TRUTH UNMASKED

TRUTH UNMASKED

In 1985, Cher starred in a movie called “Mask.” I remember this film so well since it was completed in the year of my mother’s death, and because it is one of my all-time favorites due to its sensitive portrayal of transcending the differences that tend to define and limit us. Cher played the biker mother of Roy “Rocky” Dennis, a teenager who struggled with a severe facial deformity commonly known as “Lionitis” due to its disfiguring cranial enlargement. Rocky had an outward appearance that was shocking and off-putting to most people, but he was a gentle and genteel soul, more so than most we ever encounter.

Because of his inherent kindness and empathy, Rocky was recruited as a volunteer in a summer camp for blind youth. I suppose the underlying rationale was that the campers could not see his face, so they would likely judge him on the basis of who he actually is, not what he looks like. That’s exactly what happened.

During that summer, Rocky developed a romantic relationship with one of the teenage girls. Having been blind since birth, she had no way of understanding what Rocky was ‘seeing’ when he spoke of commonplace things like colors or clouds. But Rocky was determined to communicate clearly and share those visual experiences with her. He came up with a brilliant idea on how he might do it.

One day, he led his girlfriend into the kitchen and over to the refrigerator. He took out a cold rock he had placed there earlier and deposited it into her hands. “That’s blue!” Rocky exclaimed excitedly. Then he led her over to the oven and retrieved a rock that had been slightly heated. As he placed it gently in her hands, she commented on how warm the rock felt to her. “That’s red!” Rocky shouted out. Then he pulled out a bunch of cotton balls and placed them in her hands. “That’s what clouds are like!” Rocky explained. Both were thrilled to realize that this was the very first time the blind girl could truly ‘see’ colors and clouds.

Of course she never saw colors and clouds as they actually are, but by comparing them to things already familiar to her, she was able to gain a real sense of those unknown experiences.

OUR FATHER initiates a similar strategy in opening up our spiritual awareness and understanding. As mortal beings, we could never fully comprehend transcendent truths like eternity, or Trinity, or divine atonement, or any number of theological truths. But THE LIVING WORD lovingly breaks down these challenging concepts for us – into bitesize nuggets we can chew on, swallow and digest. The parables of Jesus Christ are one primary example. Jesus wisely begins where we are, from a foundation of knowledge and settings which are fully familiar to us, and thereby paints crystal-clear pictures of our covenant connections to His grace, mercy and love.

What Rocky did for his blind friend is only a practical reenactment of what Christ has already done for us. The One who is “the way, the truth, and the life” continually unmasks truth and reveals it so freely, clearly, powerfully and lovingly to us. (John 14:6)

GIVING THE WRONG DIRECTIONS?

GIVING THE WRONG DIRECTIONS?

A young mother was returning home one afternoon with her two daughters, Kimberly, age three, and Kristi, six months.  She pulled into the driveway and stopped to check the mailbox.  But when she returned to the car, Kimberly had pushed the locks down on both doors and the key was still in the ignition.  For a full hour she tried to explain to Kimberly how to pull up the door handle.  Mom was on the verge of tears since Dad wasn’t home.  And since they lived out in the country, there were no neighbors to help.  Finally young Kimberly softly tapped on the window and said, “Mommy, do you want me to roll down the window?”

Feel free to draw your own conclusions from this story.

LISTEN!

LISTEN!

It has been said that God granted us two ears and one mouth, which simply means we should listen twice as much as we speak.  I read the following insight by someone who seemed to be having a tough time breaking through the so-called communication barrier.  She wrote, “I know you believe you understand what you think I said, but I’m not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.”  Think about it.  Active listening is foundational and mission critical to mutual respect.

Hearing others clearly and completely is so vitally important in relationships that I call it “The Ministry of Listening.”  Margaret Miller wrote, “Most conversations are simply monologues delivered in the presence of a detached witness.”  BEING THERE…emotionally present and fully attentive…shows that you care.

HUSBAND AND WIFE COMMUNICATIONS

HUSBAND AND WIFE COMMUNICATIONS

In their book, “Husbands and Wives,” Gary Smalley and John Trent cite a Harvard study of several hundred preschoolers in whom researchers discovered a very interesting phenomenon.  Reviewing recordings of children’s playground conversations, they realized that most of the sounds coming from the little girls’ mouths were recognizable words.  However, only 60 percent of the sounds coming from the little boys were recognizable.  The other 40 percent were sound effects like “Vrrrooooom!” “Aaaaagh!” or “Toot toot!”

This difference apparently persists into adulthood.  Communication experts say that the average woman speaks over 25,000 words a day while the average man speaks only a little over 10,000.  What does this mean in marital terms?  On average, wives reported that they need to spend 45 minutes to 60 minutes each day in meaningful conversation with their husbands.  On the other hand, husbands reported that they need fifteen to twenty minutes of discourse, once or twice a week!

Hey guys, all of us can do a bit better, myself included!

TRUSTING THE FATHER

TRUSTING THE FATHER

In his book, “Holy Sweat,” Tim Hansel relates this story about his relationship with his son:

One day, while Zac and I were out in the country, climbing around in some cliffs, I heard a voice from above me yell, “Hey Dad, catch me!” I turned around to see Zac joyfully jumping off a rock straight at me. He had jumped and then yelled “Hey Dad!” I became an instant circus act, catching him. We both fell to the ground. For a moment after I caught him I could hardly talk. When I found my voice again I gasped in exasperation: “Zac! Can you give me one good reason why you did that???” He responded with remarkable calmness: “Sure...because you’re my Dad.” His whole assurance was based on the fact that his father was trustworthy. He could live life to the hilt because I could be trusted.

Wow! Isn't that even more true for our covenant relationships with the Father?  We trust Him.  Therefore, we can live with peace, joy, and blessed assurance that He sees, knows and cares.

THE MYSTERY OF GOD

THE MYSTERY OF GOD

My friend, I don’t know if you like watermelon or not; I certainly do.  Consider this.  The watermelon seed is powerful indeed.  It has the power of drawing from the ground and through itself 200,000 times its tiny weight.  It is an amazing marvel of creation.  The seed forms artistic green colors on its outside surface.  Then on the inside it forms a white rind and a delicious red heart, inlaid with many black seeds, each of which is capable of drawing through itself 200,000 times its weight and starting the that delightful growth process all over again.  The miraculous wonders of creation are merely clues to the marvelous and majestic mystery of God.

Remember that you, too, are a fruitful and productive spiritual seed; so reproduce yourself and grow God’s faith and favor in others.

ONLY GOD IS TRULY GREAT

ONLY GOD IS TRULY GREAT

In 1715, King Louis XIV of France died after a 72 year reign. He had called himself "The Great," and was the monarch who made the famous statement, “I am the state!” His court was the most magnificent in Europe, and his funeral was equally spectacular. As his body lay in state in a golden coffin, orders were given that the cathedral should be very dimly lit with only a special candle set above his coffin, to dramatize his greatness. At the memorial, thousands waited in hushed silence. Then Bishop Massilon began to speak. Slowly reaching down, he snuffed out the candle and said, “Only God is great.”

Indeed.

THE SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD

THE SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD

Newscaster Paul Harvey told a remarkable story of God's providential care over thousands of allied prisoners during World War II, many of whom were Christians. One of America's bombers took off from the island of Guam headed for Kokura, Japan, with a deadly cargo. Because clouds covered the target area, the sleek B-29 circled for nearly an hour until its fuel supply reached the danger point. The captain and his crew, frustrated because they were right over the primary target yet not able to fulfill their mission, finally decided they had better go for the secondary target.

After fulfilling their secondary mission, the B-29 headed for its home base. Later, an officer received startling information from military intelligence. Just one week before their bombing mission, the Japanese transferred one of their largest groups of captured Americans to the city of Kokura. Upon reading this, the officer exclaimed, “Thank God for that protecting cloud! If the city hadn't been hidden from the bomber, it would have been destroyed and thousands of American boys would have died.”

God’s activity often takes place behind the scenes; but He moves all the scenes that He is behind. We have to remember this and patiently allow Him to work.  Trust God. (Proverbs 3:5-6)

OPEN THE EYES OF MY HEART

OPEN THE EYES OF MY HEART

The early church leader, Augustine, was challenged by an unbeliever who held up his idol and said, “Here is my god; where is thine?” Augustine replied, “I cannot show you my God; not because there is no God to show, but because you have no eyes to see Him.”

I love the lyrics of a praise chorus that seeks for the grace of ‘seeing’ Jesus Christ as He really is:

Open the eyes of my heart, Lord,

Open the eyes of my heart;

I want to see You,

I want to see You.

My friends, when we have eyes to see…we will.

IT'S O.K. TO REST

IT’S O.K. TO REST

The other day, a senior friend of mine remarked rather casually: “If I had to do it all over again, I’d be too tired!”  My take-away thought: God allotted one day per week for total rest.  Why not take Him up on His offer?  Rest = Re-Creation.  Enough said!

HOW LONG SHOULD YOU STAY?

HOW LONG SHOULD YOU STAY?

I read an old Swahili proverb today that made me burst into laughter.  It says, ‘Treat your guest as a guest for two days; on the third day, give him a hoe.’  The sage Solomon expressed a similar thought, but much more bluntly: “Seldom set foot in your neighbor’s house, lest he become weary of you and hate you.” (Proverbs 25:17)

It’s great to visit, but truly, ‘Be it ever so humble, there’s no place like home.’

WHAT TIME IS IT?

WHAT TIME IS IT?

Arguably, one of the most important of life lessons is a keen awareness and proper use of time.  Seneca wrote, “We are always complaining that our days are few, yet acting as though there will be no end.”  To wit, the Psalmist David prayed, “Teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” (Psalm 90:12)

In truth, life passes by so swiftly that we must learn to use our time wisely lest time and circumstance wring the usefulness out of us.  Scripturally speaking, we are afforded “three score and ten,” a mere 70 years to live with purpose and fulfillment and settle affairs with our Creator.  That’s only 25,550 days; and if you exceed your allotment, it is by God’s grace.  So make every moment count, remembering that only what you do for Christ will last.

PROTECTING YOUR CHARACTER

PROTECTING YOUR CHARACTER

According to Wayne Dyer, “Your reputation is in the hands of others.  You can’t control that.  The only thing you can control is your character.”  Indeed.  Reputation is who others think you are.  Character is who God knows you are.

After the American Civil War, managers of the infamous Louisiana Lottery approached General Robert E. Lee to ask if they could use his name in their financial scheme.  They promised that he would soon be rich.

Astounded at their request, Lee straightened up, buttoned his gray coat, and shouted, “Gentlemen, I lost my home in the war.  I lost my fortune in the war.  I lost everything except my name.  My name is not for sale, and if you fellows don’t get out of here, I’ll break this crutch over year heads!”  Wow!

My friend, in every situation, your character is worth defending.

POST-RESURRECTION APPEARANCES OF JESUS CHRIST

POST-RESURRECTION APPEARANCES OF JESUS CHRIST

The New Unger’s Bible Handbook documents the post-resurrection appearances of Jesus Christ.  These witnessed appearances certainly validate the indisputable fact that He arose with absolute victory over death, hell and the grave.  Because He is “the firstborn among many brethren,” we too shall conquer death and live eternally in the presence of our Redeemer. (Romans 8:29)

Jesus Christ Appeared…

…to Mary Magdalene (Jn. 20:14-18; Mk. 16:9)
…to the women returning from the tomb (Mt. 28:8-10)
…to Peter later in the day (Lk. 24:34; I Cor. 15:5)
…to the disciples going to Emmaus in the evening (Lk. 24:13-31)
…to the apostles (except Thomas) (Lk. 24:36-45; Jn. 20-19-24)
…to the apostles a week later (Thomas present) (Jn. 20:24-29)
…in Galilee to the seven by the Lake of Tiberias (Jn. 21:1-23)
…in Galilee to the apostles and 500 believers (I Cor. 15:6)
…to James at Jerusalem and Bethany (I Cor. 15:7)
…at Mt. Olivet in His ascension (Acts 1:3-12)
…to Paul near Damascus (Acts 9:3-6; I Cor. 15:8)
…to Stephen outside Jerusalem (Acts 7:55)
…to Paul in the temple (Acts 22:17-21; 23:11)
…to John on the Isle of Patmos (Rev. 1:10-19)

Hence, our Lord and Savior “ever liveth…” (Hebrews 7:25)

JESUS LIVES!  And because HE lives, we can face tomorrow.

THE MEANING OF THE CROSS

THE MEANING OF THE CROSS

The cross of Calvary means so much to so many.  Because of Christ’s vicarious sacrifice, believers have at-one-ment and peace with The Father.  Thank you, Jesus!  You came to pay a debt You did not owe because we owed a debt we could not pay.

Allow me to cite just a few faith perspectives of that wondrous, old, rugged cross:

“The figure of the Crucified invalidates any thought which takes success for its standard.” –Dietrich Bonhoeffer

“All heaven is interested in the cross of Christ, all hell is terribly afraid of it, while men are the only beings who more or less ignore its meaning.”  –Oswald Chambers

“The cross is God's way of uniting suffering with love.”  –Georgia Harkness

“It was on the cross of Calvary that God-in-Christ dealt fully and finally with self, the nature from which all our sins flow.”  –Miles J. Stanford

“The deformity of Christ forms you.  If He had not willed to be deformed, you would not have recovered the form which you had lost.  Therefore, He was deformed when He hung on the cross.  But His deformity is our comeliness.  In this life, therefore, let us hold fast to the deformed Christ.”  –Augustine

“It has been said there was a cross in the heart of God long before the cross was erected at Calvary.  As we think about it, we will be overwhelmed by the wonder and greatness of His love for us.”  –Billy Graham

“From all that dims Mount Calvary, Oh Lamb of God deliver me.”  –Amy Carmichael

Amen, sisters and brothers, Amen!  Hallelujah, what a Savior!

LET'S LOVE ONE ANOTHER

LET’S LOVE ONE ANOTHER

These are the life-giving words of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ: “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:34-35, NKJV)

Love is unquestionably stronger than hate.  Let’s embody and exemplify God’s love.

MAKE SURE YOU APPLAUD LOVED ONES

MAKE SURE YOU APPLAUD LOVED ONES

In Dr. Ernest Mellor’s book, “Homemade,” he details the importance of appreciating others, and he does so by recalling how important applause is to children, and others as well:

“Recently my wife and I sat charmed at an outdoor performance by young Suzuki violin students. After the concert, an instructor spoke briefly on how children as young as two, three and four years old are taught to play violin. The first thing the children learn is a proper stance. And the second thing the children learn – even before they pick up the violin – is how to take a bow. “If the children just play the violin and stop, people may forget to show their appreciation,” the instructor told us. “But when the children bow, the audience invariably applauds. And applause is the best motivator we’ve found to make children feel good about performing and want to do it very well.”

Adults love applause too. Being affirmed makes us feel wonderful. If you want to rekindle or keep the flame of love glowing and growing in your marriage through the years, try showing and expressing your appreciation for your mate. Put some applause in your marriage and watch love grow.”

Thank you, Dr. Mellor, we’ll try to remember and put your sage advice into action.

THE PANDEMIC OF LONELINESS

THE PANDEMIC OF LONELINESS

Special thanks are extended to Pastor Chuck Swindoll for the following essay on loneliness:

A “Ziggy” cartoon pictured a pudgy man sitting alone in a boat, drifting toward a tunnel with the sign above, “Tunnel of Meaningful Relationships.” Think about that. Loneliness is a growing problem in our society. A study by the American Council of Life Insurance reported that the loneliest people in America are college students. That's surprising! Next on that list are divorced people, welfare recipients, single mothers, rural students, housewives, and the elderly.

An ad in a Kansas newspaper read, “I will listen to you talk for 30 minutes without comment for $5.00.” Sounds like a hoax, doesn't it? But the person who posted it was quite serious. Did anybody call? You bet! It wasn’t long before that individual was receiving 10 to 20 calls a day. The pain of loneliness was so sharp that some were willing to try anything for a half hour of companionship.

Thank you for sharing, Pastor Swindoll.  For a little more perspective on this issue, consider the recent Cigna survey which revealed that nearly half of Americans always or sometimes feel alone (46%) or left out (47%). Fully 54% said they always or sometimes feel that no one knows them well.

During my lifetime, I have identified three specific remedies to abate loneliness.  The first is prayer, for “in His presence is the fullness of joy.” (Psalm 16:11)  The second is connecting with someone who genuinely cares.  The third is being regularly engaged in serving others.  By all means, avoid pity parties like the plague.  Get up, get out, and do something.  If you are physically able, a simple walk is a wonderful way to transform your thinking and your attitude.

PHENOMENAL ACCURACY

PHENOMENAL ACCURACY

Time technicians at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (formerly the National Bureau of Standards) set a new level of precision in 1949 by inventing the atomic clock. It counted the oscillations of the nitrogen atom in an ammonia molecule and was reliable to within one second in three years. More recently, the institute switched to an atomic clock based on the vibrations of cesium atoms. It would need 300,000 years to gain or lose a single second. But those scientists are working on a still-better model. A single mercury ion will be trapped in a vacuum by laser beams and cooled to its lowest possible energy level. The atom’s oscillations will then be so stable that the new timepiece should be accurate to within one second in 10 billion years, which is the approximate life span of stars similar to our sun.

However, the Word of our Lord is most accurate of all – never losing one beat in its timeless reflection of amazing grace, illumination, love and available salvation for all. Trust.
