***IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT***

***IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT***

Today (August 20, 2023) marks my formal retirement from LoveStream Temple (a.k.a. LoveStream CyberChurch) and also from the Facebook Devotional of Pastor Wayne M. Bass.  I have been actively engaged in ministry for 56 years (commencing on July 14, 1967), and I preached my first sermon exactly 56 years ago today (on August 20, 1967) at the age of 15.  Moving forward, my ministry focus is (1) writing and publishing Christian books, (2) mentoring younger ministers, and (3) speaking in various ministry venues as the Lord allows.

I am highly appreciative of the tremendous support and encouragement I have received from my wonderful wife and ministry partner, Lady Belinda McClendon Bass, from my gifted children and extended family members, and from all who have supported me via fervent prayer and personal participation.  Most of all, I am indebted to Jesus Christ for His matchless grace, mercy, assurance, guidance and love.

During ten years of composing  the Facebook Devotionals, I have never requested an offering, and will not do so now.  However, if you have been blessed by my ministry (and if you can afford to do so), I’d be honored if you would consider purchasing my recently published book entitled “Reimagining The End-Time Church.”  The paperback is available at Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com for $16.99.  Many of you have already purchased a copy.  This book will also be a beneficial blessing to your Pastor, as a special ministry gift from you.

My dear colleagues and friends, until the Rapture, it is my earnest prayer that you and your family will be highly favored and continually blessed as you walk hand-in-hand with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Maranatha!

LOVE...JESUS STYLE

LOVE…JESUS STYLE

How did Jesus describe the love of God?

In Luke 15, He says it’s like knocking on the door of the home of an estranged family member, dreading possible rejection, only to be greeted with happy hugs, tears and a welcome home party thrown in your honor.

In Matthew 18, He says it’s like owing a crushing debt that is entirely of your own making and nearly impossible to repay, only to be told by your lender that the whole balance is forgiven.

In Matthew 18, He says it’s like being a sheep lost in the wilderness, alone and afraid, when your shepherd leaves the rest of the flock to find and rescue you.

In Matthew 20, He says it’s like putting in an hour’s work and then receiving a full day’s pay.

The grace, mercy and love of God are entirely awesome, yet absolutely available.  Amen.

DON'T MISS HEAVEN

DON’T MISS HEAVEN

Famed churchman, Dwight L. Moody, used the following fable in one of his sermons:

There’s an old legend of a swan and a crane. A beautiful swan alighted by the banks of the water where a crane was wading about seeking snails. For a few moments the crane looked at the swan in wonder and then inquired, “Where do you come from?”

“I came from heaven!” replied the swan.

“And where is heaven?” asked the crane.

“Heaven?” asked the swan, “Have you never heard of heaven?” And that beautiful bird went on to describe the grandeur of the Eternal City. She told of streets of gold, and described gates and walls made of precious stones, a river of life pure as crystal, and a tree whose leaves are for the healing of the nations. The swan even painted a verbal picture of the heavenly hosts, but without stimulating the slightest interest on the part of the crane. Finally the crane asked, “Are there any snails there?” “Snails?” repeated the swan. “No, of course not!”

“Then,” said the crane, continuing its search along the slimy banks of the pond, “you can have your heaven. I want snails!”

Moody concluded his spiritual fable with the following: “How many young persons whom God has granted the gracious advantage of a Christian home have turned their backs upon it and searched for snails? How many men have sacrificed their wives and families, their all, for the snails of sin? How many girls have deliberately turned away from loving parents and learned too late that heaven has been forfeited for snails?”

My friend, stay focused, grounded, connected and committed. Don't miss out on your eternal heritage of joy and peace in the very presence of Almighty God.

REGRET

REGRET

Robert Oppenheimer was the primary scientist responsible for the development of the atomic bomb used against Japan at the close of World War II. He was born in 1904 in New York City, and showed an early interest in science. He entered Harvard at 18 and graduated in 3 years with honors. He was considered one of the top ten theoretical physicists in the world, and specialized in the study of sub-atomic particles and gamma rays.

From 1943 he began directing 4500 men and women at Los Alamos, New Mexico, with the sole purpose of building an atomic bomb. Two years and two billion dollars later, they successfully detonated the first atomic bomb. When he saw what he had made, Robert Oppenheimer underwent a radical revaluation of his values. Upon seeing the first fireball and mushroom cloud, he quoted from the Bhagavad-gita: “I am become death, the destroyer of worlds.”

Two months later he resigned his position at Los Alamos and spent the remainder of his life trying to undo the damage, trying to get the genie of atomic weapons back into the bottle. Lesson learned. It is incumbent upon all of us to think deeply about whatever we are doing. There are some mistakes that are nearly impossible to reverse.  And that’s why we need grace.

LET IT GO

LET IT GO

A young child was raising a terrifying cry after he had shoved his hand into the opening of an expensive Chinese vase and couldn’t pull it out again. His parents tugged on his arm, with their child howling all the while. Finally, there was nothing left to do but to break that beautiful and costly vase. Then, as the heap of shards lay on the floor, it became clear why the child had been so hopelessly stuck. His little fist grasped a paltry penny he had spied at the bottom of the vase, and in his childish ignorance, would not let go.

My friend, the “Frozen” Disney character, Elsa, was absolutely on target: “Let it go!”

JUST GET IT DONE!

JUST GET IT DONE!

Bernard L. Brown, Jr., former president of Kennestone Health Care, relates a curious story about the occasionally silly struggle over who will get the necessary work done.

A patient knocked over a cup of water, which spilled on the floor beside his bed. The patient was afraid he might slip on the water when he got out of the bed, so he asked a nurse's aide to mop it up. The patient didn't know about the hospital policy which stated that small spills were the responsibility of nurse's aides and large spills were taken care of by the housekeeping department.

The nurse's aide decided that the spill was a large one, so she called the housekeeping department. A housekeeper arrived and declared the spill to be a small one. An argument followed.

“It's not my responsibility,” said the nurse's aide, “because it's a large puddle.” The housekeeper did not agree. “Well, it's not mine,” she said, “the puddle is too small.”

The exasperated patient listened for a time, then took a pitcher of water from his night table and poured the whole thing on the floor. “Is that a big enough puddle now for you two to decide?” he asked. It was, and that was the end of the argument.

My friends, let’s not quibble over the size or scope of the task; let’s just get it done!

KNOW WHAT YOU POSSESS

KNOW WHAT YOU POSSESS

The following true treasure story was printed in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on May 17, 1987:

A rock collector named Rob Cutshaw owns a little roadside shop outside Andrews, North Carolina. He hunts for rocks, then sells them to collectors or jewelry makers. He knows enough about rocks to decide which to pick up and sell, but he’s no expert. He leaves the appraising of his rocks to other people. As much as he enjoys the work, it doesn’t always pay the bills, so he occasionally moonlights, cutting wood to help put bread on the table.

While on a dig twenty years ago, Rob found a rock he described as “purdy and big.” He tried unsuccessfully to sell the rock and kept it under his bed or in his closet. He guessed the blue chunk could bring as much as $500 dollars, but he would have taken less if something urgent came up like paying his power bill. That’s how close Rob came to hawking for a few hundred dollars what turned out to be the largest, most valuable sapphire ever found. The blue rock that Rob had abandoned to the darkness of a closet – now known as “The Star of David” sapphire – weighs nearly a pound, and could easily sell for $2.75 million dollars.

My friend, what’s in your hands that you potentially devalue?  In Exodus chapter four, God used the simple rod that was in Moses’ hands to come to life miraculously.  Undoubtedly, He is fully capable of bringing forth whatever resides in or around you to fulfill your ultimate purpose and destiny.  Be absolutely aware of what is in your hands.

THE PARADOX OF PAIN

THE PARADOX OF PAIN

On the surface, one can scarcely discern any good in that familiar life experience that we call pain.  Indeed, pain has little or no intrinsic value, in and of itself.  Therefore, its presence and power are somewhat of a paradox.  How so?  For the believing sufferer, pain carries the potential of elevating faith via heartfelt submission to the perfect or permissive will of God.  And for compassionate persons, that painful circumstance will produce empathy and motivate selfless acts of love.

My friend, never allow any experience of pain to make you bitter, only better.  Yours may not be a situation where you can readily trace God’s hand, but faith will mobilize you to trust God’s plan – knowing that providence transforms even negative circumstances for our good, simply because we love Him and are called according to His divine purpose. (Romans 8:28)  To wit, our faith empowers us to handle pain, instead of allowing pain to handle us.

GREAT TEACHING INSPIRES

GREAT TEACHING INSPIRES

William A. Ward wrote, “The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.”  My friend, if you seek to lead others to a higher plain of knowledge – whether in the classroom, sanctuary, or family room – make sure that you are affirming and inspirational.  Most people don’t want to hear our pontificating, carping, or complaining.  They want to experience truth that is set forth clearly, positively and respectfully.  Even more so, we must always exemplify whatever transformational truths we hope to share with others.

THE SOURCE OF JOY

THE SOURCE OF JOY

True and lasting joy is not attainable through pleasure, position, fame, fortune, applause, or accolades of others.  Joy is only available and sustainable through an intimate covenant connection with Christ.  If you are seeking it elsewhere, prayerfully ponder.

TRANSFORMATIONAL PRAYER

TRANSFORMATIONAL PRAYE

Five young college students were spending a Sunday in London, so they went to hear the world-renowned preacher, C. H. Spurgeon. While waiting for the doors to open, the students were greeted by a man who said, “Gentlemen, let me show you around. Would you like to see the heating plant of this church?” They weren’t particularly interested, but they didn't want to offend the stranger, so they consented. The young men were taken down a stairway. Then a door was quietly opened, and their guide whispered, “This is our heating plant.”

Surprised, those students saw 700 people bowed in prayer, earnestly seeking for divine blessing on the service that was soon to begin. Softly closing the door, the gentleman introduced himself. It was none other than Charles Spurgeon.

My friend, if you are in search of the only kind of power that matters in time and eternity, it’s never attained through personal ambition. It’s found down on your knees. Try it (consistently) and you’ll discover that the Lord will surely meet you there.

LOVE IS STRONGER THAN HATE

LOVE IS STRONGER THAN HATE

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. penned the following: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness in a descending spiral of destruction. The chain reaction of evil--hate begetting hate, wars producing more wars--must be broken, or we shall be plunged into the dark abyss of annihilation.”

Jesus Christ teaches us concerning the necessity, power and impact of love. “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:34-35)

Let’s embrace genuine love in our relationships, conduct, communications and character.

MOTHER, MAY I?

MOTHER, MAY I?

As young children, we occasionally played a game centered around a rather generic question: “Mother, may I?”  In hindsight, I suppose this game was invented by a creative parent who sought to teach her children two important life skills: 1) being polite, and 2) observing boundaries.

Here’s how the game is played.  One child (regardless of gender) volunteers to serve as ‘mother’ and the others position themselves in a horizontal line, about 20 feet (6 meters) from the game leader. The mother then chooses one of her playmates and says something like this: “Tony, take three giant-steps forward.” Before doing so, the child-player must respond, “Mother, may I?”

The mother tries to make the game more interesting by varying both the number and kind of steps that might be taken, e.g. “Wesley, take two scissors-steps,” (or) “Doris, take four baby-steps” (or) “Lois, take three kangaroo-steps.” Indeed, there seems to be an unlimited variety of forward movements one could be called upon to take, e.g. twirly-steps, turtle-steps, umbrella-steps, jumping jack-steps, even side-steps.

While this game sounds somewhat simplistic, it has rather intriguing possibilities.  Of course, the child who successfully reaches and touches mother wins and is given the opportunity to lead in the next round.  But here’s what makes the game truly interesting.  In the excitement of the moment, the playing children sometimes forget to respond (before moving) by asking “Mother, may I?”  This oversight causes them to be sent all the way back to the starting point.  For example, a child could be just about in position to reach out and touch mother and win, but the thrill of that moment occasionally generates a memory lapse, with the result of starting all over from square one.

This game is not only fun for children, it’s loaded with spiritual significance.  Because as believers in the Kingdom of God, our success is intrinsically tied to our willingness and consistency in asking (not necessarily our mother), but The Father, for purity, purpose, permission and power.  Only under the constant direction and wise governance of The Father may we successfully “live and move and have our being.” (Acts 17:28) It’s a challenging lesson to learn for those of us who consider ourselves ‘independent thinkers.’  Americans should take special note of both the rewards and risks of freedom.

Here is our practical dilemma.  In life’s various and sundry moments of excitement, we sometimes forget or simply fail to ask, “Father, may I?”  As a result, we suffer substantial delays or reversals. Sometimes, it ‘feels’ like we are pushed way back at the beginning to start our journey all over again.  But GOD is in the midst of it all. (Romans 8:28)

The Apostle James provides important insight.  He writes, “You have not because you ask not.” (James 4:2) James was not referring to asking for THINGS, as some might imagine, but he was referring to seeking and embracing the perfect will of God.  James was advising us to proactively receive God’s intended design for life-fulfillment, which is only derived from seeking Him, His righteousness and His Kingdom. (Psalm 27:8 – Philippians 3:10 – Matthew 6:33)

My friends, before you make your next move, ask HIM for wisdom, direction and timing.  “FATHER, MAY I?”  Surely, winner-believers, our Father will make life more intriguing by varying both the number and kind of steps we may take.  And if we approach Him with heart-sincerity, i.e. a genuine desire to apprehend and actualize His perfect will, sooner or later (invariably and inevitably) we will be in such close proximity that we may readily reach out and touch Him.

TEAMWORK

TEAMWORK

The legendary churchman, Dwight L. Moody, penned the following insight on training a team of workers: “It is better to train ten people than to do the work of ten people.  But it is harder.”  Indeed, it is harder.  Effective teaching and training is never an assignment for the faint at heart.

Nevertheless, New Testament teachings pertaining to the Body of Christ speak quite clearly about the need to assemble, develop and deploy a dedicated group of workers to fulfill The Great Commission.  The same teamwork principle is true in every area of life.  For example, your family is likely your most important team.  In fact, the family is the basic building block of the Kingdom of God. Whatever seems to be lacking there can be taught and mastered in the presence of constant effort, diligence, patience and love.

FERRIS WHEEL SYNDROME

FERRIS WHEEL SYNDROME

Let’s face it.  In life, we ought to be always going somewhere because our intended destination is an integral component of actualizing our God-designed destiny.  That’s one reason why I never cared so much for Ferris wheels.  They traverse in wide circles; they move up and down; yet they never travel anywhere.  Their entry and exit points are virtually one and the same.

There is a second reason why Ferris wheels are not my cup of tea.  Although going up is a blast (take-offs are always lots of fun), I loathe that weightless and sinking feeling at the crest of the downward descent.  It takes my breath away and sickens me.  Even now, thinking about it transports me to a rather unpleasant childhood flashback, which is my third reason for disliking Ferris wheels.

At our Monessen Community Picnic, one of my now deceased former classmates, Keith Guzzie, coaxed me into riding along with him.  At first glance, it really didn’t look like something I wanted to do.  That Ferris wheel was dauntingly tall and I was somewhat small.  Also, we were only in the 3rd grade and I had never ridden before.  To my detriment, I was totally transparent about my anxiety, and outwardly filled with trepidation as we sailed rapidly through the air.  Keith loved it; I hated it!  Worse yet, when time came to disembark, we were stuck at the top while the operator slowly released riders below one-by-one.  Keith took one glance at me, smirked mischievously, then started rocking back and forth, as hard as possible, laughing loudly and seeming to relish my apparent fear.  After what seemed like a lifetime, we arrived at the bottom.  With shaky and sweaty palms upraised, I jumped from my seat and vowed never to ride that Ferris wheel again.  It’s a vow I have happily kept.

It occurs to me that our lives are replete with potential Ferris wheel experiences.  One might say that it’s the circular and cyclical nature of the beast.  As Solomon wisely observed, “That which has been is what will be, that which is done is what will be done, and THERE IS NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN.” (Ecclesiastes 1:9)

Actually, some people seem to thrive on CIRCULAR SAMENESS, that is, succumbing to serial failures that spring from our human tendency to tread familiar paths and passages.  It’s the practical reason why Satan needs only three weapons in his arsenal of spiritual warfare. (I John 2:16) Only a relative few tactics are required to bring about spiritual paralysis, since (for most of us) it is not the variety of sin that ensnares us, but the powerful pull of JUST ONE.  I call it FERRIS WHEEL SYNDROME, i.e. our typical tendency to become mired in the repetitious and destructive quagmire of our individual issues.  Indeed, it is the usual, customary and familiar traps that capture our attention and victimize so many.

I am eternally grateful that GOD (eventually) endowed me with sufficient wisdom, tenacity and courage to dismount those ‘rides’ that are disguised as fun but feel more like folly and fear.  Upon exiting my customized FERRIS WHEEL OF LIFE, I made a heartfelt vow - similar to one I sent heavenward as an 8-year-old boy – “I WON’T BE BACK…NO MORE!”  Thank God for the victory and freedom that resides in THE RIGHT-RIDE-OF-LIFE, which is simply embracing a dedicated relationship with our LOVING AND LIVING LORD.

ARE WE STILL DECLARING LIBERTY?

ARE WE STILL DECLARING LIBERTY?

Happy Independence Day!

As a life-long student of American history, I am aware that fifty-six men signed our Declaration of Independence. Their strong and unwavering conviction resulted in profound suffering for themselves and their families. Of those fifty-six men, five were captured by the British and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons in the Revolutionary War. One signer had two sons captured. Nine fought and died from their wounds or the hardships of war.

Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, had his ships sunk by the British navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts and died in poverty. At the Battle of Yorktown, the British General Cornwallis seized Thomas Nelson’s home for his headquarters. Nelson quietly ordered General George Washington to open fire on the Nelson home. His home was completely destroyed and Nelson died in bankruptcy.

John Hart was cruelly driven from his wife’s bedside while she lay dying. Their thirteen children fled for their lives. His mill and fields were destroyed. For over a year, he lived in forests and caves, then returned home to find his wife dead and his children gone. Only a few weeks later, Hart died from grief and exhaustion.

These historic forebearers of our national freedom sacrificed much. My fear is that our generation has presently adopted such a cavalier and haphazard approach to truth, righteousness and justice that we stand on the precipice of forfeiting what had been courageously constructed and defended with the blood and tears of many. In truth, are we yet declaring, promoting and upholding “liberty and justice for all?”  Or will that poignant phrase ultimately be relegated to the trash-heap of history?

CONFORMITY AT ANY COST?

CONFORMITY AT ANY COST?

We have an overwhelming challenge in the USA, one which must be confronted if we are to survive and thrive as a nation.  It is the uncanny influence of group-think, i.e. the tendency of many to override their upbringing, education, values and instincts, thereby embracing a herd mentality.  True freedom is the capacity for independent and critical thinking, not going along just to get along.

In Chuck Swindoll’s book, “Living Above the Level of Mediocrity,” he cites a study that aptly describes this curious group phenomenon: “A few years ago psychologist Ruth Berenda and her associates carried out an interesting experiment designed to show how people handle group pressure.  The plan was simple.  They brought groups of ten adolescents into a room for a test.  Subsequently, each group of ten was instructed to raise their hands when the teacher pointed to the longest line on three separate charts.  What one person in the group did not know was that nine of the others in the room had been instructed ahead of time that they were to vote for the second-longest line.

The experiment began with nine teen-agers voting for the wrong line.  The one differing person would typically glance around, frown in confusion, then slip his hand up voting along with the group.  The next card was raised.  Time after time, the self-conscious individual (who was actually right) would ultimately agree that a short line was longer than a long line, simply because he lacked the courage to challenge the group.  This remarkable conformity occurred 75% of the time, and was true of all ages of students. Humorously, Dr. Berenda concluded that, ‘Some people had rather be president than right’ – which is certainly an accurate assessment.”

My friend, think for yourself.  Even better, strive to discern God’s perspective on any issue, which can be discovered in the Word.

STAY POSITIVE

STAY POSITIVE

Guess what?  As much as 77% of everything we think is negative and counterproductive and works against us.  People who grow up in an average household hear “No” or are told what they cannot do more than 148,000 times by the time they reach age 18.  The result: Unintentional negative programming.

Note to Myself/Yourself: Avoid negativity like the plague.  It’s contagious.

YOUR PRICELESS GIFT OF TIME

YOUR PRICELESS GIFT OF TIME

I spotted an intriguing on-line advertisement by the Prudential Insurance Company, entitled “I’ll Do It Later.” Their ad focuses on the lost time and opportunity that results from PROCRASTINATION. It even contains a Procrastination Calculator at http://www.bringyourchallenges.com/ill-do-it-later. This calculator reveals that (on average) someone at my age has spent approximately 5.6 YEARS of their life putting things off until tomorrow, i.e., procrastinating! It really caused me to reflect and think.

What’s even more fascinating is the listing of things I might have achieved. During my theoretical 5.6 years of procrastination, I could have knitted 1.18 sweaters for the gigantic Statue of Liberty (or) I could have taken a 240,000 mile ‘road trip’ to the moon 168 times (or) I could have made and consumed 978,200 cups of tea (or) I could have received 4.5 masters degrees (or) I could have climbed Mt. Everest 389 times (or) I could have painted the Sistine Chapel 1.29 times. Hmmm…

There’s a wise axiom attributed to Edward Young in the 17th century, which warns against the inherent danger in delay. “Procrastination is the thief of time,” Young wrote. Nevertheless, the prayerful insights of the Psalmist David predate that sage saying. King David’s plea to GOD was profoundly simple: “Teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” (Psalm 90:12)

So…what are YOU doing about your dreams, goals and God-given gifts?  Are you in hot pursuit, or are you procrastinating? Could it be possible that you are paralyzed or stuck in ‘Someday Syndrome?’ Consider the fact that cemeteries are the wealthiest plots of potential on Planet Earth.  For within their gates lie multiplied millions of unrealized hopes, undeveloped relationships, unwritten books, undiscovered inventions and unfulfilled dreams!

What are YOU doing to make sure your story does not culminate in incompletion?  Prayerfully gather all of your resources: your will, your knowledge, your experience, your education, your energy, your funds, your grit, your determination, your family and friends…and before the sun sets today, plug into the wisdom of God and start making it happen!

HUMILITY BRINGS HONOR

HUMILITY BRINGS HONOR

With so many, humility seems to have become a lost character trait.  I love the commentary of St. Francis de Sales regarding the issue of human pride.  He wrote: “Some men become proud and insolent because they ride a fine horse, wear a bright feather in their hat, or are dressed in a fine suit of clothing. Who does not see the folly of this? If there be any glory in such things, the glory belongs to the horse, the bird and the tailor.”  Hmmm…

My very wise father, the late Bishop Joseph Edison Bass Sr., often quoted a scripture that raises this simple yet thought-provoking question: “What do you have that you did not receive?” (I Corinthians 4:7)  My friends, whatever we achieve or accumulate in life, we should be thankful to those upon whose shoulders we stand; and our ultimate debt of gratitude is to The One who created and endowed us.

In the words of the prophet, Micah, “What does the Lord require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8)  Self-centeredness and arrogance are never helpful.  Humility is the way up.

NEVER ALLOW ANGER TO CONTROL

NEVER ALLOW ANGER TO CONTROL

Anger is counterproductive whenever it controls you.  However, you can flip the script on anger and allow it to become motivation and energy for productivity.  For example, many years ago during a Knicks-Bullets playoff game, one of the Bullets came up from behind the great Walt Frazier and punched him in the face. Strangely enough, the referee called a foul on Frazier. Frazier didn’t complain, and his expression never changed. He simply called for the ball and put in seven straight shots to win the game – an amazing display of productive anger. It’s a great moral lesson for all of us.

GET OUT OF THE REARVIEW MIRROR

GET OUT OF THE REARVIEW MIRROR

Dr. Warren W. Wiersbe shares the following wise admonition about the tendency of some to live in the past:

“Do not say, ‘Why were the former days better than these?’ You do not move ahead by constantly looking in a rear view mirror. The past is a rudder to guide you, not an anchor to drag you. We must learn from the past but not live in the past.”

Enough said…

SOME CHOICES ARE DOWNRIGHT PAINFUL

SOME CHOICES ARE DOWNRIGHT PAINFUL

In Klyne Snodgrass’s book, “Living with Biblical Tensions,” he details an extremely painful dilemma experienced by Winston Churchill during World War II.  He was forced to make a terribly difficult choice. The British secret service had broken the Nazi code and were able to inform Churchill that the Germans were going to bomb Coventry. He had two alternatives: (1) to evacuate the citizens and save hundreds of lives at the expense of letting the German army know that their code had been broken; or (2) to take no action at all, allowing hundreds of British citizens to be killed, but protecting the flow of enemy information that would likely save thousands of lives in the future. Churchill had to make this very challenging choice, and he opted to follow the second course of action.

It's called situation ethics.  For example, in a situation where only the mother OR the young child can be saved from drowning, who should be saved?  There are logical calculations to make on both sides of this life-or-death equation.  When confronted with impossible circumstances, the only feasible course of action is to ask for divine direction. May you and I always be connected to (and comforted by) the wisdom that comes from above.

BUILD!

BUILD!

It has been suggested that life boils down to a matter of building choices. Indeed, all of us were born with a divine mandate to build something, whether it be a good reputation, a career, a loving family, solid friendships, personal integrity, or a right relationship with God. But some of those things can evaporate in a flash because of financial losses, natural disasters, unwarranted deception, unforeseen difficulties, or even death.

Daniel Webster offered sage advice on our important life-building project.  He wrote, “If we work on marble, it will perish. If we work on brass, time will effect it. If we rear temples, they will crumble to dust. But if we work on men’s immortal minds, if we imbue them with high principles, with fear of God and love of their fellow-men, we engrave on those tablets something which time cannot efface, and which will brighten and brighten through all eternity.”

Point to Ponder: What are you building, and with what materials?  My friend, build wisely.

JUNETEENTH

JUNETEENTH

Today we honor the celebration of Juneteenth, which is now a national holiday in the USA.  Here’s a brief background of its history, courtesy of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.

On “Freedom’s Eve,” the eve of January 1, 1863, the first Watch Night services took place. On that night, enslaved and free African Americans gathered in churches and private homes all across America awaiting news that the Emancipation Proclamation had taken effect. At the stroke of midnight, prayers were answered as all enslaved people in Confederate States were declared legally free. Union soldiers, many of whom were black, marched onto plantations in the south reading copies of the Emancipation Proclamation and spreading the joyous news of freedom in Confederate States.

But not everyone in Confederate territory would immediately be free. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was made effective in 1863, it could not be implemented in places still under Confederate control. As a result, in the westernmost Confederate state of Texas, enslaved people would not be free until 2½ years later. Freedom finally came on June 19, 1865, when 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas. The army announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state were free by executive decree. This day came to be known as “Juneteenth” by the newly freed people in Texas.

Juneteenth marks our nation’s second independence day. Although it has long been celebrated in the African American community, this monumental event remains largely unknown to most Americans.  The historical legacy of Juneteenth shows the value of never giving up hope in uncertain times.

And so it is…

HOW YOU SAY IT IMPACTS RESULTS

HOW YOU SAY IT IMPACTS RESULTS

Some scratch their heads in wonder when a family member or friend seems to garner all the goodies and perks of life.  It just appears that they have favor with every person they meet, no matter who, no matter what.  But a closer and more objective observation would reveal that they actually know how to frame things, that is, how to express whatever they are feeling in more positive and productive ways.

Consider this.  A young psychology student serving in the Army decided to test this theory.  Drawing kitchen duty, he was given the job of passing out apricots at the end of the chow line.  He asked the first few soldiers that came by, “You don’t want any apricots, do you?”  Ninety percent said “No.”  Then he tried a more positive approach: “You do want apricots, don’t you?”  About half answered, “Uh, yeah.  I’ll take some.”  Then he tried a third test, based on assuming their consent, sort of a faith technique.  This time he asked, “One dish of apricots, or two?”  And in spite of the fact that soldiers don’t necessarily like Army apricots, 40 percent took two dishes and 50 percent took one!  Wow!

If you always seem to be striking out, consider changing how you approach others and the way you communicate your ideas.  Positive trumps negative, each and every time.

OUR GOD IS GREAT!

OUR GOD IS GREAT!

The universe God created is more immense than we could possibly imagine.  Within the observable universe, it is estimated that there are approximately 200 billion galaxies, each of which contains an average of 100 million stars.  Wow!   Indeed, God’s universe has almost innumerable stars.  If you were to hold out a dime at arm’s length, that small coin would block out 15 million stars from your view, if your eyes could only see with that degree of power.

To help us grasp the vastness of our own galaxy, The Milky Way Galaxy, one scientist suggests we imagine a smooth glass surface.  Shrink the sun from its 865,000 miles in diameter to two feet and place it on the surface.  Using this scale, Earth would be 220 paces out from the sun, and would be the size of a pea.  Mars, the size of a pinhead, would be 108 paces beyond Earth. But to reach Neptune, you'd need to step off another 6,130 paces from Mars.  By now you would be five miles away from the sun, but there still wouldn’t be room on the glass surface for Pluto!  And you would have to pace off 6,720 miles beyond Pluto to reach the nearest star.  Yet, this glass model represents only a tiny, tiny, tiny fraction of the known (and unknown) universe.

“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament[a] shows His handiwork.” (Psalm 19:1)

How great is our God!  Clearly, there is no situation that we confront in life that it too large or challenging for Him. (Ephesians 3:20)

EMBRACE JOY

EMBRACE JOY

The celebrated author, Leo Buscaglia, tells a story about his parents and what his family later called their “misery dinner.”  It happened on the night when his father came home and announced he would have to go into bankruptcy because his partner had absconded with all of their firm’s funds. Leo’s mother went out right away and sold some jewelry to buy food for a sumptuous family feast. Other members of the family criticized her for it.  But she told them this: “The time for joy is now, when we need it most, not next week.”  Her courageous act rallied her family’s outlook and future.

My friend, joy is transformational, contagious and powerful.

Some years ago, while I was praying and meditating on the Word of God, I received a life-changing revelation about the true meaning of joy.  I learned that joy isn’t happiness, which is conditional and temporary.  Here’s the revelation: Joy is the assurance that CHRIST is at the center of our circumstances.  Therefore, we need not fear, but simply obey the wise command of our Heavenly Father: “Be still…and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)  He always shows up on time.

WHAT IS ATTRACTIVENESS?

WHAT IS ATTRACTIVENESS?

Our culture seems to be totally obsessed with notions of beauty.  Television screens are inundated with so-called beauty products, designed and marketed with the allure of possibilities to be more outwardly appealing to ourselves and others.  But do exteriors truly reveal beauty, or is it what’s on the inside that actually counts?

The sage Solomon’s commentary is noteworthy.  In describing the ‘perfect’ woman, Solomon opined, “She opens her mouth with wisdom, and on her tongue is the law of kindness.” (Proverbs 31:26)  Although attractiveness is certainly a subjective matter, it seems that the practical wisdom of kindness is one mission critical component.

So, if one truly desires to become more attractive, it is important to realize that beauty is never found in a jar or bottle containing purchased products.  Rather, it is the direct result of one’s attitude and choices on how to engage others.  My friend, if you are sometimes tempted to be a ‘hammer,’ always looking for a ‘nail’ to forcefully drive home, simply try a little kindness. (smile)  I love how Alexander Maclaren frames it: “Kindness makes a person attractive.  If you would win the world, melt it, do not hammer it.”  Indeed, kindness is the irrefutable common denominator of genuine and enduring beauty.  Sample it; you’ll like it!

THE QUEST FOR CONSISTENCY

THE QUEST FOR CONSISTENCY

Apparently, Jesus Christ isn’t engaged in a search for superstars, but for sincere and dedicated disciples.  Allow me to share the story of one noteworthy-yet-ordinary athlete by the name of Don Sutton.  His career is described colorfully in Max Lucado’s book, “God Came Near.”

Here’s how Lucado portrays Don Sutton.  “He performed very few extraordinary feats.  Though he was a veteran of 21 seasons, in only one did he win more than 20 games.  He never pitched a no-hitter, and only once did he lead the league in any category at all.  Yet on June 21, 1986, Don Sutton rubbed elbows with the great legends of baseball by becoming the 13th pitcher ever to win 300 games.  His self-analysis of that success is quite revealing.  He called himself a grinder and a mechanic.  ‘I never considered myself flamboyant or exceptional,’ he said.  ‘But all my life I’ve found a way to get the job done.’  And Don Sutton did exactly that.  He got things done.  Through more than two decades, six presidential terms, and four team trades, he simply showed up and did what pitchers are supposed to do: win games.  With tunnel-vision devotion and consistent performance, he redefined greatness.”

Don Sutton’s claim to fame was something quite simple but extraordinary: Stick-to-it-tive-ness.  My friend, it may feel like your accomplishments are modest and minimal in comparison to others, but our God truly treasures faithfulness and consistency.  You may never receive the accolades of the crowd, but you will surely gain the most prominent of commendations if you will only remain steadfast.  For the Word admonishes us, “be steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord.”  In doing so, we will ultimately hear The Master’s confirming and compassionate voice, “Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, and I will make you ruler over many things.” (I Corinthians 15:58 – Matthew 25:21)  Just stick to it…that’s all folks!

OPPOSITION REVEALS

OPPOSITION REVEALS

In Tim Hansel’s book, “Holy Sweat,” he cites a revealing study published by Victor and Mildred Goertzel.  Their work took a very close look at the lives of 413 famous and exceptionally gifted people.  One common thread ran through the lives of these outstanding people.  All of them had to overcome some of life’s most challenging obstacles.

Robert Schuller famously remarked, “tough times don’t last; tough people do.”  My friend, your problems, pressures and pains are actual appointments with destiny.

BLUEPRINT FOR LIVING

BLUEPRINT FOR LIVING

Let’s not make life overly complicated.  The scriptural admonitions of Solomon and Joshua offer concise summaries of our real responsibilities and rewards.

Ecclesiastes 12:13

Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: FEAR GOD, AND KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS: for this is THE WHOLE DUTY OF MAN.

Joshua 1:8

THIS BOOK OF THE LAW shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may OBSERVE TO DO according to all that is written in it. For then YOU WILL MAKE YOUR WAY PROSPEROUS, and then YOU WILL HAVE GOOD SUCCESS.

Don’t overthink; just do it.  The Master Architect will skillfully assist you with a detailed blueprint that will support order and secure completion, even in your ‘messy’ construction zone.  Find it in THE BOOK. (Philippians 1:6)

SORT, SIFT, FOCUS!

SORT, SIFT, FOCUS!

A personal daily mantra I’ve adopted over the years is, “Sort, Sift, Focus!”  Sort through the tasks; sift out the excess; focus on the target assignment.  It’s the recognition that there are one-hundred-and-one things that I can do with my daily allotment of time, but far fewer things (perhaps only one thing) that I should do.  This perspective must be visualized through a Kingdom lens to grasp the Kingdom mentality.  It is my conviction that the Creator has deposited unique and productive gifts within each of us.  This is the divine signature of our Sovereign Craftsman.  To wit, Heaven’s intent was never for us to become ‘jacks-or-jills’ of all trades, but to identify and master our particular life purpose.  Whenever we slow and still ourselves, we are more apt to discern The Master Architect’s plan.

Henry Ford wrote, “A weakness of all human beings is trying to do too many things at once.  That scatters effort and destroys direction.  It makes for haste, and haste makes waste.  So we do things all the wrong ways possible before we come to the right one.  Then we think it is the best way because it works, and it was the only way left that we could see.  Every now and then I wake up in the morning headed toward that finality, with a dozen things I want to do.  And I know I can’t do them all at once.” When asked what he would do about that, Ford replied, “I go out and trot around the house.  While I’m running off the excess energy that wants to do too much, my mind clears and I see what can and should be done.”

Prayer, scripture and meditation are reliable components of the “Sort, Sift, Focus” process.  They enable us to follow our Creator’s wise mandate: “Be still…and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)  In truth, any barriers or errors we encounter are actually restraints or reminders of our pressing need to do so.  Sort, Sift, Focus!  Sort through the tasks; sift out the excess; focus on the target assignment.

YOU ARE INFLUENTIAL

YOU ARE INFLUENTIAL

Whether you are consciously aware of it or not, your life is absolutely influential.  Others are constantly observing, taking mental notes of whatever you say and do.  And some of them are taking cues from you in determining their own courses of action.  Live intentionally.  Live right.  You may never know the extent to which your life has impact on others.  The following poetic prayer from an unknown author is a worthwhile aim for all of us.

My life shall touch a dozen lives before this day is done;

Leave countless marks for good or ill, ere sets the evening sun.

This is the wish I always wish, the prayer I always pray:

Lord, may my life help other lives it touches on the way.

Amen.

GOD IS SOVEREIGN; YOU AIN'T!

GOD IS SOVERIGN; YOU AIN’T!

Despite our brilliance, ingenuity and phenomenal accomplishments, humankind owes its continual existence to a six-inch layer of topsoil and the fact that it occasionally rains.  Indeed.  And God is the indisputable designer of both of these benefits, not us.  I’m fully aware that today’s devotional topic contains grammatically flawed English, but it is absolutely accurate and essential theology.  Trust our Creator.

THE POWER OF PREJUDICE

THE POWER OF PREJUDICE

E. Griffin cites an intriguing study in his book, “The Mindchangers,” detailing how prejudice distorts our worldview.  According to Griffin, we're quite capable of reordering our perceptions of the world around us in order to maintain our conviction that we are right and others are wrong.  A group of white, middle-class New York City residents was presented with a picture of people on a subway.  Two men were in the foreground.  One was white and one was black.  One wore a business suit and one was clothed in workman’s overalls.  One was surrendering his money to the other person who was threatening him with a knife.

Actually, it was the black man who wore the suit, and he was being robbed by the white laborer.  But such a picture did not square with the prejudices of the viewers.  To them, white men were executives; black men were blue collar workers.  Blacks were the robbers, whites the victims.  And so they reported what their minds told them they were seeing--a black laborer assaulting a white businessman.  As human beings who desperately desire our lives to be consistent and untroubled, we will go to great lengths to reject something that implies we’re wrong.

Indeed, prejudice is unjust, cruel and unbecoming.  Let’s rise above cultural myths and discipline ourselves to see people as they really are.

NO ONE HAS TO NOTICE

NO ONE HAS TO NOTICE

We live in a society that, for so many, visibility is everything.  Self-promotion becomes the inevitable destination of those who harbor feelings of insecurity or inferiority.  I pause today to applaud the silent and unsung heroes that are all around us.  Their names are seldom called, and they tend at times to feel unnoticed or unappreciated.  But what they say and do does matter, both in time and eternity.

Thanks to the celebrated poet, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, most people have heard of the “midnight ride of Paul Revere.”  But few have heard of Israel Bissel, a humble post rider on the Boston-New York route, a bona fide yet unsung hero of the American Revolutionary War.

After the Battle of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775, Bissel was ordered to raise the alarm in New Haven, Connecticut (the city where my family now resides).  He reached Worchester, Massachusetts, which was normally a day’s ride, in just two hours.  There, according to tradition, his horse promptly dropped dead from the strenuous ride.  Pausing only to get another mount, Bissel pressed on and by April 22 he arrived in New Haven--but he didn’t stop there.  He rode on to New York, arriving April 24, and then stayed in the saddle until he reached Philadelphia on the following day. Bissel's 126-hour, 345-mile ride signaled American militia units throughout the Northeast to mobilize for war.

It is likely that you haven’t heard his name, but that does not diminish his honor or his contribution.  My friend, it is actually unnecessary for others to celebrate you.  Just look in the mirror and be contented with who you are and what you bring to the table of life.  No one has to see; God sees.  Incidentally, just in case you haven’t been told lately, thank you for your service!

WHERE DOES GREED LEAD?

WHERE DOES GREED LEAD?

In Christopher Winans’ book entitled Malcolm Forbes: The Man Who Had Everything, he tells of a tour that Forbes took through Egypt in 1984.  After viewing the staggering burial tomb of King Tut, Forbes seemed to be in a reflective mood.  Later, Forbes turned to one of his associates and asked with all sincerity: “Do you think I’ll be remembered after I die?”

Winans noted that Forbes is certainly remembered as the man who coined the phrase, “He who dies with the most toys wins.”  That was the wisdom of Malcolm Forbes.  In fact, that was his ambition.  That’s why he collected scores of motorcycles.  That’s why he would pay over a million dollars for a Faberge egg.  That’s why he owned castles, hot air balloons and countless other toys that have no lasting value at the end of one’s life.

Unchecked greed is the absolute pinnacle of shallow and superficial thinking.  The way Jesus Christ assesses it should resonate deeply with all of us: “For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?  Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?” (Matthew 16:26)

He who dies with the most toys isn’t the real winner; he who accepts Christ as Savior and Lord gains ultimate and eternal victory.

WE REMEMBER

WE REMEMBER

On this Memorial Day, we pause annually to remember and reflect on loved ones who have transitioned at various ages and stages of life.  Of course, we also soberly consider the ultimate sacrifice of those who exchanged their very lives for our freedom and democracy.  We remember.

As Christians, it also seems appropriate to recall the goodness, grace and mercy of Almighty God who has faithfully preserved us while wisely directing life’s footsteps.  Here is how F .E. Marsh describes what the Christian sees while looking back at the providence of our Creator:

The deliverances the Lord has wrought. (Deuteronomy 5:15)

The way He has led. (Deuteronomy 8:2)

The blessings He has bestowed. (Deuteronomy 32:7-12)

The victories He has won. (Deuteronomy ll:2-7)

The encouragements He has given. (Joshua 23:14)

In the face of present challenges, it is tempting to minimize or forget God's past faithfulness.  Our tendency might be to focus on the difficulties or dangers of our present paths.  Nevertheless, looking back allows us to re-experience the absolute joy of victories won, mountains climbed, setbacks endured, and challenges overcome.  Also it serves to position (top-of-mind) the reassuring fact that Jehovah-Shammah is “there” (right here, right now) to proactively supply all of our need and to safeguard our purpose and destiny.  Perhaps the Psalmist David expressed it best:  “God is our refuge and strength, a very PRESENT HELP in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1)

So, as the old praise chorus goes, “Jesus, I’ll never forget what You’ve done for me!”  We remember.
