ARE WE DESPERATE TO FIT IN?
Elwyn Brooks White made the following apropos observation about our collective drive toward conformity: “People have re-cut their clothes to follow the fashion. People have remodeled their ideas too -- taken in their convictions just a little at the waist, shortened the sleeves of their resolve, and fitted themselves out in new intellectual ensembles designed out of the latest page of history.”
Conversely, true Christian faith frees us from following the patterns and dictates of this world system. We must be true to Christ by steadfastly following (only) His Word. Referring to the tendency of some believers to be swayed by the prevailing influences of society and follow the dictates of the crowd, Chuck Colson wrote, “many churchmen sport theological bell-bottoms.” Wow! By Heaven’s reckoning, being out-of-style with the world is tantamount to the vogue garments of true faith.
In the spirit of our Savior, let’s dare to be different.
