted on Facebook by Pastor Howard Proctor of Kingdom Life Family Christian Church in Bradenton, Florida.  It is a very powerful and poignant reminder of our need to truly tune in as we traverse this incredible journey called LIFE.  Think.

A man sat at a metro station in Washington D.C. and started to play the violin; it was a cold January morning. He played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, since it was rush hour, it was calculated that 1,100 people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.

Three minutes went by, and a middle aged man noticed there was musician playing. He slowed his pace, and stopped for a few seconds, and then hurried up to meet his schedule.

A minute later, the violinist received his first dollar tip: a woman threw the money in the till and without stopping, and continued to walk.

A few minutes later, someone leaned against the wall to listen to him, but the man looked at his watch and started to walk again. Clearly he was late for work.

The one who paid the most attention was a 3 year old boy. His mother tagged him along, hurried, but the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally, the mother pushed hard, and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. All the parents, without exception, forced them to move on.

In the 45 minutes the musician played, only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money, but continued to walk their normal pace. He collected $32. When he finished playing and silence took over, no one noticed it. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.

No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the most talented musicians in the world. He had just played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, on a violin worth $3.5 million dollars.

Two days before his playing in the subway, Joshua Bell sold out at a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100.

This is a real story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station had been organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste, and the priorities of people.

The outlines were: In a commonplace environment at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?

One of the possible conclusions from this experience could be: If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing the best music ever written, how many other things are we missing?”

Incredible, isn’t it?  All too often, we wait until a tragic event occurs, such as a close personal encounter with death or the unexpected passing of a loved one, to achieve higher levels of awareness and connectivity with others.  What are YOU waiting for?  The text of an old railroad crossing sign is particularly applicable for all of us who are overwhelmed and desensitized by our daily hustle and bustle of endless activity.  It simply read, “Stop, Look, Listen!”  LIFE is happening all around you and me.  Why not engage?  Participate.  Assist.  Interact.  Appreciate.  Touch.  Listen.  Dialogue.  Relate.  Love.  Matter!

YOU ALREADY HAVE THE VICTORY!

YOU ALREADY HAVE THE VICTORY!

Don’t worry what it ‘looks like’ right now because you are more than victorious through Jesus Christ, our Lord!  So please do not concentrate on your circumstances or your emotions, listen to the Word.

Ephesians 1:3-12 (KJV)
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:
According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:
Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.
In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence;
Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:
10 That in the dispensation of the fullness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:
11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:
12 That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.

Your present is mere prologue to a glorious future with Him.

THE FEARLESS SNOWFLAKE

THE FEARLESS SNOWFLAKE

As a long-time Connecticut resident in the northeast region of the USA known as New England, I have a definite ‘love-hate’ relationship with winter weather.  I am particularly averse to those biting blasts of chilly Arctic air that frequently invade our borders, from December through February, and beyond.  However, I love to lounge in front of a cozy fireplace, totally mesmerized by the warm glow of embers and the crackling of burning wood.

Let me be clear.  I am no fan of shoveling mountains of snow, especially in the volume and frequency of this winter past.  The snow blower ably assists my efforts, but never increases my likability for wintry storms.  Nevertheless, I love to stand at the window and gaze at the absolute beauty and awesome tranquility of newly fallen snow.

Bottom-line: I am emotionally ambivalent about our frequent downpours of winter snow, but I have a deep-seated and abiding admiration for their basic building-block, a.k.a. the snowflake.  Why?

Snowflakes are survivors.

How so?  Their birthplace is high in the stratosphere, where they form amid violent blasts of winter wind, conditions totally unimaginable and unendurable for us.  Along their gravity driven journey, they collide forcefully with one another.  And they are continually shaped (and reshaped) by treacherous winds, changing temperatures and violent collisions with fellow flakes.

In fact, before reaching the ground, their transitions and transformations are far too numerous to count.  But the difficulty of their journey produces miraculous results.  Every snowflake achieves the rare beauty of individuality and uniqueness.  In fact, no two are alike.  This is amazing, even astounding, in light of the multiplied millions that comprise any visible blanket of fallen snow.

We, too, are snowflakes.

The circumstantial winds of our lives constantly shape us; the gravity of our lives continually transports us.  We move.  We change.  We develop.  We grow.  We rise; we fall; we rise again. (Proverbs 24:16)  Indeed, we become fearless and faithful along our pathway, despite our collisions, conflicts, pressures, or pains.  And GOD transforms our diverse situations into divine appointments that develop our distinctiveness and destiny.

As we allow the Creator to define and refine our journey (and ourselves), we become the beautifully crafted, absolutely awesome, beings-of-purpose that were conceived by in His Mind long before the foundation of the world.

It’s His PLAN.  It’s our PROCESS.

Romans 8:28 (NKJV)
And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

Glide fearlessly, snowflake, for divine meaning and mission reside in your wintry storm.

TROUBLE ISN'T ALWAYS TROUBLE...SO LOOK DEEPER!

TROUBLE ISN’T ALWAYS TROUBLE…SO LOOK DEEPER!

This inspirational story comes to us from Keith Ready, an Australian inspirational author and speaker.

On a recent Saturday evening at around midnight, my wife and I were just about to turn out the light and go to sleep when we heard the sounds of a group of people talking in the street, outside our home. Then out of the blue came two loud thuds above our bedroom window, followed by the noise of laughter and people running away down our street.

We both jumped out of bed, I turned on the external lights and rushed outside unsure of what had caused the two thuds or what damage I could expect to see. The silence of the night was broken by the distant sound of people laughing and at that moment I was of a mind to chase after them, however, running bare-footed on the road in the dark is not a very wise thing to do.

I could hear dripping noises on the driveway and the flood light above our garage helped me to identify just what had happened. Our home had been the victim of an egg bombing!

Being faced with the prospect of cleaning up this sticky mess in the early hours of the morning was not a pleasing thought, on top of which I was less than impressed that we had been singled out for this annoying prank. I decided that it was too late to clean up the mess, as it would disturb our neighbors, so it could wait to the morning.

Early next morning with a bucket of warm water and scrubbing brush in hand, and with the extension ladder placed on the front wall, I was now ready to wash off what was now two dry yellowish, egg grit impregnated, 1 meter long patches above our front bedroom windows.

My task was made even more challenging by the two large canvas awnings which protect our bedroom windows from the heat and glare of the afternoon sun. My annoyance with the late night pranksters was again building to the level of the night before.

After retracting each of the awnings, something we rarely do except when there is are very high winds, I then climbed the ladder to clean up the first patch of egg stain and then move the ladder to clean the second patch. As I climbed the ladder for the second time, I noticed that the glass in a small window just under the roof line was very badly cracked. On closer inspection the crack ran around over half of the outer edge of the window pane. As the awning protected the window, it was clear to me that the damage had not been caused by the egg bombing. As I carefully placed my hand on the glass, I discovered that the pane of glass was very loose and had the window been closed with any force, it would have most likely shattered and the glass dropped to the drive way, some seven meters below.

Just a few meters away, we have a basketball ring and on most days of the week there are up to six young people who play in the immediate area, including both my sons. My thoughts immediately turned to what could have happened if the broken glass in the window had gone undetected for much longer and then suddenly shattered. The likelihood of my two sons and their friends being seriously injured was extremely high.

After quickly washing the remaining egg stain off the front wall and with the help of Tom, my youngest son, I got to work with some heavy duty masking tape and secured the cracked window as best I could. Within 24 hours the cracked window had been replaced and all was back to normal, except for the small bits of egg shell I kept finding on the front drive way and stuck to our garage doors.

Over the next few days, I realised that had our home not been bombarded by those eggs late on that Saturday night, I may not have discovered the broken window pane before it shattered and came down all over our drive way.

Even though it had been an annoyance at time, the broken eggs and the stains were cleaned up very quickly, however, the pain that could have been caused by the shattering of glass would never gone away and would have haunted my wife and myself, forever and a day.

The cold shudder that ran down my spine when I first discovered the cracked window and the thought about the consequences of someone being seriously injured or even killed, made me realise just how very lucky we had been.

Frequently in life, the small things that happen to us may have a negative impact and cause some form of pain, sadness, discomfort or personal aggravation. It is often said that we should not 'sweat the small stuff' and always look for the positive outcome or the silver lining in those dark clouds of the current circumstance, even though at the time that is not always an easy thing to do.

My personal experience with the egg bombing on that Saturday evening reminded me that in most cases there is always a flip side to everything that happens to us and that often the flip side can provide a positive outcome or an even greater benefit, if not now, then at some time in the future.

From now on whenever I see or break an egg, I will think of the egg bombing incident and say a thank you to those late night pranksters.

I will always be reminded of Jean-Paul Sartre's quote: “What is important is not what happens to us, but how we respond to what happens to us.”

Amen?  Amen!

THE POST-RESURRECTION APPEARANCES OF JESUS CHRIST

THE POST-RESURRECTION APPEARANCES OF JESUS CHRIST
During the forty day period following the resurrection of JESUS CHRIST, there were numerous occasions when He appeared dramatically to His disciples, manifesting tangible confirmation that He was indeed alive and had totally triumphed over Satan, sin, death, hell and the grave.
On Resurrection Sunday, Jesus appeared first to Mary Magdalene, to Mary (the mother of James), Joanna, “and other women that were with them.” (Mark 16:9 – Matthew 28:9 – Luke 24:10)  They were duly commissioned to share the good news with the eleven surviving disciples.
Hearing this news, Peter raced to the sepulcher.  On the road to Emmaus, Jesus appeared and conversed with two of His followers, Peter and Cleopas, who did not immediately recognize Him.  Jesus then expounded the scriptures to them, explaining how the Son of God must have suffered to enter into His glory.  Dr. Luke outlined their personal encounter with Christ.  Here’s how it ended:
Luke 24:28-35 (NKJV)
28 Then they drew near to the village where they were going, and He indicated that He would have gone farther. 29 But they constrained Him, saying, “Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent.” And He went in to stay with them. 30 Now it came to pass, as He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight. 32 And they said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?” 33 So they rose up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, 34 saying, “The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!” 35 And they told about the things that had happened on the road, and how He was known to them in the breaking of bread.
That same Sunday evening, Jesus appeared to ten of His disciples.  Judas was deceased; Thomas was absent.
John 20:19-20 (NKJV)
19 Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.
Eight days later, Jesus appeared again to His disciples, Thomas being present.
John 20:26-28 (NKJV)
26 And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, “Peace to you!” 27 Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing.” 28 And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”
While seven of the disciples were fishing on the Sea of Tiberias, Jesus appeared and performed a miracle of abundance.  Obeying Jesus’ directive, they caught 153 large fish and dined sumptuously with The Master.  “This is now the third time Jesus showed Himself to His disciples after He was raised from the dead.” (John 21:14)  On various occasions, simply by eating food with His disciples and also by appearing and vanishing before their eyes, Jesus displayed key characteristics of His post-resurrection body, which believers will also possess at His second coming. (I Corinthians 15:50-55)
The Apostle Paul also recorded an occasion when Jesus was seen by “five hundred brethren at once,” indicating that His appearances were not limited to the inner circle of disciples, but occurred publicly. (I Corinthians 15:6)  Paul also documented Christ’s private appearances to James and to himself (on the road to Damascus), “as one born out of due time.” (I Corinthians 15:7-8 – Acts 9:1-5)
Furthermore, Jesus appeared to eleven disciples on a mountain in Galilee. “When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted.” (Matthew 28:16-17)  There they received the apostolic authority to evangelize the entire world, known to us today as THE GREAT COMMISSION.
Matthew 28:18-20 (NKJV)
18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”  Amen.
In the prologue to The Acts of the Apostles, Dr. Luke recorded the final appearance, impartation and instruction of Jesus Christ:
Acts 1:1-9 (NKJV)
1 The former account I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, 2 until the day in which He was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen, 3 to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God. 4 And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; 5 for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” 6 Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. 8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” 9 Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight.
HALLELUJAH, WHAT A SAVIOR!  Whenever I reflect on the life and legacy of JESUS CHRIST, I stand in awe of Him.  It is my prayer that we will walk daily in the love, grace, mercy, humility, authority and power of the Risen Savior.  And may we always live in His righteousness and with earnest expectation of His imminent return. (Acts 1:10-11 - Titus 2:11-13)

JESUS CHRIST, THE PLENIPOTENTIARY FOR OUR SINS

JESUS CHRIST, THE PLENIPOTENTIARY FOR OUR SINS

According to Dictionary.com, a plenipotentiary is one who is “invested with full power or authority to transact business on behalf of another.”  This term accurately characterizes both the mission and message of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

In order to reverse our fore-parents’ willful violation of our original created covenant and intimate fellowship with God, Jesus Christ was born (humbly) into a fallen world system, as very God and very man.  That is, He was human enough to connect with us, but He was God enough to correct us.

How so?  By living a life of sinless perfection and by dying vicariously on the cross, He satisfied the righteous demands of God and He paved the pathway for our complete at-one-ment with the Father.

Words cannot adequately convey our eternal gratitude for His willingness to submit to the unjust judgments of men and the incomprehensible agonies of the cross.

On this Good Friday, I celebrate the life and legacy of our Lord.  He died for me.  He literally went to hell in my name so that I could go to Heaven in His name.  He died for you.  He literally went to hell in your name so that you could go to Heaven in His name.

Ephesians 4:7-10 New King James Version (NKJV)
But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift.
Therefore He says: “When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, and gave gifts to men.”
(Now this, “He ascended”—what does it mean but that He also first descended into the lower parts of the earth?
10 He who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.)

Hallelujah, what a Savior!

What can I say, other than this?

Jesus, I’ll never forget what You’ve done for me…
Jesus, I’ll never forget how You set me free…
Jesus, I’ll never forget how You brought me out…
Jesus, I’ll never forget…no never!

Thank you, JESUS!
